This Week’s Awards- Spring 2 Week 2

There are two more superstars this week ready to share their learning with everyone.

Our writer of the week has been growing in confidence all year and recently has started writing all the time! She is now writing sentences herself and remembering all the words. In this activity she wrote the first sentence all by herself which was amazing. We looked at it though with a sentence hand to see what she had missed. We then talked about writing the sentence with a sentence hand and I modelled it to show her. She was then able to rewrite the sentence using her finger for the finger spaces. She even changed one of the words. Three days later when she got her Writer of the Week pencil she could still remember what she’d written! Great job!

Our Mathematician of the Week found the same spot in the classroom to do her learning. She was writing calculations though. Look at her amazing learning.

Well done! We’ll keep working on that number orientation and making sure we record left to right.

Day 100!!!!!

We have been counting to Day 100 since we first started full time school way back in September. Can you remember our first days at school? Have a look at the blog post from when we started school. Click here to see it. We’ve all done a lot of growing since then and have got a lot cleverer!

We have been putting a straw in our pockets every day since then and marking it off on the hundred square. You can see when we first started on one of our first ever Mathematician of the Week blog post. Click here to see it.

Everyone was very excited that the day had finally come. We’d been planning our promised party for a couple of weeks now!

We did have to do some counting though. We found the easiest ways to count to 100 was to count to ten ten times. Can you see the different ways we have counted in this way?

Some children even measured the KS2 corridor using their steps. They had to predict if they thought there would be 100 steps from the Studio all the way to Miss French’s Office at the other end.

When we found out the steps gave us different measurements we learnt about a metre stick which turned out to have 100 centimetres on it. We’d found another 100! Children had to find objects which were longer or shorter than a metre and record them in their book.

We’d been busy during the week getting ready. Jayden thought we need decorations so got busy making some in the Workshop. We also made some special Day 100 Crowns which meant we had to do lots of counting.

 

When it got to Wednesday it was time for our party 🙂

Miss Bibby came through from Nursery with a surprise for us. The Nursery kids had been making pizza for their Pizza Day and sent some through for us to have at our party. You can see more about their Pizza Day here.  Thanks Nursery, we thought your pizza was yummy!

We’d thought about the other things we wanted for our party and decided that it couldn’t be a proper party without a chocolate cake and musical statues!

There was one last job to do… we needed to say well done to the rest of the school for their 100 days in school this year. We went to visit every classroom and took them a certificate. They were the same certificates that we got one of each to say well done to us!

What fabulous Day 100! Now we’re interested to know if we will get Day 100.

Don’t forget your Day 100 Homework to bring a collection of 100 items from home. We’ll be putting them on the wall in the classroom for everyone to see. 

What have we been learning? 

  • To count to ten confidently and count out that many objects. 
  • To count in tens to 100 and know what this looks like. 
  • To complete challenges and answer questions. 
  • To measure in different ways and think about which is best. 
  • To think about ourselves as old people and talk about what we might be able to do. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Try some of the activities at home like counting pennies in towers or throwing the dice. 
  • Count out objects in your home, for example, how many stairs are there on the way to bed? 
  • Count the days until you do something important, like go on holiday, a special visit or until your child’s birthday.

Pancake Day 2017

We all love pancakes and loved that we got to make some of our own. We had to follow the instructions and mix the batter ourselves. We had to be very careful and remember what we had learnt in Safety Week about staying safe in the kitchen.

Some children remembered what they had learnt when we made pancakes and used it to write their own lists of ingredients later in the week. Leighanna sounded out to write her list.

Mateo drew pictures to write his list and then Jakoby labelled them to finish it when they were making pancakes in the Mud Kitchen.

We used the toppings that we liked to do some maths. We used the cubes to make towers and see which was the most popular before using Purple Mash to create a pictogram. It which easy to see which two toppings were the favourite and we were able to say which one was more and which was the most popular.

This Weeks Award’s- Spring 1 Week 7

Our Mathematician has been a subtraction whizz this week. She has been using the objects in the classroom to take some away and find out how many are left. She has been working out how to record her ideas using number sentences.

Our Writer has been working really hard to write her full name and has even been practising it at home. Well done! (There is no photo as it is of her name)

The Last Chocolate

We ended up with a problem in Onyx Class this week. It was Valentine’s Day so we did lots of Maths using some chocolates. The chocolate really helped us as we were able to see how many we were taking away alongside the number line. We were all looking forward to a chocolate on Friday as we had been promised by Miss Parker and Miss Morris.

On Thursday we decided that it would be kind to give our chocolates to Garnet Class when we sang them a Friendship song on Friday. Some of us weren’t too sure to begin with but after we talked about it we decided that it was the right thing and although it wasn’t the easiest thing we wanted to be kind to Garnet Class.

On Friday we went to get the chocolates to take them with us as we went to the Studio to sing our song. But……. image

What were we going to do??? We couldn’t give Garnet Class one chocolate!

We ended up leaving the Studio without giving Garnet Class any chocolates at all. Even though the lovely songs had cheered us up a bit we felt a little bit sad. We went back to the classroom with only one chocolate.

Then we had an idea…..image

Some of us still felt a little bit sad on Friday afternoon because the rest of the chocolates still hadn’t come back but we knew we’d done the right thing giving Miss French our last chocolate. We talked about how it was difficult but the fair thing to do.

Everyone was very excited that the chocolates were back and that we’d done the right thing. Everyone went home happy, including Miss French 🙂

What have we been learning? 

  • to think of others before ourselves
  • to make up and sing our own songs
  • to make decisions which are fair even if they are difficult

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • make up your own songs using familiar tunes, 

eg. If you want to be my friend, clap your hands, 

If you want to be my friend, clap your hands, 

If you want to be my friend and you really want to play, 

If you want to be my friend, clap your hands.

  • include your child in some decision making, e.g. when handing out biscuits how can you make sure it is fair? 
  • encourage your child to do things for other people, e.g. picking up something that someone has dropped on the floor or letting someone have a turn before them.

This Week’s Awards- Spring 1 Week 6

We are particularly proud of our Writer of the Week this week. He has been determined to win the award and consequently has been trying really hard with his writing all week. He has done independent writing nearly every day! He has been challenged to write about different things and to start including more finger spaces. Great job!

Our Mathematician of the Week also did a fabulous job this week. She initiated her own activity in the classroom counting the correct number of pegs.  She was then able to extend it when challenged to order the numbers she had. She spotted some were missing so knew to add them in. Our Mathematician  was also spotted helping her friends with their Maths earlier in the week. Fabulous!!!

A Singing Start- A Recap

Do you remember we told you about the music sessions were having with Martin? The children loved learning new songs and having fun with music.

The children in Nursery (FS1) also enjoyed sessions with Martin and there was the after school Shake, Rattle and Roll Music Club that we loved going to with our parents and families.

Miss Hulme has made a video all about the Singing Start sessions we’ve had in school. You can watch it by either looking at the Diamond Class blog post or going straight to the video here.

Thanks Miss Hulme. It was great watching back the fun we had and remembering when we learnt the songs. We are still singing them in class and learning some new ones.
