Zooming Zog and Friends

We were all very excited when we came back to school after Christmas because we’d seen Zog on the television during the holidays. We began to talk about Zog and what we knew about him. We read the book again and watched the animation. Everyone loved Zog so much we decided to try and learn the story for ourselves. Miss Parker helped us make a story map which helped us remember what came next. We also made sure we remembered to use the repeating text, “Now that you’ve been shown, you can practise on your own”. Can you remember the words and tell your grown up?

When we were outside some of us had a go at learning to fly like Zog had done. It was a little bit risky but we talked about how to keep ourselves safe and look after our friends.

Some children also helped Zog out by helping him free animals, people and other objects which had got frozen in the ice. We had to try and work out the best way to free the objects in the quickest way. Can you remember how to melt the ice quickly?

When we watched the animation of Zog we also talked about how some of the other Julia Donaldson books which we’d been reading had been turned into animations as well. the children loved reading the books and watching the animations.

When we were watching Stick Man we made an important discovery: the animations had been made by humans. Even though we were watching them on the computer a person had to make it first. We wondered whether we could be animators too. We found out that we could.

Miss Parker found a programme which meant we could be animators called 2Animate on Purple Mash. We collected some ideas about what our animations could look like and after trying some as a class we made some of our own looking at the books to check. We had to work together in teams to make sure our animation was a joint effort.

Parents/ carers- your child has now been given their own password to use Purple Mash at home. Can you remember how to make an animation and show your grown ups?

All week we had been reading more and more Julia Donaldson books. We couldn’t believe how many books she had written. Can you remember some of the other books that Julia Donaldson has written? There is a clue here! Have you read them all? Don’t forget to look in the library if you’ve not read them all.

You can also see what we found out and also how we found it out. Some of our questions were answered by reading Julia Donaldson A Biography, some them we asked Google and some of them we answered by asking Siri when some children suggested this as a possible way of finding out information. We did talk about making sure we stay safe when using the internet and Siri or Alexa.

We had such a good time learning about Zog and then animation and then Julia Donaldson. Miss Parker and the teachers loved seeing the children’s ideas flow from one week to the next developing into the next focus. The following week we asked if Julia Donaldson was the only author and started to look at different authors whose books we might like. The children keep returning to Julia Donaldson though- she really is a favourite 🙂

The teachers were all really impressed by the children’s writing in the Floor Book and how their confidence is growing all the time at writing more independently. Well done everyone!

Celebrating Eid

It was a very exciting weekend for some of the children in Onyx Class over the weekend of the 24/25th June because they celebrated Eid in their homes. They couldn’t wait to tell us all about it.

They wanted to show us the way that Muslims pray so came to the front and showed us.

We decided to get the prayer mats out so everyone could see them and they continued to show us how to pray the Muslim way. We found out in our information books that it is called Salah. It is one of the 5 Pillars of Islam and Muslims must pray 5 times a day.

We also found some books written in Arabic writing and learnt that in Arabic you read the writing right to left not like in English which is left to right. We already know some Arabic from when we do our register in different languages but we learnt how to say Happy Eid as well.

We were very lucky because one of our families brought us in some Eid treats to try. Can you remember which one you tried?

We also read lots of books from our school library about Ramadan, Islam and Eid. Some of them were non-fiction books, some of them were fiction like this one. They all taught us all more about Eid though. We also watched the CBeebies programme Let’s Celebrate to find out what else happens at Eid. Click here to find the clips we watched.

While we talked about Eid and Islam we also talked about some of the other children’s experiences of religion. We found out some children prayed in different ways and went to Church instead of Mosque.

What have we been learning? 

  • About celebrations that are important to children in our class. 
  • That different people celebrate different religious events and festivals to us. 
  • What happens at Eid and some of the ways which Muslims practice their religion. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Talk to your child about the celebrations which are important in your family. 
  • Look for different religious buildings in Sheffield, such as churches and mosques. 
  • Use books from the library to find out more about different celebrations.

Welcome to Foundation Stage- Reception (FS2)- Download our Book

The children have been working hard to produce a book for our nursery children and all the children coming to join our school from other nurseries. We have been talking about how we felt when we were in our nurseries and it was time for us to start full time school.

We decided that we would write our own book which we could send to the nursery kids which would help them know what to expect. First we had to decide what was important to tell them about. We also went to nursery and asked the children what they wanted to know. Then we had to take the photos, which we mostly took ourselves on the iPad. We even asked our parents/ carers what they thought the new FS2 parents/ carers would like to know. Once we had done that Miss Parker helped us to use an App called Book Creator to turn it into a book on the iPad.

When it was complete we went to Nursery to share it with the kids there. We even shared it with some kids who came to our classroom for an extra visit.

Some of the comments from our parents/ carers were handed in after we’d made our book but they were so good we wanted to share them with you anyway…

“I would say it is normal to feel nervous and worried. Its such a big step and the start of a very long journey but you will soon be so full of pride and they learn something new literally everyday. Its gone so fast (the year) and they are in great hands”

“Children moving up from Nursery is one of the most scariest things ever. Me as a parent who does worry about everything, one thing I can say is trust what the teachers say and they will be fine. My child has changed so much for the better! I just need to say stay happy and excited even though deep down it scary. Good luck!”

A huge well done to Onyx Class 2016-7 for writing the book and thinking about what was important for their nursery friends to know.

We recommend that you look at the book together, either on a computer or tablet or you can print a copy and keep it at home. The more familiar your child is with the pictures and names of everything the more secure they will feel when they start school in September.

Miss Hulme will continue to share the book with the children in Prince Edward Nursery and we will be making this link known to all the other nurseries we are expecting children to come to us from.

Caterpillars Caterpillars (Part 2)

You’ll not believe how much our caterpillars have grown!!! Look at them now….

We’ve been doing lots of learning all about The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The children are  now really good at telling the whole story using the story map. Have a go at telling the story together at home.

We’ve also been learning to answer questions we have asked about caterpillars and butterflies. When we were reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar Jayden asked where the egg came from. We all had a few ideas but we decided to find out. We used non-fiction (information) books to find out the answers. Lots of the children had the right idea about what happened and where the egg came from but needed a little practise to be able to explain it in a sentence.  Can you remember something else you found out from reading the books?

We were all able to show we could answer Jayden’s question in the form of a life cycle. Can you explain the life cycle and what happens? 

There was a song Miss Parker knew which helped us to remember what happened. It is from the Music Express books and is sung to the tune of ‘She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain’. Can you sing the song and remember the actions? 

There’s a tiny caterpillar on a leaf (wiggle, wiggle), There’s a tiny caterpillar on a leaf (wiggle, wiggle), There’s a tiny caterpillar, tiny caterpillar, tiny caterpillar on a leaf (wiggle, wiggle). 

He will eat the leaves around him ’til he’s full (munch, munch), He will……… (repeat)

A cocoon is what he’s spinning for his home (spin, spin), A cocoon is……… (repeat)

Then he’ll be a butterfly and fly away (flap, flap), Then he’ll (repeat)

By the end of the week we’d learnt so much that we were able to write class sentences to explain what we’d learnt. We did some shared writing altogether with Mrs Murch helping us. Can you read the writing that we did together?

We were trying to predict when we thought the caterpillars would spin their cocoons. Some children thought it would be by Monday morning, some children thought it might take a bit longer. Everyone is excited for when we get the butterflies. Keep checking back to see when that happens…..
