This Week’s Awards- Spring 2 Week 3

Our Mathematician of the week was spotted over in the coffee tray this week. We’re all really proud of how confident she is getting and how much more she shares her ideas.

This Week’s Awards- Spring 2 Week 2

There are two more superstars this week ready to share their learning with everyone.

Our writer of the week has been growing in confidence all year and recently has started writing all the time! She is now writing sentences herself and remembering all the words. In this activity she wrote the first sentence all by herself which was amazing. We looked at it though with a sentence hand to see what she had missed. We then talked about writing the sentence with a sentence hand and I modelled it to show her. She was then able to rewrite the sentence using her finger for the finger spaces. She even changed one of the words. Three days later when she got her Writer of the Week pencil she could still remember what she’d written! Great job!

Our Mathematician of the Week found the same spot in the classroom to do her learning. She was writing calculations though. Look at her amazing learning.

Well done! We’ll keep working on that number orientation and making sure we record left to right.

This Week’s Awards- Spring 2 Week 1

Our Mathematician of the Week has come back to school with a bang this week! He has been so motivated, especially in Maths, but in all areas of his learning and we are all very proud of him. He was spotted all week doing different maths activities and is showing that he is much more confident to show us what he knows. Well done!

Our Writer of the Week used to be a bit reluctant to write and share her ideas. This week she wrote a whole story!!! She wrote the story of Frozen and using the story book was able to say what her story said and read it back. What a fantastic job! We can’t wait to see what she writes next.

This Week’s Awards- Spring 1 Week 6

We are particularly proud of our Writer of the Week this week. He has been determined to win the award and consequently has been trying really hard with his writing all week. He has done independent writing nearly every day! He has been challenged to write about different things and to start including more finger spaces. Great job!

Our Mathematician of the Week also did a fabulous job this week. She initiated her own activity in the classroom counting the correct number of pegs.  She was then able to extend it when challenged to order the numbers she had. She spotted some were missing so knew to add them in. Our Mathematician  was also spotted helping her friends with their Maths earlier in the week. Fabulous!!!

Writing About the Ambulance

We decided that we wanted to write a sentence ourselves to put on the blog.

We had to think carefully about our sentence and wrote it out on paper first to make sure we’d sounded out all the sounds we needed and the letters were all there. We used the tricky word book mark too.

Then we used the keyboard to type the letters we needed. It was a little bit confusing because all the letters on the keyboard were in capitals. We used a special alphabet strip to make sure we knew the capital letters and the lower case letters which matched up. We also had to learn where the finger space bar was at the bottom.

This is the sentence that we wrote:

the  bandjs  ar    in      the amblans.

(The bandages are in the ambulance.)

Chinese New Year Celebrations

Last week we saw on the calendar it was Chinese New Year and decided that we wanted to find out more about it.

We saw on the picture and on the front of the Chinese New Year book in our classroom there was dragon. We went to look at the Y6 dragon on the staircase in school. It made us decide that we wanted to make our own. We watched a video of a dragon dance and thought we could do a dragon dance of our own. We talked about what we saw.

There was another discussion about Chinese Food. Lots of the children said they’ve not tried it before so we decided that is what we should do.

We also thought what else we wanted to know about Chinses New Year and wrote some questions. Some of us wrote it by ourselves, some of us wrote shared sentences with teacher help.

During the week we did lots of learning about Chinese New Year. We watched some videos to find out more. You can watch them here.  There is one about preparing for Chinese New Year, one about celebrating Chinese New Year and one with the Chinese New Year Story.

We enjoyed having our own races outside and seeing which animal came first, second and third when we ran.

When our dragon was finished we did what we said we wanted to and took it to the Hall to do some dragon dancing. Some of us made the dragon dance and some of us played the instruments for the music.

One of our favourite things we did during the week was we tried Chinese Food. Miss Parker said we had to cook it ourselves so we went to the oven and the microwave to cook it before we could eat it.

We have loved learning about Chinese New Year!

What have we been learning? 

  • about how different people celebrate. 
  • some of the ways that Chinese people celebrate Chinese New Year. 
  • to think of questions about what we could find out. 
  • to find out the answers to our questions. 
  • to order numbers and use ordinal numbers such as first, second and third. 
  • to taste new foods and talk about how it tasted. 
  • to move to music and create our own.

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Watch the videos again and see if you can find out anything new. 
  • Have some races in the park and see who the winner is. 
  • Think of some other things that you’d like to find out and look in books to find the answer.

Our Fabulous Volcano

We had a great time learning about volcanoes recently. It actually came about due to a misconception that one of the children had when they confused the cave in We’re Going On a Bear Hunt for a volcano.

It started is thinking what is a volcano and could we make our own. First we watched a video about volcanoes to find out more.

Then we started to think if we could make our own volcano which would erupt.

It took a full week to make as we had to do the paper mache and wait for it to dry before we could paint it. We had to look at lots of books and remember the video to find out what they looked like. We went to our school library to find some volcano books.

 

Finally our volcano was ready to see if it would erupt. We were all very excited to see what would happen.

Our volcano did erupt but it also spent some time when it didn’t so we talked about when volcanoes are dormant or extinct.

We also shared our learning with some of the children in Garnet class and showed them our videos.
