Healthy Living Week 2018

Before October Half Term we all took part in the whole school Healthy Living Week. We learnt about lots of different ways to keep ourselves safe and healthy.

First Mrs Murch came to talk to us about PANTS and our new friend Pantosaurus. It is important that we learn the special PANTS rules so we know how to keep ourselves safe.

There was a special rule to remember for each of the letters in PANTS.We had to remember Privates are private.

After that we had a doctor come to visit us and tell us all about staying healthy but also what happens if we need to go to the doctors.

We all had such a good time we decided we wanted a Doctors’ Surgery in our classroom and asked the teachers to turn our role play into a Doctors. We have loved pretending to be the doctors and the patients.

 

Another day we had a special PE session with Erol. It was hard work as we tried all the activities and kept our bodies fit and healthy.

We were very lucky because we were able to borrow some special bikes from Taylor Shaw. They were called Smoothie Bikes because when you pedalled them you made the blender turn. We got to use them a couple of times. First, when we made pumpkin soup with the pumpkins we’d been growing and, second, when we made smoothies with fruit and yoghurt.

Which was your favourite? Can you say why? 

We did some other different food tasting as well to try new and healthy foods.

Some children weren’t to sure to begin with about trying new foods but they surprised themselves when they did try them.

We also had a very different type of PE session than the one with Errol. In this one we did some Yoga and learnt to keep our bodies steady and still. It took a lot of concentration but we got really good at it and wanted to practise for the rest of the day.

We also read a book called UNPLUGGED which taught us about the importance of spending time outside and not always being inside on the computer- even if its our favourite thing to do! We learnt that being safe and healthy online means it is good to be away from the computer.

  • Encourage your children to try new foods. Make it exciting and let them help you prepare them before you try them. 
  • Walk to school everyday and talk about why walking is the healthy option (or running, riding a bike or coming on your scooter)

A Trip to the Building Site

You may have noticed they are building some houses near to our school. We got the opportunity to go and have a closer look and to meet some of the builders.

First there was a Workshop session with parents and carers in the Hall. Jordan from Engie came to talk to us and share some information about house building. There was then a special building activity to do with real mini bricks. We had to work together to make a tiny house.

Then we split up into 4 groups with Garnet class and went to see the Building Site. The builders came to meet us at school and brought special hard hats and high vis vests for us to wear just like the real builders. We walked around the edge of the site looking at the houses that were being built. There was lots of discussion about keeping safe near building sites and also why we had the special clothing on to help keep us safe when we visited.

We saw detached houses and semi- detached houses. We loved looking at the big diggers. We saw builders whose job was to put the bricks on the house and other builders who dug the big holes. We found out about the different colour hats that the builders were wearing and lots more.

We followed the visit with some learning about the story of the Three Little Pigs. It was a story the children were familiar with that they mentioned when we were talking about building in our Floor Book session. We even got a letter from the Three Pigs asking for our help to build a strong house after the disaster they had. We tried to build houses in lots of different ways.  We even tested them with the hairdryer pretending to be the Big Bad Wolf!

We have loved learning about houses and how they are built. A huge thank you to everyone at Engie who made it possible and also the parents and carers who came with us so we could take the children on the walks. We couldn’t have done it without you 🙂

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Comment on the building site when you are bringing your child or taking them home from school- what has changed? What are they building now? What do you think will happen next? 
  • Talk about the job that builders do and other jobs which the children are interested in. 
  • Reinforce comments about the children staying safe and why it is important.

Grandparents’ Afternoon Tea

We really appreciate the role grandparents have in the lives of the children in our school. This is why we decided to celebrate Grandparents’ Day again this year with an Afternoon Tea. All grandparents in Foundation Stage and Key Stage one were invited and there was a great uptake. We had a very busy Hall full of children loving some special time with their grandparents. Everyone got to enjoy the special biscuits which the children had prepared while they played the games together.

A huge thank you to everyone who came and made it such a great event 🙂

Sports Day 2018

We had a fabulous time at Sports Day. We were able to go up on the field for the first time and it is another wonderful space we get to enjoy at our school. We joined up with Key Stage One and our families were invited to join in the fun.

After we’d had a turn we let our grown ups have a go at racing. There was a Mummies, Nannans and other girls race then a Daddies, Grandads and other boys race. The teachers had a turn as well! We were very proud when Miss Deakin was the winner 🙂

Once all the races and activities were finished  we found out which team was the winners with the most points. Each team had children from ever class so these are the winners from Onyx Class. Everyone else got a certificate to say well done for taking part.

Safety Week 2018

It was Safety Week in school recently. We use the TASC wheel in school so we decided this would be a good week to introduce it to FS2.

We asked the children what they knew about safety and they started to talk about Road Safety. We’d started talking about this on our visit to Build a Bear Workshop and some of the children remembered what we said. We also talked about it more on our visit to the Library.

We asked the children how they wanted to represent their thinking about road safety and how they were going to teach some of the other children what they were learning. There were lots of fabulous ideas, from making cars to traffic light costumes, to making a road safety video. You can see a couple of them here…

We also had a visit from some Y3 children who had been on Road Safety sessions. They came to tell us what they had been learning.

We had such a great week and the children really surprised us with their amazing ideas using the TASC wheel. We can’t wait to do another TASC project soon.

Our Trip to Build a Bear Workshop

We had a wonderful visit to Build A Bear Workshop on January 31st. We did lots of talking about our visit and reflected on what we had seen and learnt when we got back. This has been turned into a Learning Story which you can see both in the classroom and below. We’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

After the February half term Charlie will start to come and visit the children at home. Please make sure you look after Charlie and bring him back to school. We’d love for you to complete the special diary so we can share your child’s experiences with the whole class. We encourage the children to write in the diary themselves rather than have you do it for them. Look out for Charlie coming to a house near you soon!

A huge thank you to the Parents/Carers who came with us on our visit. Without you we wouldn’t be able to take the children on these important visits.

How you can continue the learning at home? 

  • Go on visits to other places in Sheffield.  Talk about how they are the same as Manor Top and Meadowhall and how they are different.  
  • Go on visits on public transport, such as the bus or tram, and allow your child to help paying for tickets. It will help them understand money and how the different coins work. 
  • Allow your child to take small risks (with your close supervision) such as going on escalators. It will help them develop their self confidence and ability to manage their own safety.

Cake Cake Cake!

What a week we had last week! The children had been talking a lot about cake. It has been a few children’s birthdays in Onyx class and some of them had brought cake to celebrate. Then it was a different child’s birthday and they didn’t bring a cake so we discussed how cake wasn’t just for birthdays and you didn’t ALWAYS get cake on someone’s birthday. We had also been talking about cake when we’d done learning about The Highway Rat the week before.

The children decided they wanted to make cake which the teachers agreed was a great idea. However, if we wanted to make cake there were a few things we needed to do first.

The very first thing we needed to do was write a list of ingredients that we would need. For this we had to find a recipe and find out what we needed. Once we had a list we asked some children to go to the shop and buy the ingredients. Before they went we talked about money and made sure they would be able to pay for the ingredients.

Once we’d got out ingredients we used our recipe to make the cake mixture. We used a special recipe which we can do ourselves where we had to balance all the ingredients with an egg. We decided we wanted to add different colours and different flavours as well.

Then we had to ask the grown ups to help us put the mixture in the oven so it could bake. We knew that we would have to wait for it to cool down and then we decorated our cake as well. Once our cake was ready we had another job to do. We only had one cake and 29 children so we had to share the cake. Miss Parker helped us by cutting the cake in half and then we kept cutting it in half until we had 8 pieces of cake. Look how yummy our cake looks…..

IMG_9871That still wasn’t enough pieces so Miss Parker made sure there were enough pieces cut from each of the 8 letting everyone have a piece.

We were excited to taste our cake. Jacob said, “Thats the besest cake I’ve ever seen!

Everyone tried the cake and most of use agreed it tasted lovely. Some of the layers tasted of peppermint and some tasted of orange!!! We were all talking about which was our favourite bit of the cake and which bits we didn’t like as much. We decided to find out which was our favourite part. We had to remember all the different parts of the cake and then we came to put a tally next to our favourite. There was a clear winner!

We didn’t just make a cake for ourselves. We knew the birds were outside and in the cold weather they needed to find lots of food to help keep them warm. We decided to make cake for the birds as well. It was very different to ours and we decided that we wouldn’t swap! We’ve hung it up in our outdoor area and are hoping the birds come to eat some soon.

We had such a fabulous week making cake and loved being involved in every part of the cake making from writing lists, counting money, going to the shop,  measuring, baking, sharing and finally to eating the cake.

How to continue the learning at home? 

  • Follow simple recipes at home to make cakes and other treats. 
  • Allow your child to pay in the shop and talk about the different coins. 
  • Share other food types at home, such as biscuits or cake between family members.

Your child will be learning maths and so much more without even knowing!
