Environment and Global Citizenship Weeks

Before the Spring Bank break it was Environment Week in school closely followed by Global Citizenship Week. We decided to base our learning for Environment Week around the film Wall-E. Look at our Floor Book to see what we learnt about.

The week after was Global Citizenship Week. We based our learning around the TASC wheel and tried to answer the question:

Where is the best place to live in the world? 

It was hard to decide because there are so many exciting places we could have chosen. We had to know enough about the place chose to explain why we’d live there and also why it was better than anywhere else. First we asked our parents/ carers if we had any family who lived in another place or if we’d ever been to any other places. This helped make our discussions more relevant to us.

What we have been learning? 

  • About our place in the world. 
  • About how we can help the world stay a nice place to live.
  • About different countries around the world. 
  • How we have links around the world even if we’ve never been before. 
  • What we know about different countries around the world. 
  • How we can use what we know to help us answer a question. 

How can you continue the learning at home?

  • Talk to your child about any links they have around the world. 
  • Let your child help you recycle into the different bins you have at home. 
  • Talk to your child about keeping their bedroom tidy to help keep your home environment nice.

Chocolatey Easter Baking

For Global Citizenship Week we refreshed our learning about Fairtrade from earlier in the year. We learnt about how chocolate gets to us from the plants in Africa. Did you know chocolate comes from a plant? 

We decided that we wanted to make something with our chocolate and because it was also nearly Easter decided to make Chocolate Easter Buns. We had to safely melt the chocolate watching carefully to observe what happens. There was lots of talk about what we could see and also smell! It smelt yummy.

We helped to make the buns following the recipe and weighing out the ingredients. We also had to count out the eggs for the top to make sure there was an equal number on each on.

What have we been learning? 

  • where our food comes from in the world. 
  • which food is Fairtrade and what this means. 
  • where our favourite chocolate comes from and how it gets to us in Sheffield. 
  • what different chocolate tastes like and how we can use different and interesting words to talk about it. 
  • about what happens to chocolate when it gets hot and melts. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • look at different foods at home and in the supermarket to see where it comes from. 
  • talk about the taste of foods using as many different words as possible. Examples are:  sweet, sour, salty, spicy, chewy, soft, crunchy, fizzy, fruity, gooey, mushy, icy, cold, hot. 
  •  look for other foods which melt when they get hot and talk about what happens when it cools down again.

Our Fabulous Chocolatey Fairtrade Week

It was Global Citizenship Week in school before the Easter holidays. We were given the theme of Fair-trade and after talking about it we decided we’d like to learn more about Fair-trade CHOCOLATE!

We received a special delivery from George along with a copy of his book.

It prompted us to think about which of our foods were Fair-trade and where the food we eat comes from. We were particularly interested in where Grace’s favourite Kinder Eggs came from. At first everyone said Lidl and Adsa but we learnt they came from much further away than that. You can see what everyone said on our Floor Book pages…

We had a chocolate tasting session where everyone tasted the chocolate, even the ones they weren’t so sure about, and thought about how it tasted. We had to try and think of as many different words to describe the taste as we could. We weren’t allowed to just say “nice”.

Then we had to decide which as our favourite and vote for it on the chart. We turned the chart into a bar chart. Can you see which was our favourite? Which chocolate was nobody’s favourite?

We did some more maths thinking about the Kinder Eggs that we’d been thinking about. We had to think about which part of the Kinder Egg was our favourite and recorded our findings in a different way using a Venn diagram. Can you see which part of the Kinder Egg we liked best?

Finally we used the chocolate we had to make some Chocolate Easter Nests but we weren’t allowed to eat them! We used them to sell to the teachers in school to raise money for Sport Relief on the Friday of the week. Along with Diamond class (Nursery) and Garnet class (FS2) we raised just over £80 to go in the school’s Sport Relief donation. Well done everyone!
