Celebrating Mother’s Day

On Monday we invited all our Mums and carers to school to say thank you for looking after us. We all met in the Main Hall with the rest of Foundation Stage and Key Stage One.

We sang some songs to our Mums and carers to say how special we thought they were and how much we loved them. In Foundation Stage we sang a song called Skidamarink. Can you remember the words? We sang a song with everyone else as well called My Mum’s One in a Million.

When we’d finished singing it was time for us to give our gifts to our Mums and carers. When we talked about Mother’s Day in class lots of the children said that their mummies liked flowers so we decided to plant them some seeds. All that they needed to do was add water and watch what happens now. What do you think will happen?

Day 100!!!!!

We have been counting to Day 100 since we first started full time school way back in September. Can you remember our first days at school? Have a look at the blog post from when we started school. Click here to see it. We’ve all done a lot of growing since then and have got a lot cleverer!

We have been putting a straw in our pockets every day since then and marking it off on the hundred square. You can see when we first started on one of our first ever Mathematician of the Week blog post. Click here to see it.

Everyone was very excited that the day had finally come. We’d been planning our promised party for a couple of weeks now!

We did have to do some counting though. We found the easiest ways to count to 100 was to count to ten ten times. Can you see the different ways we have counted in this way?

Some children even measured the KS2 corridor using their steps. They had to predict if they thought there would be 100 steps from the Studio all the way to Miss French’s Office at the other end.

When we found out the steps gave us different measurements we learnt about a metre stick which turned out to have 100 centimetres on it. We’d found another 100! Children had to find objects which were longer or shorter than a metre and record them in their book.

We’d been busy during the week getting ready. Jayden thought we need decorations so got busy making some in the Workshop. We also made some special Day 100 Crowns which meant we had to do lots of counting.

 

When it got to Wednesday it was time for our party 🙂

Miss Bibby came through from Nursery with a surprise for us. The Nursery kids had been making pizza for their Pizza Day and sent some through for us to have at our party. You can see more about their Pizza Day here.  Thanks Nursery, we thought your pizza was yummy!

We’d thought about the other things we wanted for our party and decided that it couldn’t be a proper party without a chocolate cake and musical statues!

There was one last job to do… we needed to say well done to the rest of the school for their 100 days in school this year. We went to visit every classroom and took them a certificate. They were the same certificates that we got one of each to say well done to us!

What fabulous Day 100! Now we’re interested to know if we will get Day 100.

Don’t forget your Day 100 Homework to bring a collection of 100 items from home. We’ll be putting them on the wall in the classroom for everyone to see. 

What have we been learning? 

  • To count to ten confidently and count out that many objects. 
  • To count in tens to 100 and know what this looks like. 
  • To complete challenges and answer questions. 
  • To measure in different ways and think about which is best. 
  • To think about ourselves as old people and talk about what we might be able to do. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Try some of the activities at home like counting pennies in towers or throwing the dice. 
  • Count out objects in your home, for example, how many stairs are there on the way to bed? 
  • Count the days until you do something important, like go on holiday, a special visit or until your child’s birthday.

World Book Day 2017

We had a fabulous time celebrating World Book Day this year. Everyone came to school dressed as their favourite book characters, including all the teachers! Can you remember what everyone came dressed as?  The winning costume in our class was this one- well done!!!

We’d been doing maths this week linked to data handling and creating graphs so we decided to find out our favourite book. Everyone had a cube and voted for their favourite using their cube. We then made the cubes into towers to see which was the tallest. After that we turned the information we had collected into lots of different graphs which showed the same information in different ways. Can you see which our favourite was?

We had to turn our classroom door into our favourite book. We did it a little bit differently though. Although Oi Dog! was our favourite we made our door into Oi Frog! We decided that you couldn’t read Oi Dog! if you’ve not read Oi Frog! because, as Jayden pointed out, “the beginning of Oi Dog! is the end of Oi Frog!” We wanted to make sure everyone in school knew about the first book. Everyone worked really hard as a team to make the decorations for our door. Some children even had to write why they thought the book was hilarious, just like the sticker on the actual book cover.

Once we’d done our door we went for a walk round school to look at everyone else’s. Didn’t they do an amazing job? Can you see which ones School Council made the winner? Which one is your favourite?

We also all visited the School Library to get a book to take home. There were so many books to take home it was sometimes difficult to decide which one we wanted. Everyone chose the one they wanted and had it stamped before taking it home. We’re going to visit the School Library every Thursday if we’ve brought our book back.

What another great World Book Day!

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Read books together everyday. It is proven that reading everyday, just for ten minutes, makes children much better readers. 
  • Use your £1 World Book Day token to get either a free book or to get money off any book of your choice. 
  • Make sure your child returns their school library book so they can take another one each week and visit the Manor Top Library together regularly.

A Visit from the Ambulance

We had a special visitor on the Monday of Safety Week. Don from the Ambulance service came to see everyone in FS and KS1. First of all he talked to us in the Hall. We found out about his job and how he keeps people safe. Then we got to see his special uniform and some children got to try it on.

After that we went outside to see the ambulance. Some of us were a bit worried about going in the ambulance because we’d never been in one before but everyone had a turn. We thought of some questions to ask Don like, ‘How does the ambulance know where to go?’ and ‘Why is there a snake on the ambulance badge?’ Can you remember what Don told us?

We also had a good look around the outside of the ambulance. Don put the lights on and the siren. It was really loud. Can you remember why is has to be really loud?

It was great having Don in school and we hope he can come again sometime.

This Week’s Awards- Spring 1 Week 5

This week’s Mathematician of the Week was spotted in the Funky Fingers Area. She was making Chinese dragon tails but while she did this she was also doing some great maths. She was able to count the beads as when she threaded them onto the skewer. She was able to make a pattern with them and also compare the number of beads on the first skewer and the second one saying which one was more! Great job!

Our Writer of the Week worked really hard to write names of his family. He was then challenged to take his learning further and put the words in a sentence. You can see his writing on his individual display in the classroom if you want to see more. Well done!

This week also saw the end of Books at Bedtime. To celebrate all the children (and teachers!) wore their pyjamas to school. Our winner got a special grand prize for reading 15 bedtime stories. We went to a special assembly with everyone else in FS2 and Key Stage One. We’ve all loved reading bedtime stories with our grown ups and hope that we get to keep reading them even though Books at Bedtime has finished.

Grandparent’s Day Afternoon Tea

Lots of us had a wonderful time on Monday 3rd October at the Grandparents’ Afternoon Tea. It was lovely to be able to spend some time with our grandparents and welcome them to school.

We’d been busy the week before baking lots of cakes to give to our grandparents. We found a special recipe where you have to balance all the ingredients with an egg. It was great as we could bake ourselves with the grown ups just checking we were doing it right.

Once the cakes were baked then we had to decorate them.

At the Afternoon Tea,  we played some games together and then it was time for tea and cake, although you could have coffee and biscuits if you preferred. Everyone had a wonderful time.

Father’s Day Fun 2016

We recently had a wonderful afternoon celebrating Father’s Day with Garnet class and Key Stage One. We invited any male member of our family to come and play with us outdoors at school. Lots of our dads, granddads, uncles and big brother came. We said no mums because they had their turn when it was Mother’s Day.

When our dads and other relatives got to school and found us we got to play lots of games outside with them. Some people decided to play football, some played hockey, some played in the water areas together. We could choose what we wanted to do. Look at the fun we had…

A huge thank you to all the dads and other family members who came to support this event. The children LOVED seeing you there and spending time at school with you.

To say thank you to our dads and other male family members, we made them trophies! THANK YOU!!!

What have we been learning? 

  • To play games in the outdoor environment. 
  • To say thank you to important people in our lives. 
  • To combine materials in the workshop to make a trophy. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Go to the park and play some of the ball games, such as football, there. 
  • Work out the rules of the game and try to write them down. 
  • Decide who else you could say thank you to and why you want to say thank you.
