Y1 Investigators- Download the Y1 Transition Book

After we’d been busy making our special transition book for the Nursery Kids (see post here) we decided that we wanted to find out more about Y1 and make a book for ourselves. We’d already been on one visit so had some ideas but there were other things we weren’t sure about, like assembly and dinner bands.

We thought of what we wanted to know and then sent some investigators to Y1 to find out. It was also another chance to have a sneaky look at our new classrooms and see our new teachers.

If you want to see the book we made you can find it by clicking on this sentence!

We are really going to miss the children in Onyx Class next year as they move up to Year one but we know they are going to be superstars! Make sure you pop back and let us know how you’re getting on everyone 🙂

Super Sports Day

Friday was our Sports Day. We had a fabulous time along with Key Stage One down on the MUGA completing a range of different activities. First we found out which team we were in and which grown up we were with. It was good because we got mixed up with lots of kids from all the other classes. Then it was down to the MUGA to start the different activities. We had ten to do in total with a couple of rest stations.

Sports Day was even more exciting this year as our parents/ carers got to come and watch us. There were 75 parents/ carers in total which is fantastic to see. Thanks to all that came. A big thank you also the the Y6 kids who came to help us and Miss Varley who organised everything.

Once we’d done all the activities we went back to the Main Hall to find out who won. All the points every team scored were added up and the winning teams were announced. There were special certificates for the kids in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Everyone else got a certificate to say well done.

What have we been learning?

  • to take part in a team with children from a range of classes.
  • to participate in a range of sporting activities.
  • about the effects of exercise on our bodies.
  • to support others engaged in sporting activities.

How can you continue the learning at home?

  • have a mini-sports day at the park with your friends.
  • talk about the effects of exercise on your body, for example, when walking home or walking up stairs.
  • talk about how to cool down when you get hot during sports activities, such as taking off jumpers when hot and drinking cool water.

Welcome to Foundation Stage- Reception (FS2)- Download our Book

The children have been working hard to produce a book for our nursery children and all the children coming to join our school from other nurseries. We have been talking about how we felt when we were in our nurseries and it was time for us to start full time school.

We decided that we would write our own book which we could send to the nursery kids which would help them know what to expect. First we had to decide what was important to tell them about. We also went to nursery and asked the children what they wanted to know. Then we had to take the photos, which we mostly took ourselves on the iPad. We even asked our parents/ carers what they thought the new FS2 parents/ carers would like to know. Once we had done that Miss Parker helped us to use an App called Book Creator to turn it into a book on the iPad.

When it was complete we went to Nursery to share it with the kids there. We even shared it with some kids who came to our classroom for an extra visit.

Some of the comments from our parents/ carers were handed in after we’d made our book but they were so good we wanted to share them with you anyway…

“I would say it is normal to feel nervous and worried. Its such a big step and the start of a very long journey but you will soon be so full of pride and they learn something new literally everyday. Its gone so fast (the year) and they are in great hands”

“Children moving up from Nursery is one of the most scariest things ever. Me as a parent who does worry about everything, one thing I can say is trust what the teachers say and they will be fine. My child has changed so much for the better! I just need to say stay happy and excited even though deep down it scary. Good luck!”

You can find the rest in our book by clicking on this link and downloading the whole book.

A huge well done to Onyx Class 2016-7 for writing the book and thinking about what was important for their nursery friends to know.

We recommend that you look at the book together, either on a computer or tablet or you can print a copy and keep it at home. The more familiar your child is with the pictures and names of everything the more secure they will feel when they start school in September.

Miss Hulme will continue to share the book with the children in Prince Edward Nursery and we will be making this link known to all the other nurseries we are expecting children to come to us from.

We look forward to meeting you and your child as they start with us in Foundation Stage Two (Reception) if we haven’t already seen you on a visit.

Visit 1- Thursday 6th July

Parents Meeting- Monday 10th July

Visit 2- Wednesday 12th July

You will have received more details in a letter at your home. Please phone school on (0114) 2281900 if you haven’t received a letter and we will let you know the details of the visits and full transition.

Our First Visit to Year One

It was very exciting last week as we went to visit Year One for the first time. We found out who our new teachers are going to be.

Y1 Topaz Class is Miss Breeze and Miss Bibby.

Y1 Jet Class is Miss Hart, Mrs Clay and Mrs Reed.

Miss Hart is coming to join Prince Edward from a different school but we were very lucky because she was able to come and meet us and will be here for our next Y1 visits too.

Miss Hukin and Miss Beckett will also be in Year One some of the time too .

We had a fabulous time in our new classes finding out what there is to do in Year One and meeting everybody. We found out lots of things are going to be just the same and only somethings will be different. We are going to be all mixed up with the children from Garnet class to make our new Y1 classes.

We will get lots of other opportunities to learn about our new classes and teachers. We are going to another visit on Wednesday 5th July in the afternoon. On this day we will need collecting from our new classrooms. Then on Wednesday 12th July we’re going in the morning so will need dropping off in Year One in the morning. This will give our families chance to see where our new classrooms are as well as us getting to go again.

The Onyx Class teachers are very sad to see us go but they know that we are going to be Y1 superstars! 🙂

This Week’s Awards- Summer 2 Week 1

Our Writer of the Week this week has made so much progress. His Nursery teachers would be so impressed at how good his writing has become. He is now writing a full sentence on his own using the resources around him independently. What a fabulous job he has done- he’s definitely ready for Year One!

Our Mathematician of the Week has been working particular hard to record her ideas. She was able to sort the buttons into different colours and find a way to record it on paper. She wrote all the colours and how many of each she had. After she’d done this she was able to work out which one she had most of. Great job! Yet another example of how Onyx class are getting ready for Year One! 🙂

Being Y1 children!

As we get ready for being Y1s we’ve been to our new classes a few times to have a practice. It’s been great to meet our new teachers properly, to explore our new classrooms and to see which other children will be in our new class.

There are two Y1 classes – Jet class with Miss Mason and Mrs Raynes and Topaz class with Mrs Ainsley (Mon/Tues), Mrs Wells (Wed-Fri) and Mrs Pym. We’ll also see Miss Morris in Jet class and Miss Deighton and Mrs Reed in Topaz class.

Look at some of the fun things we did when we went to practice being Y1s.

We we took our new teachers special presents when we went to visit so they’ll be up in our classrooms when we start in Y1 for real. We had to do good teamwork to each contribute to the finished artwork.

We had a great time in Y1 and are excited for September when we get to go to our new classrooms everyday.

Parents/carers- if you’ve any questions about your child starting in Y1 please ask either the teachers in Onyx class or you could walk round to see the Y1 teachers at home time by their classrooms.
