Eid Mubarak

Throughout the month of Ramadan we had been thinking about the Islamic celebration of Eid and why Muslims celebrate Ramadan. We had a Ramadan Advent calendar and used it to count down. We learnt that we had to wait for the new moon.

While we were opening our calendar it started a discussion about Ramadan and  Eid. Some of our friends in Onyx class are Muslims and celebrate at their houses. They shared what they knew with us all. Everyone was interested to know what happened.

Zane’s mum, Sara, came to speak to us. She also works at our school so lots of us know her. She told us about some of the decorations of their house and what they eat to break their fast every morning. Did you know during Ramadan grown up Muslims are not allowed to eat when the sun is up? it is called a fast. This is help them think about people who do not have lots of the things they need, like lots of food.

Sara sent us an email to show us some picture of these things.

We wrote a reply to Sara using our class email account.

Once we arrived back at school after the Spring Bank break we knew some children in our class would need a day off school. This is because Eid was finally here. We decided we would like to have a celebration all together so we planned for a party with the rest of Foundation Stage and Key Stage One.

We decided to bake biscuits for our party. We made them in the shapes of stars and made sure we made enough to share with all our friends.

Zane’s big brother came to show us the special prayer mat and how it is used for praying. We were all very interested to find out what happened.

And then it was the day of our celebration. We started the day with a workshop for our parents and carers. It was wonderful to see so many of our families stay and make Ramadan and Eid crafts with us.

In the afternoon we all gathered in the main hall together. We were allowed to bring our party clothes to get changed into. Everyone had a wonderful time dancing to traditional music and enjoying the special foods.

Everyone LOVED our special Eid celebrations 🙂

What have we been learning?

  • That different religions have different celebrations.
  • About some of the special things that Muslims do at Ramadan and Eid.
  • About how we are the same and different as our friends.

How can can you continue the learning at home?

  • Talk to your child about the different things that your family celebrate.
  • Talk about how we are the same and different to each other.
  • Look on the CBeebies programme Lets Celebrate and find out more. Click here to watch the videos.
  • Go to the Library and find some books about Islam, Ramadan and Eid. 51FF059B-FE57-41B4-83F0-50B6791E322C

Grandparents’ Afternoon Tea

We really appreciate the role grandparents have in the lives of the children in our school. This is why we decided to celebrate Grandparents’ Day again this year with an Afternoon Tea. All grandparents in Foundation Stage and Key Stage one were invited and there was a great uptake. We had a very busy Hall full of children loving some special time with their grandparents. Everyone got to enjoy the special biscuits which the children had prepared while they played the games together.

A huge thank you to everyone who came and made it such a great event 🙂

Sports Day 2018

We had a fabulous time at Sports Day. We were able to go up on the field for the first time and it is another wonderful space we get to enjoy at our school. We joined up with Key Stage One and our families were invited to join in the fun.

After we’d had a turn we let our grown ups have a go at racing. There was a Mummies, Nannans and other girls race then a Daddies, Grandads and other boys race. The teachers had a turn as well! We were very proud when Miss Deakin was the winner 🙂

Once all the races and activities were finished  we found out which team was the winners with the most points. Each team had children from ever class so these are the winners from Onyx Class. Everyone else got a certificate to say well done for taking part.

Father’s Day Fun

It was one of our favourite days on Friday when we invited all our dads, granddads, uncles and other male relatives to school for the afternoon. We joined with the rest of Foundation Stage and Key Stage One so we also got to play with our brothers and sisters. We had such a great time in our outdoor area, on the Park and down on the MUGA.

We’d been busy during the week making trophies and cards for our dads as well. We took them home to say a big thank you for helping to look after us.

A huge thank you to everyone who came and made the afternoon such a success!

Well done Onyx Class!

You had the best Attendance in the whole of Foundation Stage and Key Stage One for the Spring term. That means you came to school more than any other class between Christmas and Easter!

We hope you enjoyed your special treat of extra ‘park’ time and snacks 🙂

Thanks to all the parents and carers for making sure your children are in school everyday and on time. It makes a massive difference to your child’s learning and gives them the best chance of success.

A Huge Thank You to our Mums

We had a busy week getting ready for Mother’s Day and saying Thank You to our Mums and other female carers. Wed decided that we would like to make them a card and give them a present. Everyone agreed that our mums usually liked flowers so this is what we gave them. The twist was thought that we have help our mums looks after their plant and  wait for them to grow.

We invited our mums into school. If our mums couldn’t make it then nannans could come or aunties or big sisters. The only rule was you had to be a girl! (Dads- don’t worry, you’ll get your turn when its Father’s Day and we say no Mums)

We learnt some songs to sing to our mums and then gave them their special gifts. Nursery and Key Stage One did the same. There were so many people there- over 100 mums and other female carers came! Wow!

We were so pleased to see our mums in school and share this special time with them. Thanks to everyone who came! We hope you enjoyed it 🙂

Books at Bedtime Week 3

For the last week of Books at Bedtime we had a whole celebration day in school. We were all allowed to come to school in our pyjamas! There was a special assembly which Miss Varley held in the main hall with all of FS2 and KS1. Our Grand Prize Winner was announced and she chose a whole collection of Julia Donaldson books as her prize. IMG_0371

We had a storytelling session with our school storyteller Andy Messer which everyone loved. We were all laughing out loud at the story although one part was much scarier.

We also got to have a storytelling session with hot chocolate in the classroom and share some of our favourite stories. One of our friend’s favourite books was in Polish so we had to ask his sister to come and read it to us because Miss Parker struggled with all the pronunciation! We noticed there were lots of books on dinosaurs- maybe we’ll have to learn about them soon…

Thanks and well done to all who took part in the Books at Bedtime competition. Don’t forget to keep reading bedtime stories with your children every night as part of your child’s bedtime routine.
