Our Trip to Build a Bear Workshop

We had a wonderful visit to Build A Bear Workshop on January 31st. We did lots of talking about our visit and reflected on what we had seen and learnt when we got back. This has been turned into a Learning Story which you can see both in the classroom and below. We’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

After the February half term Charlie will start to come and visit the children at home. Please make sure you look after Charlie and bring him back to school. We’d love for you to complete the special diary so we can share your child’s experiences with the whole class. We encourage the children to write in the diary themselves rather than have you do it for them. Look out for Charlie coming to a house near you soon!

A huge thank you to the Parents/Carers who came with us on our visit. Without you we wouldn’t be able to take the children on these important visits.

How you can continue the learning at home? 

  • Go on visits to other places in Sheffield.  Talk about how they are the same as Manor Top and Meadowhall and how they are different.  
  • Go on visits on public transport, such as the bus or tram, and allow your child to help paying for tickets. It will help them understand money and how the different coins work. 
  • Allow your child to take small risks (with your close supervision) such as going on escalators. It will help them develop their self confidence and ability to manage their own safety. 

You can send us pictures of your visits or complete a wow moment in class.

Cake Cake Cake!

What a week we had last week! The children had been talking a lot about cake. It has been a few children’s birthdays in Onyx class and some of them had brought cake to celebrate. Then it was a different child’s birthday and they didn’t bring a cake so we discussed how cake wasn’t just for birthdays and you didn’t ALWAYS get cake on someone’s birthday. We had also been talking about cake when we’d done learning about The Highway Rat the week before.

The children decided they wanted to make cake which the teachers agreed was a great idea. However, if we wanted to make cake there were a few things we needed to do first.

The very first thing we needed to do was write a list of ingredients that we would need. For this we had to find a recipe and find out what we needed. Once we had a list we asked some children to go to the shop and buy the ingredients. Before they went we talked about money and made sure they would be able to pay for the ingredients.

Once we’d got out ingredients we used our recipe to make the cake mixture. We used a special recipe which we can do ourselves where we had to balance all the ingredients with an egg. We decided we wanted to add different colours and different flavours as well.

Then we had to ask the grown ups to help us put the mixture in the oven so it could bake. We knew that we would have to wait for it to cool down and then we decorated our cake as well. Once our cake was ready we had another job to do. We only had one cake and 29 children so we had to share the cake. Miss Parker helped us by cutting the cake in half and then we kept cutting it in half until we had 8 pieces of cake. Look how yummy our cake looks…..

IMG_9871That still wasn’t enough pieces so Miss Parker made sure there were enough pieces cut from each of the 8 letting everyone have a piece.

We were excited to taste our cake. Jacob said, “Thats the besest cake I’ve ever seen!

Everyone tried the cake and most of use agreed it tasted lovely. Some of the layers tasted of peppermint and some tasted of orange!!! We were all talking about which was our favourite bit of the cake and which bits we didn’t like as much. We decided to find out which was our favourite part. We had to remember all the different parts of the cake and then we came to put a tally next to our favourite. There was a clear winner!

We didn’t just make a cake for ourselves. We knew the birds were outside and in the cold weather they needed to find lots of food to help keep them warm. We decided to make cake for the birds as well. It was very different to ours and we decided that we wouldn’t swap! We’ve hung it up in our outdoor area and are hoping the birds come to eat some soon.

We had such a fabulous week making cake and loved being involved in every part of the cake making from writing lists, counting money, going to the shop,  measuring, baking, sharing and finally to eating the cake.

How to continue the learning at home? 

  • Follow simple recipes at home to make cakes and other treats. 
  • Allow your child to pay in the shop and talk about the different coins. 
  • Share other food types at home, such as biscuits or cake between family members.

Your child will be learning maths and so much more without even knowing!

Yum, Yum, Christmas Dinner

It was our Christmas Dinner today. Nearly everybody in the class tried a school dinner which was great to see. We have to try hard to use our knife and fork even when it gets a bit tricky.

We even had some special visitors come and join us for Christmas Dinner. The PCSOs came to catch up with us and enjoy their dinner as well. You might even spot Miss Parker’s mum as well who came to share the occasion with us.

We all agreed that our dinner was delicious and now those of us who celebrate Christmas are really looking forward to Christmas dinner at our homes over Christmas.

What we have been learning? 

  • To use a knife and fork.
  • To try new foods. 
  • To talk to members of our community. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Encourage your child to use their knife and fork when they eat at home. 
  • Encourage your child to try a range of foods at home and to eat school dinners each day.

Our First Visit to the Library

This week we had our first visit to Manor Top Library. We had to leave school and walk with our partner across all the busy roads to get there. Everyone was very sensible and walked safely to the Library. Miss Parker was very impressed.

 

When we got to the Library we got to have a look at all the books they have there. It was great to look at some new books including some we don’t have in school. We really enjoyed looking at the books and listening to our grown ups tell us the stories.

We will go to the Library every fortnight on a Monday in the afternoon. We will be able to start taking books home next time we go if your child has returned their Library Card form or you’ve already given us their Library Card.

We will also need parents/careers to come with us so look out for the sign up sheet in the classroom. We can take as many parents/careers as want to come but we do ask that you leave younger children at home.

Careers Week

Last week in school was Careers Week. We had lots of special visitors to our classroom over the week. Can you remember who came? 

First we had a visit from the PCSOs (Police). They came to have a play in the classroom and see what we do in Foundation Stage Two. It was fun to be able to play with all the toys in Onyx classroom together. Then we talked to them and they told us all about being in the Police and how you get to be in the Police. Some of us want to be in the Police when we are older.

Then Miss Parker’s mum came to visit us. We are used to seeing her in the School Library but not in our classroom. She came to tell us all about when she was a Librarian at the University. Did you know librarians have to go to Library School? They also have to read a LOT of books. If you love books maybe you could be a Librarian one day.

Finally Miah’s mum came to visit us and tell us about her job in a Care Home. She has to work very hard and told us all about the different jobs she has to do to help keep the old people happy and safe. She came to see us in her special uniform so we could see it.

A huge thank you to everyone who came to talk to us about their job. What would you like to do when you grow up? Maybe you could draw a picture and bring it to show Miss Parker in class.

A Visit from the Ambulance

We had a special visitor on the Monday of Safety Week. Don from the Ambulance service came to see everyone in FS and KS1. First of all he talked to us in the Hall. We found out about his job and how he keeps people safe. Then we got to see his special uniform and some children got to try it on.

After that we went outside to see the ambulance. Some of us were a bit worried about going in the ambulance because we’d never been in one before but everyone had a turn. We thought of some questions to ask Don like, ‘How does the ambulance know where to go?’ and ‘Why is there a snake on the ambulance badge?’ Can you remember what Don told us?

We also had a good look around the outside of the ambulance. Don put the lights on and the siren. It was really loud. Can you remember why is has to be really loud?

It was great having Don in school and we hope he can come again sometime.

A Visit to Build A Bear Workshop Visit

We had a wonderful time last week when we visited Build a Bear Workshop at Meadowhall. We had to walk to the bus stop and catch the number 18 bus. We saw lots of interesting things out of the window on the way.

Once we got to Meadowhall Bus Interchange then we had to walk to find Build a Bear Workshop. We had to go across roads, go up steps, go over bridges, go down escalators and walk past all the shops. It was a great opportunity to use some of the position words we’ve been learning in Maths this week and last. It also gave us a good opportunity to practise our reading and work out what it said on the floor. Can you read it to a grown up now? 

Corey also managed to spot a volcano! Can you see it? This was good because Mateo had been asking when we were going on our Volcano Hunt.

We made it to Build a Bear Workshop 🙂

Once we got to Build a Bear Workshop we had the serious business to attend to and a bear to choose! We had three bears to choose from… can you remember which one you wanted? 

Everyone helped to fill our bear with fluff by pressing the pedal with our foot. We worked together with our friend.

Then we had to make a wish to put in our bear and also blow lots of kisses with fill our new friend with love. Then they were tied at the back so nothing fell back out.

After that we had to choose a name for our bear; we choose Onyx Dog when we talked about it. The last thing we had to do was get Onyx Dog some clothes so she can come to all our houses and school. While the grown ups had a look for some clothes for us to choose from we all had a hug with Onyx Dog and said hello for the first time.

Then we were ready to go back to school so we had to go and find the Bus Interchange again. We found the right bus stop using the letters and numbers and caught the bus back to school. Everyone was very sensible when the bus we should have been catching didn’t run and we had to wait for the next bus.

Everyone was very excited on the way back because it was a double decker bus and Miss Parker let us sit upstairs. We wondered if we would fit under the bridge but thankfully we did!

The excitement wasn’t over then though. When we got back to school there were lots and lots of fire engines outside school! Thankfully the firefighters were only practising in the old school building and there was no real fire. It meant we got to have a really good look at them as we walked past.

Well done Onyx Class! You were superstars all morning and made it a wonderful visit. I’m sure Onyx Dog is looking forward to coming to all your houses for a visit soon. Also a HUGE thank you to all the parents who came with us, we couldn’t go on our visits without you!
