Our Fabulous Volcano

We had a great time learning about volcanoes recently. It actually came about due to a misconception that one of the children had when they confused the cave in We’re Going On a Bear Hunt for a volcano.

It started is thinking what is a volcano and could we make our own. First we watched a video about volcanoes to find out more.

Then we started to think if we could make our own volcano which would erupt.

It took a full week to make as we had to do the paper mache and wait for it to dry before we could paint it. We had to look at lots of books and remember the video to find out what they looked like. We went to our school library to find some volcano books.

 

Finally our volcano was ready to see if it would erupt. We were all very excited to see what would happen.

Our volcano did erupt but it also spent some time when it didn’t so we talked about when volcanoes are dormant or extinct.

We also shared our learning with some of the children in Garnet class and showed them our videos.

Settling In

The Summer is over and we’ve all now started in Onyx class and have been doing a fantastic job of settling in. Miss Parker, Miss Morris and all the other teachers have been so proud of us and how grown up we’ve been. We’ve been having loads of fun exploring our new classroom and the outdoor area. For some of us there haven’t been that many differences from Nursery at Prince Edward but some of us have had to get used to everything being different.

We’ve also been learning to use the self serve snack area where we can choose between water and milk each day and have a piece of fruit. We have to remember to wash our hands and put all our rubbish in the bins ourselves.

 

We also had chance to explore the new outdoor ‘park’ on one of our first days. We’ve been talking about how to make sure we stay safe when we are playing on it and what to do when we can’t reach the next bit. There were lots of determined faces as they children really challenged themselves to be successful. We also talked about how the equipment is only for use in school time when school adults are supervising. Please remember not to allow your child to play on the equipment at the beginning and end of the school day. 

At the end of last week we went to the Dinner Hall for our dinners. It was very exciting to be like the big kids and eat our dinner in the Hall. Jayden even said, “School dinners are the best” and Mateo said he was going to have a dinner at school everyday! All the teachers, including Mr Sieczkarek and Mrs Ainsley, were impressed at how well the children coped with all the new routines. We loved seeing some of our older brothers, sisters and friends in the hall and we’re all super excited to go and play outside after our dinner with them next week.

 

Well done Onyx Class on a fabulous start to the school year! You’re the best! 🙂

Making Our Own Paper

Do you remember when we told you about the paper we’d made? We made it during Environment Week after reading a Charlie and Lola book called Look After Your Planet. Some of the children decided they wanted to try and make paper themselves by recycling old paper. You can read more about Environment Week by clicking here.

We had such a good time finding out how to make our own paper and it generated lots of language and conversation.

What have we been learning? 

  • To follow instructions. 
  • To talk about what we see and feel happening. 
  • To observe the changes to materials. 
  • To recycle paper. 

How can you continue the learning at home?

  • Look for the materials you can recycle in your home and sort them into the correct recycling bins. 
  • Find lots of different papers and talk about the different types. Which types of paper are good for what? For example, would you use writing paper instead of toilet paper? Why not? 
  • Have a look at these instructions and try to make your own paper at home. As you’ll see in the Learning Story, we didn’t have a window screen to squeeze the water out, we used a piece of thin fabric instead.

Fabulous Frogs!

We’ve been very lucky this year in Onyx class as we had some frogspawn arrive in our classroom way back in April.

It was very exciting after Miss Parker spotted some frogspawn in her pond and asked if we’d like to have some in school. Everyone said yes of course! Everyone already had a good idea about what would happen to it.

We watched our frogspawn as the tadpole began to hatch and thought what we might like to learn more about.

As we continued to watch the tadpoles grow we got an email from Miss Hulme and Diamond class in Nursery. They wanted to know if we could teach them more about our frogspawn and tadpoles. We decided that we would make them a book but as we find out lots of information on the computer that we’d make an ebook on the iPad for them. We had to find out some more information first so we knew we were teaching them the right things.

Everyone was very excited about the tadpoles and waited to see if they were frogs yet. Some of our parents and carers even stopped off each morning to see what was happening.

Finally after waiting a really long time our tadpole started to get legs at the front then the back. Eventually they turned into frogs! Can you see they still have a little bit of their tails left? 

We shared our learning with our parents and carers in our floor book and some parents commented on how they’d been continuing the learning at home. We love to hear when this has been happening.

Unfortunately we couldn’t keep the frogs at school forever. Miss Parker had to take them back to the pond where they came from so they could continue to grow. Maybe next year they’ll be the ones to lay the frogspawn and we’ll have some more at school.

 

What have we been learning? 

  • To watch animals and see how they move and change over time. 
  • To learn information from different sources and transfer this to telling others.
  • To care for living creatures and make sure they are fed and the water is clean.
  • To talk about our observations of living creatures.
  • To describe the life cycle of a tadpole/ frog.
  • To be patient!!!

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • It will be too late for this year now but next Spring do the same as Corey’s mum and look for Frogspawn in the local ponds. 
  • Talk about life cycles- How is the frog lifecycle the same as the butterfly? How is is different? 
  • Can you find any books at the Library (school or Manor Top) which have information in about life cycles? What else can you find out about?

How to Melt Ice and more…

A wonderful thing happened last week….. it got really really cold and the children found ice outside. Some of them brought it inside and began talking about it. Here is their Learning Story…….

The ideas didn’t stop there though. We began thinking about where the ice came from and how we could possibly get some more.

Sadly the water we put outside never froze because it didn’t get cold enough again. We got very excited when it snowed though!

We did start talking about frozen food in our freezers at home. Then we had a fabulous idea!

We looked for a recipe and got busy making ice cream.

The children had lots to say while they were making and tasting the ice cream they’d made.

“Are we making chips or ice cream? Oooh, its right freezing.” Harvey S

“We need a dish to mix it, you have to mix it?” Dalton 

“We’re making ice cream and we’re going to taste it.” Pheobe

“Because we have to mix it up” Narla

“It looks like a cup o’tea” Grace

“Double bag, that means two. We wanted to try frozen food.” Corey

Everyone loved making and trying our ice cream. Maybe you could try and make some at home. Its easier than you think and you don’t need a fancy ice cream machine- just some plastic bags, ice and salt! Look below for the recipe. 

 

What have we been learning?

  • About how ice melts and how it is formed. 
  • Different words to describe the ice other than just cold. 
  • About looking for changes in the things that we observe and how to describe them. 
  • To use the ice we were so interested in to make ice cream. 

How can you continue the learning at home?

  • Try to make ice cream at home. There is a recipe if you click here. We bought a bag of ice from the shop to save us spending a long time freezing ice cubes. 
  • Talk about the different weathers when you wake in up a morning. How many words can you think of to describe them other than cold and hot? 
  • Look for other types of frozen food in your freezer. What can you find? Can you eat it straight from the freezer? Why not?

Birds, Birds, Birds!

We started talking about birds the other week when we were talking about camouflage (another child initiated idea). The children got very excited about looking for birds and loved being outside with the checklists looking to see what was about.

Some of the children even built themselves a small hide so they would be camouflaged from the birds and they might see more.

We talked about what the children could see…..

We started to think how we might encourage more birds into our Outdoor Area.

“Seeds, but I got a good plan to get the birds to come. Get a tray, fill it with seeds then get a hide out. Then get camouflaged”- Corey

We talked about if anyone had heard of special bird cake…

How do we make bird cake? 

We found some instructions in a recipe and got busy making the bird cake.

We’ve hung the bird cake up on our trees and now we just have to wait and see if it works. Do you think it will work? 

What have we been learning? 

  • About the world around us and the animals which live in it. 
  • To talk about the different animals (birds) we see and describe them. 
  • To follow a recipe measuring out the ingredients in the correct order. 
  • To feel different textures when making the bird cake and talk about how they feel. 
  • To observe the natural environment and comment on what we see. 
  • To think about the feelings of others (the birds) and what they like. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Look for birds you see when you’re at home and out and about. 
  • Talk about the birds you see at home and out and about. 
  • Talk about the different foods that animals eat and compare them to our foods- would you like to eat the bird cake?
