Our Trip to Build a Bear Workshop

We had a wonderful visit to Build A Bear Workshop on January 31st. We did lots of talking about our visit and reflected on what we had seen and learnt when we got back. This has been turned into a Learning Story which you can see both in the classroom and below. We’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

After the February half term Charlie will start to come and visit the children at home. Please make sure you look after Charlie and bring him back to school. We’d love for you to complete the special diary so we can share your child’s experiences with the whole class. We encourage the children to write in the diary themselves rather than have you do it for them. Look out for Charlie coming to a house near you soon!

A huge thank you to the Parents/Carers who came with us on our visit. Without you we wouldn’t be able to take the children on these important visits.

How you can continue the learning at home? 

  • Go on visits to other places in Sheffield.  Talk about how they are the same as Manor Top and Meadowhall and how they are different.  
  • Go on visits on public transport, such as the bus or tram, and allow your child to help paying for tickets. It will help them understand money and how the different coins work. 
  • Allow your child to take small risks (with your close supervision) such as going on escalators. It will help them develop their self confidence and ability to manage their own safety.

Balance Bikes

We were very lucky this week when Rob from British Cycling came back to visit us in school. He came in before the half term break to see us and teach us some skills on the balance bikes. The balance bikes are really important for helping us to develop lots of physical skills.

These are the pictures from Rob’s first visit.

We start each session by practising some skills, often holding onto the paper ‘handlebars’. Then we get to try out our new skills on the bike.

Rob said he was really impressed by the progress we are making and he could tell that we’d been practising in between our sessions. We go on the Muga every week to practise our skills.

Rob was so impressed he gave everyone a certificate to say well done 🙂

Super Sports Day

Friday was our Sports Day. We had a fabulous time along with Key Stage One down on the MUGA completing a range of different activities. First we found out which team we were in and which grown up we were with. It was good because we got mixed up with lots of kids from all the other classes. Then it was down to the MUGA to start the different activities. We had ten to do in total with a couple of rest stations.

Sports Day was even more exciting this year as our parents/ carers got to come and watch us. There were 75 parents/ carers in total which is fantastic to see. Thanks to all that came. A big thank you also the the Y6 kids who came to help us and Miss Varley who organised everything.

Once we’d done all the activities we went back to the Main Hall to find out who won. All the points every team scored were added up and the winning teams were announced. There were special certificates for the kids in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Everyone else got a certificate to say well done.

What have we been learning?

  • to take part in a team with children from a range of classes.
  • to participate in a range of sporting activities.
  • about the effects of exercise on our bodies.
  • to support others engaged in sporting activities.

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • have a mini-sports day at the park with your friends. 
  • talk about the effects of exercise on your body, for example, when walking home or walking up stairs. 
  • talk about how to cool down when you get hot during sports activities, such as taking off jumpers when hot and drinking cool water.

Onyx Class Dancers

We’ve had a few children talking about the dancing they do out of school recently. They’ve been really brave and have been doing demonstrations for the rest of the class.

We decided to watch a video of some people dancing. Miss Parker showed us some Ballet danced by professional ballet dancers. We were memorised and watched it without a sound or any movement. Some of us said we didn’t think grown ups could get their legs that high and some of us were surprised to see boys as well as girls dancing. We watched another clip later in the day and compared to two.

We asked Miss Oades to help us the next time she was in class as she used to do lots of dance when she was younger. We made our PE session a dance session and used lots of different types of music to see how we danced differently to different music.

Can you guess what sort of music we were listening to from looking at our moves? 

We found it really interesting finding out about different types of dance. Well done to the girls who shared their home experiences of dance which led to everyone finding out more about different types of dance.

More Gymnastics Fun

We were very lucky on Wednesday because Rachel came to do an extra Gymnastics session with us in the Hall. We had such a good time when we did gymnastics with her before everyone was very excited.

We had to remember everything we learnt before and see if we could still do it as well. It was a fantastic opportunity to refresh our memories.

We love gymnastics with Rachel and really hope we get to see her again sometime soon.

Patterns Everywhere!

When we were reading the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar it got us talking about patterns, such as the pattern of the fruit in the story. Can you remember what the pattern was on Monday through to Friday?

We thought about other patterns and tried making lots of our own. As well as making lots of patterns in the classroom with various objects and media (See Mathematician of the Week post for one example), we tried making patterns with our bodies outside on the park.

This one was explained as, “up, down, up, down…..”

This one was, “jump, jump, swing, jump, jump, swing…..”

The children used the grassy area as well. This pattern was described as, “roll, STOP, roll, STOP…..”

And this one was, “jump, roll, jump, roll…..” all the way to the bottom of the bank.

We all loved making our patterns and learning that it had to keep on going to be called a repeating pattern. It didn’t feel like we were doing Maths at all!

What have we been learning? 

  • to recognise patterns in stories and the environment around us. 
  • to make our own repeating patterns. 
  • to know that repeating patterns have to keep on going and be repeated. Some children were able to make up a simple sequence but then forgot to repeat it. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Look for patterns in your home and when you go out. 
  • Have a go at making a repeating pattern with objects you find in your house. You could use knives and forks, different coins, or use colours to draw a pattern. 
  • Challenge your child to make a pattern with more than just two objects, e.g. red, blue green, red, blue, green ……
