Onyx Class Hairdressers

We had a new area formed in our classroom this week. The children asked if they could turn the house into a hairdressers! Of course we said yes but the children had some jobs to do first. They had to let us know what they thought the hairdressers would need to be the best hairdressers there had ever been.

The very first job was to tidy away all the resources we’d had out for the house.

With Miss Morris’ help the children made all the signs they would need including price lists and posters with opening times.

 

And then the children could get busy being hairdressers! This included some good receptionists as well to take the bookings and answer the phones.

Our hairdressers didn’t just do hair. There was a nail salon as well so the theme of colour mixing (from the dinosaur) was continued and the children who were interested had a to mix the colours they thought would make the best nail varnish colours. Some children decided to draw their best nail art designs in a booklet to show customers.

We had a great time in Onyx Class Hairdressers. Lots of children from Garnet class came to visit as well. We’ve never looked so good!

The Last Chocolate

We ended up with a problem in Onyx Class this week. It was Valentine’s Day so we did lots of Maths using some chocolates. The chocolate really helped us as we were able to see how many we were taking away alongside the number line. We were all looking forward to a chocolate on Friday as we had been promised by Miss Parker and Miss Morris.

On Thursday we decided that it would be kind to give our chocolates to Garnet Class when we sang them a Friendship song on Friday. Some of us weren’t too sure to begin with but after we talked about it we decided that it was the right thing and although it wasn’t the easiest thing we wanted to be kind to Garnet Class.

On Friday we went to get the chocolates to take them with us as we went to the Studio to sing our song. But……. image

What were we going to do??? We couldn’t give Garnet Class one chocolate!

We ended up leaving the Studio without giving Garnet Class any chocolates at all. Even though the lovely songs had cheered us up a bit we felt a little bit sad. We went back to the classroom with only one chocolate.

Then we had an idea…..image

Some of us still felt a little bit sad on Friday afternoon because the rest of the chocolates still hadn’t come back but we knew we’d done the right thing giving Miss French our last chocolate. We talked about how it was difficult but the fair thing to do.

Everyone was very excited that the chocolates were back and that we’d done the right thing. Everyone went home happy, including Miss French 🙂

What have we been learning? 

  • to think of others before ourselves
  • to make up and sing our own songs
  • to make decisions which are fair even if they are difficult

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • make up your own songs using familiar tunes, 

eg. If you want to be my friend, clap your hands, 

If you want to be my friend, clap your hands, 

If you want to be my friend and you really want to play, 

If you want to be my friend, clap your hands.

  • include your child in some decision making, e.g. when handing out biscuits how can you make sure it is fair? 
  • encourage your child to do things for other people, e.g. picking up something that someone has dropped on the floor or letting someone have a turn before them.

Onyx the Dog Goes Home

Onyx the Dog who we got on our recent visit to Build a Bear Workshop has started visiting the children’s houses.

When Onyx Dog comes to your house you will find the special Adventures book. You can read about our visit to Build a Bear. The children formed the sentences themselves. You can also see what he has been doing at everyone else’s house. Help your child read the words and look at the pictures talking about what Onyx has been doing.

Please help your child add their entry to the book by allowing them to write their own sentence about what Onyx Dog did at their house. If you want to write under it or add more that’s fine but its really important the children get chance to do some writing (with your help)

A Visit to Build A Bear Workshop Visit

We had a wonderful time last week when we visited Build a Bear Workshop at Meadowhall. We had to walk to the bus stop and catch the number 18 bus. We saw lots of interesting things out of the window on the way.

Once we got to Meadowhall Bus Interchange then we had to walk to find Build a Bear Workshop. We had to go across roads, go up steps, go over bridges, go down escalators and walk past all the shops. It was a great opportunity to use some of the position words we’ve been learning in Maths this week and last. It also gave us a good opportunity to practise our reading and work out what it said on the floor. Can you read it to a grown up now? 

Corey also managed to spot a volcano! Can you see it? This was good because Mateo had been asking when we were going on our Volcano Hunt.

We made it to Build a Bear Workshop 🙂

Once we got to Build a Bear Workshop we had the serious business to attend to and a bear to choose! We had three bears to choose from… can you remember which one you wanted? 

Everyone helped to fill our bear with fluff by pressing the pedal with our foot. We worked together with our friend.

Then we had to make a wish to put in our bear and also blow lots of kisses with fill our new friend with love. Then they were tied at the back so nothing fell back out.

After that we had to choose a name for our bear; we choose Onyx Dog when we talked about it. The last thing we had to do was get Onyx Dog some clothes so she can come to all our houses and school. While the grown ups had a look for some clothes for us to choose from we all had a hug with Onyx Dog and said hello for the first time.

Then we were ready to go back to school so we had to go and find the Bus Interchange again. We found the right bus stop using the letters and numbers and caught the bus back to school. Everyone was very sensible when the bus we should have been catching didn’t run and we had to wait for the next bus.

Everyone was very excited on the way back because it was a double decker bus and Miss Parker let us sit upstairs. We wondered if we would fit under the bridge but thankfully we did!

The excitement wasn’t over then though. When we got back to school there were lots and lots of fire engines outside school! Thankfully the firefighters were only practising in the old school building and there was no real fire. It meant we got to have a really good look at them as we walked past.

Well done Onyx Class! You were superstars all morning and made it a wonderful visit. I’m sure Onyx Dog is looking forward to coming to all your houses for a visit soon. Also a HUGE thank you to all the parents who came with us, we couldn’t go on our visits without you!

How Are You Feeling Today?

You might have seen the new display in our classroom called How Are You Feeling Today? We look at it twice a day every day to see how everyone is feeling and if they are feeling sad or scared we think of how we can help them. We understand that not everyone will be happy all of the time but we don’t want anyone to be unhappy or worried when we can help them. We also talk about the different ways in which we can be happy. We’ve used the characters from Inside Out to help us understand the different feelings.

These are some of the things we say when we put our pictures onto the different emotions.

As you can see there are still question marks for Disgust. Not many children have chosen this emotion so we’ve not heard many reasons for why you might feel disgust. Can you think of any with your grown ups? 

If we do say something that is making us sad or worried there is always a chance for the children to talk to a grown up about it and hopefully they can help. Any serious concerns or worries would be followed up using the correct school procedures and policies.

The children put their pictures up first thing in the morning just before we start our first morning carpet session and then look at them again straight after dinnertime.

The whole school does something similar with the children giving a number out of 10 to say how they are feeling each day.

You Can’t Catch Me…

We had a visitor in Onyx class the other week. The Gingerbread Man left us some clues in our classroom. We had to go on Gingerbread Man hunt around the whole school. He left us some clues to work out. Can you remember where the clues told us to go? 

I didn’t want to be a snack, I bet you’ll never get me back. Now got to the place where there’s lot of books. 

Mr Sieczkarek told me to stop running away or I wouldn’t be able to go out and play. I walked away before we could meet and went to the place where we eat. 

You’ve not caught me yet but you will soon I bet. I’ll tell you for free I’ve gone where their three. 

We found out where lots of new places were in our school. Some of us had never been there before. We also got to meet lots of people who work in our school. Can you remember all the places we went? Can you remember all the people we meet along the way? 

When we got back to the classroom we found some gingerbread men. Everyone enjoyed their special treat. It started us talking about the Gingerbread Man and what we knew about him.

We decided that’s what we want to learn about the week after. We retold the story, we acted out the story, we counted gingerbread men, we made some of our own in the creative workshop and then we baked some of our own as well. It was a busy week!

We had an interesting question to find out in Maths as well- Which part of the Gingerbread Man do you eat first? Although Miss Parker didn’t tell us this at first, she just told us that we were only allowed to take one bite. It was hard not to gobble him all up! When we took our bite we looked to see who had eaten which part first. Most of us had eaten the head first!

And we still never caught the Gingerbread Man. We only got to eat the little ones he left for us. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for him at home!

Settling In

The Summer is over and we’ve all now started in Onyx class and have been doing a fantastic job of settling in. Miss Parker, Miss Morris and all the other teachers have been so proud of us and how grown up we’ve been. We’ve been having loads of fun exploring our new classroom and the outdoor area. For some of us there haven’t been that many differences from Nursery at Prince Edward but some of us have had to get used to everything being different.

We’ve also been learning to use the self serve snack area where we can choose between water and milk each day and have a piece of fruit. We have to remember to wash our hands and put all our rubbish in the bins ourselves.

 

We also had chance to explore the new outdoor ‘park’ on one of our first days. We’ve been talking about how to make sure we stay safe when we are playing on it and what to do when we can’t reach the next bit. There were lots of determined faces as they children really challenged themselves to be successful. We also talked about how the equipment is only for use in school time when school adults are supervising. Please remember not to allow your child to play on the equipment at the beginning and end of the school day. 

At the end of last week we went to the Dinner Hall for our dinners. It was very exciting to be like the big kids and eat our dinner in the Hall. Jayden even said, “School dinners are the best” and Mateo said he was going to have a dinner at school everyday! All the teachers, including Mr Sieczkarek and Mrs Ainsley, were impressed at how well the children coped with all the new routines. We loved seeing some of our older brothers, sisters and friends in the hall and we’re all super excited to go and play outside after our dinner with them next week.
