Its hard to believe we’ve been in school since September. Look at our happy faces on our first day
We’ve been so busy settling in and learning so much already. You can see what we’ve been learning about in our Floor Book in the classroom. Just ask to see it in the mornings in school.
Themes we’ve already learnt about include the Gingerbread Man, Conkers, Acorns and Leaves and Pumpkins. Ask your child which was their favourite.
Miss Parker, Miss Deakin and all the other teachers already know what a special year we’re going to have and can’t wait to share it with you on our blog. Keep checking back to see what we’ve been up to.
After we’d been busy making our special transition book for the Nursery Kids (see post here) we decided that we wanted to find out more about Y1 and make a book for ourselves. We’d already been on one visit so had some ideas but there were other things we weren’t sure about, like assembly and dinner bands.
We thought of what we wanted to know and then sent some investigators to Y1 to find out. It was also another chance to have a sneaky look at our new classrooms and see our new teachers.

We are really going to miss the children in Onyx Class next year as they move up to Year one but we know they are going to be superstars! Make sure you pop back and let us know how you’re getting on everyone 🙂
We’ve had a few children talking about the dancing they do out of school recently. They’ve been really brave and have been doing demonstrations for the rest of the class.
We decided to watch a video of some people dancing. Miss Parker showed us some Ballet danced by professional ballet dancers. We were memorised and watched it without a sound or any movement. Some of us said we didn’t think grown ups could get their legs that high and some of us were surprised to see boys as well as girls dancing. We watched another clip later in the day and compared to two.
We asked Miss Oades to help us the next time she was in class as she used to do lots of dance when she was younger. We made our PE session a dance session and used lots of different types of music to see how we danced differently to different music.

We found it really interesting finding out about different types of dance. Well done to the girls who shared their home experiences of dance which led to everyone finding out more about different types of dance.
We had a special treat last week when Monsieur Bartholomew came to teach us some French. Usually he only works with the kids in Key Stage Two but when they had French Day it got some of us talking. Our big brothers and sisters were talking about it and what they were doing. We talked about the French that we already knew- did you know some of us can count to ten in French?– and looked for books about France in the school library. Miss Parker thought we’d enjoy a session with Monsieur Bartholomew and thankfully he could fit one in 🙂
During our session we talked about where France is and looked on the map. We also learnt how to say Hello- Bonjour and How are you?- Ca va? We then learnt how to reply, I’m good- Ca va bien. After that we read the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar which we already know very well. We’d never heard it in French before though!
Everyone loved listening to and learning some more French 🙂
It was a very exciting weekend for some of the children in Onyx Class over the weekend of the 24/25th June because they celebrated Eid in their homes. They couldn’t wait to tell us all about it.
They wanted to show us the way that Muslims pray so came to the front and showed us.
We decided to get the prayer mats out so everyone could see them and they continued to show us how to pray the Muslim way. We found out in our information books that it is called Salah. It is one of the 5 Pillars of Islam and Muslims must pray 5 times a day.
We also found some books written in Arabic writing and learnt that in Arabic you read the writing right to left not like in English which is left to right. We already know some Arabic from when we do our register in different languages but we learnt how to say Happy Eid as well.

Eid Mumbarak- Happy Eid
We were very lucky because one of our families brought us in some Eid treats to try. Can you remember which one you tried?
We also read lots of books from our school library about Ramadan, Islam and Eid. Some of them were non-fiction books, some of them were fiction like this one. They all taught us all more about Eid though. We also watched the CBeebies programme Let’s Celebrate to find out what else happens at Eid. Click here to find the clips we watched.
While we talked about Eid and Islam we also talked about some of the other children’s experiences of religion. We found out some children prayed in different ways and went to Church instead of Mosque.
What have we been learning?
- About celebrations that are important to children in our class.
- That different people celebrate different religious events and festivals to us.
- What happens at Eid and some of the ways which Muslims practice their religion.
How can you continue the learning at home?
- Talk to your child about the celebrations which are important in your family.
- Look for different religious buildings in Sheffield, such as churches and mosques.
- Use books from the library to find out more about different celebrations.
These two boys worked so hard this week together and we just couldn’t decide which one of them should get the Writer of the Week. We decided we had to give it to them both! They started off by drawing maps. They were asked about their maps and were able to talk all about them. They weren’t finished there, they made new maps and then were able to meet the challenge of writing the directions to follow the map. Both boys had phoneme tips to help them and tricky word bookmarks but using these resources are really developing their confidence to write independently. You can see where they are starting to remember digraphs in their writing such as ow and er.
Even once they’d drawn their maps and written their instructions they weren’t finished there. We got out the massive Ordnance Survey maps and they looked for new features to include on their maps. We can’t wait to see where they take us…
Our Mathematician of the Week was absent on Friday but that didn’t change the amazing work he’d done earlier in the week. He’d been trying to make amounts using a combination of 2p and 1p coins. He could count coins in 1p coins and count them in 2p coins but using the combination was proving tricky. He really persevered and used the Numicon to help him work it out. Well done Jayden- what a fabulous job!
Do you remember in Environment Week when we went to look at our allotment? Miss Parker decided we needed to learn about plants because lots of us got confused when looking at the roots, leaves and stems on the weeds and weren’t sure what to call them. We decided we would plant some seeds so we could watch them grow and talk about what we could see.
We were lucky in school to receive some tomato seeds from the National Schools Partnership.
We got busy planting making sure we had enough soil for the seeds and that we covered them up. Garnet class came to make sure everyone in Reception had one.
And then we had to wait…….
We are looking very carefully to see if we can see the stem and the leaves starting to grow. Can you see them? Why can’t you see the roots?
We’ll continue to watch them grow and talk about what we can see happening. How long do you think it will be before we see a tomato?
