This Weeks’ Awards- Summer 2 Week 4

Wow! I can’t believe that it is Week 4 of the half term already. No wonder the children are showing us such amazing learning in all areas of the classroom.

Our Mathematician of the Week got her award this week not just for the great counting she did with the 1p and 2p coins but for her great attitude to learning. She said:

“I was doing this and I found it a little bit hard but when I had a try I didn’t find it hard anymore.”

She really grew in confidence using the Numicon to help her count the coins and work out which ones she needed to make the given total. Well done and don’t forget to help mummy and daddy counting the coins next time you’re at the shops!

Our Writer of the Week this week amazed us all with her writing. Miss Parker knew she could do it but she doesn’t often choose to write so it was a lovely surprise to see she could do it so well. She formed the sentences she wanted to write herself and then was able to write each word listening for the sounds and writing the tricky words she knew. She then had to think really hard to read her writing back to the whole class. Great job!!!

This Week’s Awards- Summer 2 Week 1

Our Writer of the Week this week has made so much progress. His Nursery teachers would be so impressed at how good his writing has become. He is now writing a full sentence on his own using the resources around him independently. What a fabulous job he has done- he’s definitely ready for Year One!

Our Mathematician of the Week has been working particular hard to record her ideas. She was able to sort the buttons into different colours and find a way to record it on paper. She wrote all the colours and how many of each she had. After she’d done this she was able to work out which one she had most of. Great job! Yet another example of how Onyx class are getting ready for Year One! 🙂

Chocolatey Easter Baking

For Global Citizenship Week we refreshed our learning about Fairtrade from earlier in the year. We learnt about how chocolate gets to us from the plants in Africa. Did you know chocolate comes from a plant? 

We decided that we wanted to make something with our chocolate and because it was also nearly Easter decided to make Chocolate Easter Buns. We had to safely melt the chocolate watching carefully to observe what happens. There was lots of talk about what we could see and also smell! It smelt yummy.

We helped to make the buns following the recipe and weighing out the ingredients. We also had to count out the eggs for the top to make sure there was an equal number on each on.

What have we been learning? 

  • where our food comes from in the world. 
  • which food is Fairtrade and what this means. 
  • where our favourite chocolate comes from and how it gets to us in Sheffield. 
  • what different chocolate tastes like and how we can use different and interesting words to talk about it. 
  • about what happens to chocolate when it gets hot and melts. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • look at different foods at home and in the supermarket to see where it comes from. 
  • talk about the taste of foods using as many different words as possible. Examples are:  sweet, sour, salty, spicy, chewy, soft, crunchy, fizzy, fruity, gooey, mushy, icy, cold, hot. 
  •  look for other foods which melt when they get hot and talk about what happens when it cools down again.

NSPCC Big Board Game Day

We invited our parents and carers to school on Friday for Big Board Game Day in aid of the NSPCC. You can find out more about the great work that they do for children here.

We love playing board games because they are such a fun way to help us get better at Maths and counting. All the counting on a board game going backwards and forwards and counting the dice makes us much better at understanding number order, number lines and the concepts of more and less. The extra bonus is we’re having so much fun we don’t even know we’re doing Maths.

We all made our very own board game which we got to take home at the end of the day. Everyone had to order the numbers 1-20 themselves and then decide which messages to put on their game. Every single game in the class is different. Then we had the tricky job of cutting out the dice and folding it to make a cube.

Some children made a different board game with Mrs Brown at Parent Workshop on Thursday. One child brought his to school and very kindly let his friends keep it in the Maths Area. The children had a great time playing the game following the rules themselves and reading the cards which told them what to do.

As well as being great for making us great Mathematicians, board games are really good for helping us take turns and think of others as there are winners and losers.

We loved having our parents and carers come to help us in school and are really looking forward to playing our games again and again. Thanks for coming and for the donations that you made for the NSPCC.

Let us know about any other board games you have and play at home. I heard one child talk about playing Monopoly already!

Day 100!!!!!

We have been counting to Day 100 since we first started full time school way back in September. Can you remember our first days at school? Have a look at the blog post from when we started school. Click here to see it. We’ve all done a lot of growing since then and have got a lot cleverer!

We have been putting a straw in our pockets every day since then and marking it off on the hundred square. You can see when we first started on one of our first ever Mathematician of the Week blog post. Click here to see it.

Everyone was very excited that the day had finally come. We’d been planning our promised party for a couple of weeks now!

We did have to do some counting though. We found the easiest ways to count to 100 was to count to ten ten times. Can you see the different ways we have counted in this way?

Some children even measured the KS2 corridor using their steps. They had to predict if they thought there would be 100 steps from the Studio all the way to Miss French’s Office at the other end.

When we found out the steps gave us different measurements we learnt about a metre stick which turned out to have 100 centimetres on it. We’d found another 100! Children had to find objects which were longer or shorter than a metre and record them in their book.

We’d been busy during the week getting ready. Jayden thought we need decorations so got busy making some in the Workshop. We also made some special Day 100 Crowns which meant we had to do lots of counting.

 

When it got to Wednesday it was time for our party 🙂

Miss Bibby came through from Nursery with a surprise for us. The Nursery kids had been making pizza for their Pizza Day and sent some through for us to have at our party. You can see more about their Pizza Day here.  Thanks Nursery, we thought your pizza was yummy!

We’d thought about the other things we wanted for our party and decided that it couldn’t be a proper party without a chocolate cake and musical statues!

There was one last job to do… we needed to say well done to the rest of the school for their 100 days in school this year. We went to visit every classroom and took them a certificate. They were the same certificates that we got one of each to say well done to us!

What fabulous Day 100! Now we’re interested to know if we will get Day 100.

Don’t forget your Day 100 Homework to bring a collection of 100 items from home. We’ll be putting them on the wall in the classroom for everyone to see. 

What have we been learning? 

  • To count to ten confidently and count out that many objects. 
  • To count in tens to 100 and know what this looks like. 
  • To complete challenges and answer questions. 
  • To measure in different ways and think about which is best. 
  • To think about ourselves as old people and talk about what we might be able to do. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Try some of the activities at home like counting pennies in towers or throwing the dice. 
  • Count out objects in your home, for example, how many stairs are there on the way to bed? 
  • Count the days until you do something important, like go on holiday, a special visit or until your child’s birthday.

This Week’s Awards- Spring 2 Week 1

Our Mathematician of the Week has come back to school with a bang this week! He has been so motivated, especially in Maths, but in all areas of his learning and we are all very proud of him. He was spotted all week doing different maths activities and is showing that he is much more confident to show us what he knows. Well done!

Our Writer of the Week used to be a bit reluctant to write and share her ideas. This week she wrote a whole story!!! She wrote the story of Frozen and using the story book was able to say what her story said and read it back. What a fantastic job! We can’t wait to see what she writes next.

This Week’s Awards- Spring 1 Week 6

We are particularly proud of our Writer of the Week this week. He has been determined to win the award and consequently has been trying really hard with his writing all week. He has done independent writing nearly every day! He has been challenged to write about different things and to start including more finger spaces. Great job!

Our Mathematician of the Week also did a fabulous job this week. She initiated her own activity in the classroom counting the correct number of pegs.  She was then able to extend it when challenged to order the numbers she had. She spotted some were missing so knew to add them in. Our Mathematician  was also spotted helping her friends with their Maths earlier in the week. Fabulous!!!
