How Do You Help A Dinosaur?

We had a special visitor to our classroom before the Easter holidays. We kept finding footprints in our classroom and the children were quick to say what they thought they were. We had a look around our classroom to see if we could work out what it was.

 

Miss Parker decided to set up a special camera when we all went home to see if we could find out what had been to our classroom. You won’t believe what it was, we caught a dinosaur on camera!!!! It had been right through our classroom!

 

That wasn’t the end of it though. The dinosaur came back the next day and and we saw it on the camera again walking around the other end of our classroom.

 

We couldn’t believe our eyes, especially as this time he had brought us a box. We had to read it. It said,

It was from the dinosaur and he wanted our help. We had to read the letter he had sent us so we knew what to do.

Then there was another reading job to do as we matched the information to the correct dinosaur name. We then made our information into a book for Mr T Rex so he didn’t feel so muddled. He sent us another letter to read which said Thank you.

We loved having a dinosaur come and visit us in school although I think a few of us were glad that we didn’t actually come face to face with a T Rex!

What we have been learning? 

  • to read simple texts with a purpose. 
  • to learn more information about the dinosaurs. 
  • to imagine what it would be like to have a dinosaur in our classroom! 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • read everyday with your child. Even if it is a more difficult text they can help you read it by saying the sounds they know and looking for tricky words such as I, go, no, the, to, into, me, my, be, she etc. 
  • find out some more information about dinosaurs using books and the internet. You can visit the Library and look for books about dinosaurs. Turn the information you find into your own book. 
  • imagine what it would be like to have a dinosaur in your house! Can you draw a picture of what might happen?

A School Library Visit

We are very lucky at Prince Edward Primary School as, not only do we get to go to Manor Top Library, we also have our very own Library in school! Onyx class visited this week to find a book they would like to take home. Everyone loved the library and it was interesting for the teachers to see which books interested the children the most. The ‘Oi’ books were very popular (Oi Frog, Oi Dog and Oi Cat) as were the non-fiction books. Particular favourites were the car and motorbike books and also the books about castles and knights. Maybe these will be the themes the children choose to learn about next…

First we had a good look at all the books and found our favourites.

When we’d found our favourite we got to take it Miss Parker who helped us to issue it just like at Manor Top Library. We loved it when the computer knew which book we wanted to borrow and when our special number told the computer our names.

Please make sure you return your child’s library book to school. We will be going to the school library regularly now and only children who have brought their book back will be able to take a new book home. Please look inside the book for the date it needs to be returned by.

It is really important all books are returned so that everyone can continue to enjoy them. You may be asked to pay for books which are not returned and your child will no longer be allowed to take books home.

Y1 Investigators- Download the Y1 Transition Book

After we’d been busy making our special transition book for the Nursery Kids (see post here) we decided that we wanted to find out more about Y1 and make a book for ourselves. We’d already been on one visit so had some ideas but there were other things we weren’t sure about, like assembly and dinner bands.

We thought of what we wanted to know and then sent some investigators to Y1 to find out. It was also another chance to have a sneaky look at our new classrooms and see our new teachers.

Red Nose Day 2017

This Friday it was Red Nose Day. Everyone was very excited to come to school dressed in red and to bring their red noses to school. Miss Parker bought a nose earlier on in the week but waited until Friday to open it. We were all excited to find out which one it was. Can you see which noses these children have? Can you remember which one Miss Parker had?

We enjoyed different activities on the day including going on the Comic Relief game. You can play at home on Comic Adventure. We also sorted all the coins which had been sent in as donations and what charity meant. Once we knew how much money we had we wanted to know where it would be going.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who donated. As you can see on the day alone- not including all the money which was sent to school for red noses- Onyx class raised £12.20! Well done everyone!

This Week’s Awards- Spring 2 Week 3

Our Mathematician of the week was spotted over in the coffee tray this week. We’re all really proud of how confident she is getting and how much more she shares her ideas.

Our Mondrian Art

We had an art lesson last week where we looked at the work of Piet Mondrian. He made pictures using black lines and the primary colours of red, blue and yellow.  We looked at lots of examples and then had a go at making some of our own in our Sketch Books. Once we’d had a go we looked again and used Critique to improve our own work. You can find out more about Critique on our school website.

What have we been learning? 

  • To look at and talk about the work of a famous artist. 
  • To recreate the art of famous artists. 
  • To talk about what we are doing and about how we can improve our own work. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Search on the internet for Piet Mondrain and see what you can find out about him- remember to only do internet searches with your grown ups help. 
  • Choose some different colours and see if you can make your own pictures at home. 
  • Look for the Primary colours and see where you can see them. 
  • Find out what happens when you mix the Primary colours together.

Day 100!!!!!

We have been counting to Day 100 since we first started full time school way back in September. Can you remember our first days at school? Have a look at the blog post from when we started school. Click here to see it. We’ve all done a lot of growing since then and have got a lot cleverer!

We have been putting a straw in our pockets every day since then and marking it off on the hundred square. You can see when we first started on one of our first ever Mathematician of the Week blog post. Click here to see it.

Everyone was very excited that the day had finally come. We’d been planning our promised party for a couple of weeks now!

We did have to do some counting though. We found the easiest ways to count to 100 was to count to ten ten times. Can you see the different ways we have counted in this way?

Some children even measured the KS2 corridor using their steps. They had to predict if they thought there would be 100 steps from the Studio all the way to Miss French’s Office at the other end.

When we found out the steps gave us different measurements we learnt about a metre stick which turned out to have 100 centimetres on it. We’d found another 100! Children had to find objects which were longer or shorter than a metre and record them in their book.

We’d been busy during the week getting ready. Jayden thought we need decorations so got busy making some in the Workshop. We also made some special Day 100 Crowns which meant we had to do lots of counting.

 

When it got to Wednesday it was time for our party 🙂

Miss Bibby came through from Nursery with a surprise for us. The Nursery kids had been making pizza for their Pizza Day and sent some through for us to have at our party. You can see more about their Pizza Day here.  Thanks Nursery, we thought your pizza was yummy!

We’d thought about the other things we wanted for our party and decided that it couldn’t be a proper party without a chocolate cake and musical statues!

There was one last job to do… we needed to say well done to the rest of the school for their 100 days in school this year. We went to visit every classroom and took them a certificate. They were the same certificates that we got one of each to say well done to us!

What fabulous Day 100! Now we’re interested to know if we will get Day 100.

Don’t forget your Day 100 Homework to bring a collection of 100 items from home. We’ll be putting them on the wall in the classroom for everyone to see. 

What have we been learning? 

  • To count to ten confidently and count out that many objects. 
  • To count in tens to 100 and know what this looks like. 
  • To complete challenges and answer questions. 
  • To measure in different ways and think about which is best. 
  • To think about ourselves as old people and talk about what we might be able to do. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Try some of the activities at home like counting pennies in towers or throwing the dice. 
  • Count out objects in your home, for example, how many stairs are there on the way to bed? 
  • Count the days until you do something important, like go on holiday, a special visit or until your child’s birthday.
