FS Graduation 2018

One of the best days in FS2 is when we have our FS Graduation to celebrate our time in Foundation Stage at Prince Edward before we move onto Key Stage One. We love it because all the children have a chance to reflect on their learning during the year and tell us what they enjoyed the most. Then we get to share that with all our families.

We sang some songs and then we all stood up to tell everyone what our favourite thing about Foundation Stage had been. We thought about our time with Miss Hulme in Nursery as well. We had to be very brave as there were over 100 adults there for us to talk to.

Mr Siezckarek and Mrs Ainsley came to hand out the certificates and special treats.

We were also given our special string which Miss Parker and Miss Deighton had been holding onto since our first day at school in September. It was exactly the same size as us so we can see how much we’ve grown during the school year. I wonder who has grown the most?!? Don’t forget to tell the teachers how much you’ve grown.

We then got to watch our Graduation Video which is a look back over the year at all the fun things we’ve been learning and experiencing. Everyone loved looking for themselves on the big screen.

Escape from the Volcano

Everyone had been talking about volcanos and playing a game called ‘Escape from the Lava’ for ages so we decided we should learn about volcanoes in class.

Miss Parker found a book which told us a bit more about volcanoes. Can you remember what it taught us?

We also watched a video that lots of us had seen at home. You can watch it again here. Can you tell a grown up how an island grows?

Then we watched some videos of some real volcanoes and found out there were volcanoes erupting right now while we were in school. We thought about how we would feel if there was lava coming towards our homes. Miss Parker told us about when she went to an volcano but thankfully it wasn’t erupting when she was there.

We thought how we would help the people in Hawaii escape after they wrote to us asking for help. We came up with a few suggestions.

There was lots more role play and children wanting to experience what it was like to be near the lava. Outside was a popular place for this and the children loved building bridges and other ways to stay safe. They used our loose parts in all sorts of imaginative ways and even added water to be lava.

 

As the children were so engrossed in making up stories we used this to practise our writing skills. First we had to THINK IT and decide what we wanted to happen in our story. We drew a story map to help us remember it.

Then we had to SAY IT for each sentence so we could remember what to write. Then we had to WRITE IT. We worked hard to sound out the words and think of the letters we needed to write. Here is the beginning and the middle of the story.

When we had written it we had to READ IT to see if we’d done a good job. Can you see the ticks and crosses on our writing? We used the sentence hand to make sure we’d remembered everything putting a tick if we had and a cross if we hadn’t. On Wednesday we forgot our capital letter but on Thursdays we remembered them.

Do you think you could write the end of the story? You could write it on paper and bring it to school or put it in a comment below or an email.

Our learning about volcanoes went over two weeks because we were all so interested and there was so much to learn and do. We decided we wanted to make a volcano of our own and see if we could make it erupt. It took us all week to make. We started with a bottle and some masking tape.

Then we had to use papier-mâché to build the shape of the volcano. It took a long time because we had to wait for it to dry in between.

 

Everyone enjoyed helping with our volcano which was good because there were still more jobs. Next we had to paint our volcanoes. First we painted the mountain and the grass before we added the lava. We used one of our volcano books to help us think what the volcano should look like.

 

Finally our volcano was ready and it was time to watch it erupt. Miss Parker used bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar to create the lava inside the volcano. Everybody loved it and said it was well worth the wait.

We loved learning about volcanoes.

What have we been learning?

  • To find out about volcanoes using videos and books.
  • To find out where volcanoes are using first hand experiences and technology.
  • To build our own volcano and watch it erupt.
  • To role play what we think it would be like near a volcano which is erupting.
  • To make up stories about volcanoes.
  • To think how to stay safe near volcanoes and send our ideas to Hawaii.

How can you continue the learning?

  • Watch the video above and talk about how the volcanoes grow.
  • Use Google to find videos of real volcanoes and watch the lava flow (Make sure before doing any Google search with children that you have the appropriate safety measures in place)
  • Continue the story above writing it either on paper or typing it.

How Do You Help A Dinosaur?

We had a special visitor to our classroom before the Easter holidays. We kept finding footprints in our classroom and the children were quick to say what they thought they were. We had a look around our classroom to see if we could work out what it was.

 

Miss Parker decided to set up a special camera when we all went home to see if we could find out what had been to our classroom. You won’t believe what it was, we caught a dinosaur on camera!!!! It had been right through our classroom!

 

That wasn’t the end of it though. The dinosaur came back the next day and and we saw it on the camera again walking around the other end of our classroom.

 

We couldn’t believe our eyes, especially as this time he had brought us a box. We had to read it. It said,

It was from the dinosaur and he wanted our help. We had to read the letter he had sent us so we knew what to do.

Then there was another reading job to do as we matched the information to the correct dinosaur name. We then made our information into a book for Mr T Rex so he didn’t feel so muddled. He sent us another letter to read which said Thank you.

We loved having a dinosaur come and visit us in school although I think a few of us were glad that we didn’t actually come face to face with a T Rex!

What we have been learning? 

  • to read simple texts with a purpose. 
  • to learn more information about the dinosaurs. 
  • to imagine what it would be like to have a dinosaur in our classroom! 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • read everyday with your child. Even if it is a more difficult text they can help you read it by saying the sounds they know and looking for tricky words such as I, go, no, the, to, into, me, my, be, she etc. 
  • find out some more information about dinosaurs using books and the internet. You can visit the Library and look for books about dinosaurs. Turn the information you find into your own book. 
  • imagine what it would be like to have a dinosaur in your house! Can you draw a picture of what might happen?

Safety Week 2017

We had a very busy Safety Week this year. As you know already we had a visit from Don and his ambulance on Monday. He helped us think about how to keep ourselves safe and how the ambulance and paramedics can help if we do have an accident. On Wednesday when we went to the Hall things looked a bit different. It didn’t look safe at all. What do you think would have happened if we’d have done PE without checking? It helped us think that we must always decide if something looks safe before we use it.

We did a lot of thinking all week about online safety and keeping safe when we use the computers. Tuesday was Safer Internet Day in school. We read the book Penguin Pig by Stuart Spendlow which helped us think about if we should believe everything we see on the computer. You can access the Penguin Pig website here and even find out how to get your own copy for home.

We also read Webster’s Bedtime by Hannah Waley. Webster finds it really hard to turn all his devices off at bedtime which stops him getting to sleep.

We’ve been seeing Hector on our computer all year but we watched a video with him in and talked about how he can help keep us safe too. You can watch the Hector’s World videos here.

We started to look at the different blogs of our friends in the different classes in school. The other classes also started sending us messages on this blog and telling us what they thought. When we’re writing comments on others blogs and also writing our own posts we have to remember the Blog Rules to make sure everyone stays safe and happy. You can see our Blog Rules here. On Friday we had some special visitors from Y3 and Y4 come and see us. They had been making videos to help FS2 learn about staying safe online with Miss Croxall. It was great to have them come and visit and also to learn more about staying safe from them.

Parents/ carers- if you want to know more about what your child said and what their friends said about being safe online look in our Floor Book in class. The children made some interesting comments.

What have we been learning? 

  • how to stay safe online. 
  • that you can’t believe everything you see on a computer. 
  • to be as kind on computers as we are in real life.

Our Fabulous Volcano

We had a great time learning about volcanoes recently. It actually came about due to a misconception that one of the children had when they confused the cave in We’re Going On a Bear Hunt for a volcano.

It started is thinking what is a volcano and could we make our own. First we watched a video about volcanoes to find out more.

Then we started to think if we could make our own volcano which would erupt.

It took a full week to make as we had to do the paper mache and wait for it to dry before we could paint it. We had to look at lots of books and remember the video to find out what they looked like. We went to our school library to find some volcano books.

 

Finally our volcano was ready to see if it would erupt. We were all very excited to see what would happen.

Our volcano did erupt but it also spent some time when it didn’t so we talked about when volcanoes are dormant or extinct.

We also shared our learning with some of the children in Garnet class and showed them our videos.

Christmas Fun

We had a wonderful time continuing to get ready for Christmas. All sorts of exciting things happened at school. We had a visit from Santa. He popped in one afternoon to drop off some early presents.

We also got a message from him a few days later. It was great to find out that he’d got back to the North Pole ok after his visit to school. You can watch the message by following this link SANTA’S MESSAGE

We were super busy in the run up to Christmas making decorations for our families. We made Salt Dough and had to bake it in the oven to make it go hard. See below for the recipe and you can have a go at home.

We had a fun party which everyone loved. Can you see the hats that we made ourselves? Can you tell your grown up how you made your hat?

On the last day of school it was Christmas Jumper Day. We got to dress up and also raise money for charity at the same time. We’re yet to find out the total but look out and we’ll let you know.

Salt Dough Recipe

Instructions:
  1. In a large bowl mix salt and flour together.
  2. Gradually stir in water. Mix well until it forms a doughy consistency.
  3. Turn the dough onto the bench and kneed with your hands until smooth and combined.
  4. Make your creations using the salt dough.
  5. Place the salt dough creations into the oven at 180C

Super Sticker Stories

Miss Parker noticed that the children all loved stickers. When she asked them what they wanted to learn about they gave all sorts of answers so we decided to learn about lots of different things while linking the learning through our love of stickers. Look at the pages in our Floor book to see what we learning we did….

One of the other great things that we did was become authors using the stickers to help us. We learnt that stories have a beginning, a middle and an end. We also learnt if we were going to be story authors our story would need a problem in the middle which was then solved at the end.

First we made up some stories orally and recorded them on a special video. Click on the link to see the three stories we made up.

The following week it was our turn to write the stories we made up. We wrote one as a whole class and then we all had a go at doing some writing of our own. Some children concentrated on writing the initial sounds they could hear in words, some children wrote the beginning sentence of their story and some children were challenged to write the whole of their story!

To help them the children had a sentence hand, a phoneme strip and some tricky word bookmarks. The sound button makes it easier to remember what we are trying to write. This made it much easier to remember all the different things you need to when you’re writing.

  • See if you can make up some stories of your own using stickers if you have them or by drawing three pictures. 
  • Encourage your children to write as independently as possible by listening for the sounds in word and writing the ones they can hear. Don’t expect them to be able to write everything correctly. Look at the examples above for ideas of what your child should be achieving at this stage in FS2.
