Safety Week 2017

We had a very busy Safety Week this year. As you know already we had a visit from Don and his ambulance on Monday. He helped us think about how to keep ourselves safe and how the ambulance and paramedics can help if we do have an accident. On Wednesday when we went to the Hall things looked a bit different. It didn’t look safe at all. What do you think would have happened if we’d have done PE without checking? It helped us think that we must always decide if something looks safe before we use it.

We did a lot of thinking all week about online safety and keeping safe when we use the computers. Tuesday was Safer Internet Day in school. We read the book Penguin Pig by Stuart Spendlow which helped us think about if we should believe everything we see on the computer. You can access the Penguin Pig website here and even find out how to get your own copy for home.

We also read Webster’s Bedtime by Hannah Waley. Webster finds it really hard to turn all his devices off at bedtime which stops him getting to sleep.

We’ve been seeing Hector on our computer all year but we watched a video with him in and talked about how he can help keep us safe too. You can watch the Hector’s World videos here.

We started to look at the different blogs of our friends in the different classes in school. The other classes also started sending us messages on this blog and telling us what they thought. When we’re writing comments on others blogs and also writing our own posts we have to remember the Blog Rules to make sure everyone stays safe and happy. You can see our Blog Rules here. On Friday we had some special visitors from Y3 and Y4 come and see us. They had been making videos to help FS2 learn about staying safe online with Miss Croxall. It was great to have them come and visit and also to learn more about staying safe from them.

Parents/ carers- if you want to know more about what your child said and what their friends said about being safe online look in our Floor Book in class. The children made some interesting comments.

What have we been learning? 

  • how to stay safe online. 
  • that you can’t believe everything you see on a computer. 
  • to be as kind on computers as we are in real life.

Writing About the Ambulance

We decided that we wanted to write a sentence ourselves to put on the blog.

We had to think carefully about our sentence and wrote it out on paper first to make sure we’d sounded out all the sounds we needed and the letters were all there. We used the tricky word book mark too.

Then we used the keyboard to type the letters we needed. It was a little bit confusing because all the letters on the keyboard were in capitals. We used a special alphabet strip to make sure we knew the capital letters and the lower case letters which matched up. We also had to learn where the finger space bar was at the bottom.

This is the sentence that we wrote:

the  bandjs  ar    in      the amblans.

(The bandages are in the ambulance.)

While we were writing our sentence for the blog we talked about the importance of being kind when writing on blogs and being aware that others were going to read it. A Visit from the Ambulance

We had a special visitor on the Monday of Safety Week. Don from the Ambulance service came to see everyone in FS and KS1. First of all he talked to us in the Hall. We found out about his job and how he keeps people safe. Then we got to see his special uniform and some children got to try it on.

After that we went outside to see the ambulance. Some of us were a bit worried about going in the ambulance because we’d never been in one before but everyone had a turn. We thought of some questions to ask Don like, ‘How does the ambulance know where to go?’ and ‘Why is there a snake on the ambulance badge?’ Can you remember what Don told us?

We also had a good look around the outside of the ambulance. Don put the lights on and the siren. It was really loud. Can you remember why is has to be really loud?

It was great having Don in school and we hope he can come again sometime.

Safer Internet Day 2016

We are always talking about being safe on the computers and iPads in school but we also talk about staying safe on other devices as well. For Safer Internet Day we had a focus all day on talking about staying safe when we were online.

First we talked about the things that we did online and how we use the internet.

We read the story of Penguin Pig and made up some creatures of our own.

We found some funny animals on the internet by putting duck horse into Google and looked at the images. How many of these do you think are real? They’re all there on the internet though! We talked about how you have to use your brain and think about if what you’re seeing is true.

We made up some great animals of our own thinking of what we would like to see at the zoo if we could see anything we wanted.

We talked about the story and here’s some of what we said…..

Is it a good idea to go and meet a stranger alone? 

Aiva- “If you went to the zoo, you’d take your mummy, dad, nan or grandad.”

Ruby- “Some people might take you away.”

Aissata- “It could be someone who’s invisible.” 

Lacey- “Its making the wrong decision (to go and meet them)”

What could it be behind the door (in the story)?

Corey- “Could be a robber.”

Samuel- “Robbers are bad guys.”

Narla- “They pinching children.”

Samuel- “It might frighten you.”

Harvey M- “Might be the Keeper. It might be a cardboard cut out and they’re hiding behind it.”

Is everything real on the internet? 

Lucas- “No, some bad people tell lies and want to take you away.”

Elisha- “Penguin Pig is pretend, its not real, its not in the zoo.”

Why do you have to be 18 to play some games?

Corey- “Theres too much bad language.”

Alfie- “You could turn down the sound.”

Lucas- “You could see nasty books.”

Harvey M- “I could just play on motorbike games where you just do stunts. You just get back on, you don’t die.”

Dalton- “Violence means when you’re older and play on GTA.”

How do we stay safe on the internet at home? 

Reo- “If we see something we don’t like we tell can tell our mum.”

Corey- “We can press the x and then tell our mum.”

We also watched a Hector’s World Video and thought about what we tell people on computers about ourselves. We know not to give out our personal information online.

Safer Internet Day 2015

During Safety Week we celebrated Safer Internet Day to raise awareness of staying safe when we were using the Internet. First we talked about all the different places we can use the Internet. Can you think of anymore? Which ones do you use at your house with your children?

We read a story which helped us think about staying safe on the Internet and about what is true or not.

We watched a video about keeping our details safe on the Internet and not telling anyone them. If you want to watch it you can find it here or on the class Purple Mash page.

We’re always talking about passwords in school and the children know we have to keep them a secret. We have our own passwords for Purple Mash and websites such a Phonics Play.

We also talk about what to do if we’re using the Internet and we see something we don’t like. There’s lots of amazing things to do on the Internet but not all of it is good. In school we have a firewall set up so unsuitable sites are blocked. Do you have your parental controls switched on at home to keep your children safe?

It is important that you reinforce these vital messages at home too. The Internet is a wonderful resource but can also be dangerous if not used properly. It is a part of the children’s everyday life so we need to make sure they are taught how to stay safe themselves and what to do if anything happens. Buildings, Structures and Homes

We had a great time in the first half of Spring term learning all about Buildings, Structures and Homes. The children decided this was what they wanted to learn about while we get ready for our New School.

First we asked the children what they would want to learn about…….

We read the story of the Three Little Pigs and it became our storytelling text for the half term.. Look on the blog for a post about our storytelling. The children thought about what they would use to build a house if the big bad wolf came to Manor Top and why that would be the best material.

Once some of the children had decided on the bricks to build a solid wall for the house the used the rest of the materials to create the rest of the house. Doesn’t it look great?

There were lots of other building activities for us to do too. We had great fun exploring them all. There was more going on than we could take photos of to show you!

The children loved the freedom and creativity of the role play area which they could make anything they wanted to be.

One our favourites was using the sand cement to build sticking the blocks together. If you want to make some at home just mix shaving foam with some sand- it’s that easy 🙂

There were lots of Elsa castles popping up all over the place but these ones with the sugar cubes were particularly popular.  What could you build from using materials at your house?

During the whole school Safety Week, Stephen from the new build came to talk to us about being safe on and near building sites. He also showed us some pictures of what our new school is going to look like. It was very exciting to see the pictures and we can’t wait to see it for real.
