A Singing Start- A Recap

Do you remember we told you about the music sessions were having with Martin? The children loved learning new songs and having fun with music.

The children in Nursery (FS1) also enjoyed sessions with Martin and there was the after school Shake, Rattle and Roll Music Club that we loved going to with our parents and families.

Miss Hulme has made a video all about the Singing Start sessions we’ve had in school. You can watch it by either looking at the Diamond Class blog post or going straight to the video here.

Thanks Miss Hulme. It was great watching back the fun we had and remembering when we learnt the songs. We are still singing them in class and learning some new ones.

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!

We read a book read a book called Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Williems after the bus driver sent it to us. We’d had a letter from the pigeon telling us he would drive the bus for us after he heard about the bus driver bumping the bus at Meadowhall. The bus driver said not to let him but we weren’t so sure.

These are the letters that we received. Can you read any of the words? 

Some of us wrote some letters back with the teacher’s help.

It made us think what other combinations we could think of and if it would be a good idea for those animals to drive the vehicles. We made a book of our ideas. You can find it in our Book Corner if you’d like to read it and see who wrote which page.

What have we been learning? 

  • to consider different possibilities and give reasons for our thoughts
  • to follow the pattern of language and create a repeating text 
  • to write our ideas listening to the sounds we hear
  • to write using finger spaces (with some reminders from our teachers)
  • to write some of the tricky words we know from memory, e.g. the

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • make up some more pages for our book and have a go at writing your idea down. You could draw a picture first to show your idea. 
  • give reasons for other decisions you make and say why you think you are right. 
  • try to write other words and sentences down listening to the sounds in words. Parents/ carers- if you look at the writing above you’ll see the children haven’t spelt every word perfectly. At this stage we want them to listen to the sounds they heard and know the letters. We want them to see themselves as independent writers.

This Week’s Awards- Spring 1 Week 4

Our Mathematician of the Week was extremely motivated to word hard all week to achieve the award. She was spotted by every member of staff trying hard with her maths and seeking to develop her skills, especially in writing the numbers. At the beginning of the week she was copying them to write them but by the end of the week she was doing it much more independently. Great job!

Writer of the Week this week did a fantastic job at independent writing. She has sounded out to spell and used some of the tricky word spellings, such as the, which she knows from memory. She was then able to read it back to an adult remembering what she had written. We can’t wait to see what you write next! Well done!

Our Books at Bedtime winner was drawn out again on Friday. We had 14 cards back from the whole class which is great. Don’t forget to keep reading bedtime books again all this week and return your card next Friday for the final winner. Its also PJ Day in FS and KS1 next Friday to celebrate the end of Books at Bedtime. There’ll be a letter during the week so keep a look out.

Judo Fun

We had a lovely surprise on Friday when Gareth from British Judo came to school. We’d been hearing about some of the other children in school who’d been to sessions with him and it sounded really good fun. We were excited for our turn.

We had to be really good at listening to instructions and doing what Gareth told us. He told us we could be bears, wiggly worms or frogs and this would make our bodies strong. Then we learnt how to fall over properly! We had to make our bodies strong and fall over backwards with a roll. Everyone did amazingly well and Gareth was very impressed.

This Week’s Awards- Spring 1 Week 3

Its been another great week in Onyx Class this week. After not knowing for ages who would be Mathematician and Writer this week it became a close run thing on Friday afternoon who the winners would be.

Mathematician of the Week- 

This young lady did a wonderful job at thinking of a different way to use our Numicon and not just filling up the board. She used the dice as well to make a game. We’ve been hearing lots of reports that she’s been doing more Maths at home and its really paying off. Well done!

Writer of the Week

Our writer this week not only wrote all the words he needed himself but he also thought about what he wanted to write and remembered it so he wrote all the words correctly. He was able to read it back to check his spelling and work out the correct spelling of the tricky word the using his reading skills to help. Great job!

We had one more winner this week linked to our Books at Bedtime Challenge. Well done to everyone who sent their challenge card for week one back to school. Its great to see all the bedtime stories you’ve been enjoying. Don’t forget to read this week as well (and catch up if you forgot last week) before bringing it back to school on Friday. A Visit to Build A Bear Workshop Visit

We had a wonderful time last week when we visited Build a Bear Workshop at Meadowhall. We had to walk to the bus stop and catch the number 18 bus. We saw lots of interesting things out of the window on the way.

Once we got to Meadowhall Bus Interchange then we had to walk to find Build a Bear Workshop. We had to go across roads, go up steps, go over bridges, go down escalators and walk past all the shops. It was a great opportunity to use some of the position words we’ve been learning in Maths this week and last. It also gave us a good opportunity to practise our reading and work out what it said on the floor. Can you read it to a grown up now? 

Corey also managed to spot a volcano! Can you see it? This was good because Mateo had been asking when we were going on our Volcano Hunt.

We made it to Build a Bear Workshop 🙂

Once we got to Build a Bear Workshop we had the serious business to attend to and a bear to choose! We had three bears to choose from… can you remember which one you wanted? 

Everyone helped to fill our bear with fluff by pressing the pedal with our foot. We worked together with our friend.

Then we had to make a wish to put in our bear and also blow lots of kisses with fill our new friend with love. Then they were tied at the back so nothing fell back out.

After that we had to choose a name for our bear; we choose Onyx Dog when we talked about it. The last thing we had to do was get Onyx Dog some clothes so she can come to all our houses and school. While the grown ups had a look for some clothes for us to choose from we all had a hug with Onyx Dog and said hello for the first time.

Then we were ready to go back to school so we had to go and find the Bus Interchange again. We found the right bus stop using the letters and numbers and caught the bus back to school. Everyone was very sensible when the bus we should have been catching didn’t run and we had to wait for the next bus.

Everyone was very excited on the way back because it was a double decker bus and Miss Parker let us sit upstairs. We wondered if we would fit under the bridge but thankfully we did!

The excitement wasn’t over then though. When we got back to school there were lots and lots of fire engines outside school! Thankfully the firefighters were only practising in the old school building and there was no real fire. It meant we got to have a really good look at them as we walked past.

Well done Onyx Class! You were superstars all morning and made it a wonderful visit. I’m sure Onyx Dog is looking forward to coming to all your houses for a visit soon. Also a HUGE thank you to all the parents who came with us, we couldn’t go on our visits without you!
