This Week’s Awards- Spring 2 Week 1

Our Mathematician of the Week has come back to school with a bang this week! He has been so motivated, especially in Maths, but in all areas of his learning and we are all very proud of him. He was spotted all week doing different maths activities and is showing that he is much more confident to show us what he knows. Well done!

Our Writer of the Week used to be a bit reluctant to write and share her ideas. This week she wrote a whole story!!! She wrote the story of Frozen and using the story book was able to say what her story said and read it back. What a fantastic job! We can’t wait to see what she writes next.

Super Space

We had a great time last week when we decided we wanted to learn about Space. It followed on from all our discussions and learning and night and dark the week before. There were lots of different activities in our classroom. One of our favourites was the special space writing! We had special UV pens which only lit up when you used the torch. We worked together because it could be a bit tricky to write and press the switch. Can you remember what you wrote or drew?

When we talked about space lots of us mentioned rockets so we decided to build one! This one was so big we could fit inside it. We had to decorate it so that it looked like a rocket and then design the inside so it had buttons and other functions to make it ready to fly. We made sure it had a stop and start button and also one to go faster. There was even a music player added so we could listen on our way to space. Can you see our wonderful labels for the go and stop button and for the fast button? (This is a great way to get us writing for a purpose so we don’t even know we’re doing it!)

After we’d built a rocket for our role play area we got busy building another one in Maths. We had been talking about 3-D shapes all week so it seemed the perfect opportunity to find out what we’d learnt. There were lots of amazing ideas about what we would need for our rocket- the music player showed up again! We also talked about the shapes that we could see and practised using some of the special words that we had learnt such as face, edge and vertices. Can you remember what they mean?

We decided if we wanted to go to Space would have to know what to pack to take with us. Miss Parker got a collection of things together and we thought about what we’d need. Some of us tried to write a list by listening to the sounds we could could hear. This is how we learn to write in Reception. We don’t need to be able to write every letter that we need to spell it perfectly yet (That will come later!) Can you try and write a list of some of the things that you might need to take a special trip?

Finally, there were lots more space related activities in our classroom which we could explore to find out more. The small world area was very popular and we all loved using the rocket to tell stories about Space.

What have we been learning? 

  • to write and mark make using our special pens. 
  • to work together completing different activities. 
  • to think how to build a rocket and what it needs to work. 
  • to talk about 2D and 3D shapes and think which shapes are best for which purpose. 
  • to write a list by sounding out and writing the sounds we hear. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Try writing the shopping list by sounding out.  Can you write the initial (first) sound in each word? Can you hear and write any of the other sounds? 
  • Look around your house for 3d shapes (cubes, cuboids, spheres, pyramids) How do you know which one is which? Can you describe it? 
  • Find books about Space. What can you find out?

You Can’t Catch Me…

We had a visitor in Onyx class the other week. The Gingerbread Man left us some clues in our classroom. We had to go on Gingerbread Man hunt around the whole school. He left us some clues to work out. Can you remember where the clues told us to go? 

I didn’t want to be a snack, I bet you’ll never get me back. Now got to the place where there’s lot of books. 

Mr Sieczkarek told me to stop running away or I wouldn’t be able to go out and play. I walked away before we could meet and went to the place where we eat. 

You’ve not caught me yet but you will soon I bet. I’ll tell you for free I’ve gone where their three. 

We found out where lots of new places were in our school. Some of us had never been there before. We also got to meet lots of people who work in our school. Can you remember all the places we went? Can you remember all the people we meet along the way? 

When we got back to the classroom we found some gingerbread men. Everyone enjoyed their special treat. It started us talking about the Gingerbread Man and what we knew about him.

We decided that’s what we want to learn about the week after. We retold the story, we acted out the story, we counted gingerbread men, we made some of our own in the creative workshop and then we baked some of our own as well. It was a busy week!

We had an interesting question to find out in Maths as well- Which part of the Gingerbread Man do you eat first? Although Miss Parker didn’t tell us this at first, she just told us that we were only allowed to take one bite. It was hard not to gobble him all up! When we took our bite we looked to see who had eaten which part first. Most of us had eaten the head first!

And we still never caught the Gingerbread Man. We only got to eat the little ones he left for us. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for him at home!

What have we been learning? 

  • To learn where the different spaces are in our school, insides and out. 
  • To learn some of the other people who are in our school and where our big brothers and sisters classrooms are. 
  • The story of the Gingerbread Man. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • See if your child can tell you about the photographs above- Who can you see? Where did we go? 
  • Try and make some Gingerbread Men at home. You can find a recipe here.
  • Find out which part of the Gingerbread Man people eat first at your house. Which is the most popular?

FS2 Graduation 2016

We had a wonderful time at our Graduation back in July. We showed this video to show everything we’d done during our year in Onyx Class.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Storytelling

During the last week of half term we had our Storytelling event for parents and carers. We’d been practising the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar as part of our learning about caterpillars and butterflies so decided this is the story we wanted to tell our grown ups. We went to the Hall first with Diamond class (Nursery) and Garnet class (FS2) and used the Story Map and Makaton actions to help us tell the story. Our grown ups who came were very proud of us and gave us a big clap at the end.

Then we headed back to the classroom. Our focus this year has been on Maths so we took the opportunity to do some Maths with our parents and carers based on the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We practised knowing and ordering the days of the week. We could then use this to help us retell the story. Some of us didn’t have grown ups there to help us so we had to be independent and complete it on our own. Some of us even took it a step further and used the pictures to help us write the story ourselves on the back.

This is sheet we had to complete and then take home so we could keep on practising the story.

We also got to take home the story map and the words so we could keep practising. We asked our grown ups what they thought so we can make it even better next time.

What have we been learning? 

  • To confidently tell a story to an audience of adults. 
  • To say the days of the week. 
  • To use the days of the week to help us order the story. 
  • To be independent and cut out and organise an activity ourselves. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Retell the story together using your story map and story words. 
  • Practise using a big voice and tell some different family members the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. You could even use Skype or FaceTime to tell people you don’t see all the time. We’d love to hear who you’ve been telling the story to, don’t forget to tell us on a Wow moment. 
  • Can you change the story to the story of The Very Hungry Tadpole? What might he eat each day?

Beautiful Butterflies

We’ve had some visitors in our classroom for the last few weeks. It has been wonderful watching our tiny caterpillars turn into beautiful butterflies right before our eyes.

Look how tiny the caterpillars were when they first arrived.

They ate and ate and ate and grew and grew and grew! Quickly the doubled and trebled in size. Can you see all five caterpillars in there?

Soon they were ready to spin their cocoons and start becoming butterflies. We knew they were ready because they hung upside down.

While our caterpillars were growing and getting ready to become butterflies we decided we wanted to learn about caterpillars and butterflies. We talked about how they’d got bigger and what would happen to them next. We also thought about if we knew any stories about caterpillars. Everybody remembered seeing The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle before.

We decided we’d like to try all the fruit just like the Hungry Caterpillar had done. Miss Parker set us a challenge though…. we had to think of as many words as we could to describe the taste of the fruit instead of always saying nice or yummy. Miss Parker wanted to know why it was nice and yummy. We also found out our favourite class fruit. Can you remember which fruit was the most popular?

We tried to retell the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar in words and in writing. The children decided they’d like to tell their families the story at our next storytelling workshop. Look out for the date coming soon. We are starting to write more and more and Miss Parker tried to trick us by making mistakes when she was writing. We were just too clever though and managed to fix them all.

We had such a busy time learning about caterpillars and butterflies. Look what our families had to say when they looked in our floor book.

We’d loved having our caterpillars then butterflies in the classroom and really enjoyed watching them as they moved and began to fly more and more.

Finally it was time to say goodbye to our butterflies and let them go and fly out in the real world. Although they loved our classroom it was time to let them see the rest of the world. I wonder where they are now? Keep looking to see if they come and visit you in your garden.

What have we been learning?

  • About the life cycle of Caterpillars and Butterflies. 
  • To retell a known story using story language. 
  • To think of as many words to describe taste as possible. 
  • To try new foods we might not have had before.
  • To look for patterns in stories and the environment around us. 
  • To look after animals who need us to be careful and considerate. 
  • To write our ideas in sentences. 

 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Look for butterflies in your garden. What do they look like? Can you find out which species of butterfly they are? 
  • Can you explain the life cycle to a grown up? For an extra challenge can you draw or write about the Butterfly Life Cycle. 
  • Can you remember the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and tell it to a grown up? Remember to use the special story language we used in school.
