This Week’s Awards- Summer 1 Week 4

What a fabulous job from our Mathematician this week. He amazed Miss Parker with his super maths skills which came from a self initiated problem he set himself. He was trying to make sure he had 8 of each of the colours. In talking about how many he had how many more he had when he found more and how many more he needed he showed he had really mastered the calculation skills needed to solve the problem. (He was handed the certificate by his friend who was in the role of teacher at this time.)

The Writer of the Week is another child who is now able to show us that everything we have learnt about writing all year is really starting to click and she is able is write her own sentences. Its been so amazing to see her confidence grow and grow.

Onyx Class Hairdressers

We had a new area formed in our classroom this week. The children asked if they could turn the house into a hairdressers! Of course we said yes but the children had some jobs to do first. They had to let us know what they thought the hairdressers would need to be the best hairdressers there had ever been.

The very first job was to tidy away all the resources we’d had out for the house.

With Miss Morris’ help the children made all the signs they would need including price lists and posters with opening times.

 

And then the children could get busy being hairdressers! This included some good receptionists as well to take the bookings and answer the phones.

Our hairdressers didn’t just do hair. There was a nail salon as well so the theme of colour mixing (from the dinosaur) was continued and the children who were interested had a to mix the colours they thought would make the best nail varnish colours. Some children decided to draw their best nail art designs in a booklet to show customers.

We had a great time in Onyx Class Hairdressers. Lots of children from Garnet class came to visit as well. We’ve never looked so good!

A Dinosaur in the Classroom!

We had a special visitor last week….. at first we only saw footprints and we didn’t know what had been in our classroom. Some of the children had an idea and started to investigate further. They found a dinosaur in a classroom and started to make links between the two.

It was a few days until we saw anything else but a few days later we noticed more footprint and the giant egg had hatched! This time there were two sets of footprints. Again we had a to get busy thinking what they could possibly be. There were dinosaurs in our giant egg which confirmed what we thought about it being a dinosaur.

We looked in books to see if we could find out more.

Some of us were a bit sceptical and thought there couldn’t have possibly been a real dinosaur in our classroom. Miss Parker set up a special camera in the classroom over night and the dinosaur came back!!! We got to see it on the iPad.

The dinosaur also left us a note and a present which was very exciting.

We decided that we wanted to paint our dinosaur but that gave us a problem.  Lots of people couldn’t remember how to make the right colour green that we needed to paint the dinosaur. We decided that we needed to refresh our knowledge of colour mixing before painting our dinosaur.

It was so exciting to have a real life dinosaur in our classroom and we hope he comes back again soon!

Caterpillars Caterpillars (Part 2)

You’ll not believe how much our caterpillars have grown!!! Look at them now….

We’ve been doing lots of learning all about The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The children are  now really good at telling the whole story using the story map. Have a go at telling the story together at home.

We’ve also been learning to answer questions we have asked about caterpillars and butterflies. When we were reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar Jayden asked where the egg came from. We all had a few ideas but we decided to find out. We used non-fiction (information) books to find out the answers. Lots of the children had the right idea about what happened and where the egg came from but needed a little practise to be able to explain it in a sentence.  Can you remember something else you found out from reading the books?

We were all able to show we could answer Jayden’s question in the form of a life cycle. Can you explain the life cycle and what happens? 

There was a song Miss Parker knew which helped us to remember what happened. It is from the Music Express books and is sung to the tune of ‘She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain’. Can you sing the song and remember the actions? 

There’s a tiny caterpillar on a leaf (wiggle, wiggle), There’s a tiny caterpillar on a leaf (wiggle, wiggle), There’s a tiny caterpillar, tiny caterpillar, tiny caterpillar on a leaf (wiggle, wiggle). 

He will eat the leaves around him ’til he’s full (munch, munch), He will……… (repeat)

A cocoon is what he’s spinning for his home (spin, spin), A cocoon is……… (repeat)

Then he’ll be a butterfly and fly away (flap, flap), Then he’ll (repeat)

By the end of the week we’d learnt so much that we were able to write class sentences to explain what we’d learnt. We did some shared writing altogether with Mrs Murch helping us. Can you read the writing that we did together?

We were trying to predict when we thought the caterpillars would spin their cocoons. Some children thought it would be by Monday morning, some children thought it might take a bit longer. Everyone is excited for when we get the butterflies. Keep checking back to see when that happens…..

This Week’s Awards- Summer 1 Week 2

It has been lovely to see our Writer of the Week’s confidence grow. She has gone from not being too sure about writing and rarely having a go in her independent writing to now loving being able to spell a wide range of words. When she did the writing in this example she was only too happy to tell me all about the digraphs she had used and even underlined them to show where they are. We’ve been doing lots of learning focussed on remembering the digraphs in Letters and Sounds sessions. Its great to see not only has she remembered them, she is able to use them in her own learning showing she is really mastering them.

We’ve been doing lots of learning about patterns this week linked to the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Our Mathematician of the Week remembered what we’d been talking about and was able to apply it to making patterns at the Painting Easel. She could confidently make a repeating pattern using two colours.

This Week’s Awards- Summer 1 Week 1

The children have come back to school full of life and ready to learn even more. Our writer of the week in particular has come back ready to write. We’ve not been able to stop her! She has chosen to draw pictures and write independently as well as write in her new Writing Journal (see upcoming post for more details). She is rightly very happy with herself and we’re all really happy to see the excellent effort she is putting in. 🙂

The Mathematician of the Week was spotted in the Water Tray this week. In fact, I bet if you asked him and his friends they wouldn’t have even known they were doing Maths. There was a lot of chat about how much water was in the containers and if that made it heavy or not.  Our Mathematician was using the correct vocabulary well and learning some new words with the help of his friends (half full). Great job, keep up the hard work 🙂

This Week’s Awards- Spring 2 Week 6

The last week of the Spring term was another busy but great week. Everyone worked so hard on their independent writing in their writing assessments that we had to give Writer of the Week to EVERYONE!!!! It wouldn’t have been fair to pick just one child or even a few. Everyone worked so hard and we are so proud of all the progress the children have made since September. We’ll be sharing all the Writing Assessments with parents/carers so if you’ve not seen your child’s yet look out for it in a morning. We really value your comments on how well you feel your child is doing and love to share their progress with you.

Mathematician of the Week was a tough choice this week as well but it was awarded to Faith. You can see here how she was making a ‘number cake’. The thought that went into it was amazing. She sorted the dice out making sure the correct numbers were displayed in each pot and then she started to count out the chicks so there were the correct amount in each section. She was constantly talking telling everyone what she was doing. It is lovely to see her so confident in her independent learning.
