Chicks, Chicks, Chicks….

What an amazing last day of term we had…. after waiting such a long time for our chicks to hatch, they did! We’d had them in the classroom keeping them warm in the incubator for 21 days (Click here to see the post)

Everyone was so excited when we came to school on the last day and one chick had already hatched. It was then very exciting when we got to spend the rest of the day watching the others hatch as well, by the end of the day we had 6 chicks. Some of our parents and carers even got to see the chicks hatching at our Easter Workshop.

In the afternoon we said a special hello to the chicks and everyone had a chance to hold a chick. Miss Parker and Miss Deakin were really proud of how sensible everyone was and how they held the chicks really carefully. After we all had to wash our hands remembering what we learnt at Cannon Hall about always washing our hands after being near animals.

We LOVED having the chicks in our classroom and are going to be sad now they’ve had to go back to their farm.

What have we been learning?

  • About the life cycle and how chicks come from eggs. 
  • To observe animals talking about what we can see, hear and feel. 
  • To care for animals and treat them with respect. 
  • To make sure we follow hygiene rules after handling animals to keep ourselves safe. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Visit Graves Park or somewhere else with hens and chicks so you can continue to observe the animals at different stages of the life cycle. 
  • Look for other birds when you are out and about and in your garden. Can you find out what they are? 
  • Find out about different life cycles, such as tadpoles/ frogs, caterpillar/ butterflies or  even for plants. You can use books at the library and internet searches to help you.

A Visit from the Ambulance

We had a special visitor on the Monday of Safety Week. Don from the Ambulance service came to see everyone in FS and KS1. First of all he talked to us in the Hall. We found out about his job and how he keeps people safe. Then we got to see his special uniform and some children got to try it on.

After that we went outside to see the ambulance. Some of us were a bit worried about going in the ambulance because we’d never been in one before but everyone had a turn. We thought of some questions to ask Don like, ‘How does the ambulance know where to go?’ and ‘Why is there a snake on the ambulance badge?’ Can you remember what Don told us?

We also had a good look around the outside of the ambulance. Don put the lights on and the siren. It was really loud. Can you remember why is has to be really loud?

It was great having Don in school and we hope he can come again sometime.

How Are You Feeling Today?

You might have seen the new display in our classroom called How Are You Feeling Today? We look at it twice a day every day to see how everyone is feeling and if they are feeling sad or scared we think of how we can help them. We understand that not everyone will be happy all of the time but we don’t want anyone to be unhappy or worried when we can help them. We also talk about the different ways in which we can be happy. We’ve used the characters from Inside Out to help us understand the different feelings.

These are some of the things we say when we put our pictures onto the different emotions.

As you can see there are still question marks for Disgust. Not many children have chosen this emotion so we’ve not heard many reasons for why you might feel disgust. Can you think of any with your grown ups? 

If we do say something that is making us sad or worried there is always a chance for the children to talk to a grown up about it and hopefully they can help. Any serious concerns or worries would be followed up using the correct school procedures and policies.

The children put their pictures up first thing in the morning just before we start our first morning carpet session and then look at them again straight after dinnertime.

The whole school does something similar with the children giving a number out of 10 to say how they are feeling each day.

Staying Safe Online

We’ve been talking about staying safe when we’re on the Internet in school. We know this means on the computer, the laptop and the iPads. We are also learning this means smartphones and our gaming computers at home.

To help us stay safe in school we read a story book called Penguin Pig by Stuart Spendlow. Can you remember what happened in the story?

We talked about the things we needed to do to make sure we are safe on the Internet and what to do if we feel unsure or worried. Everyone signed an Acceptable Use Policy to say they agreed to stay safe.

We learnt about Hector the Protector who can help keep us safe. He is on the big screen in our classroom and all the laptops.mif we see sale thing we don’t like we click on him then tell the teacher.  We’ll learn more about him during the year.

What have we been learning?

  • To stay safe on the Internet.
  • The differnet places we go on the Internet.
  • What to do if we feel worried on the Internet in school.

How can you continue the learning at home?

  • Talk to your child about when they go in the Internet at home. The most important thing you can do to keep your child safe is talk to them and encourage them to talk to you.
  • Make sure you have appropriate age restrictions from your Internet provider at home. You can find our more on the school’s Esafety blog here.
  • Look at the Hector the Protector website at home with your child.

A Visit to the Library

Onyx class went on their first visit to Manor Top Library this week. We had to leave school and go across the busy roads to find the Library. Everyone was so sensible and the teachers were really proud of how grown up we all were.

When we got to the Library we had a chance to look at the books. There were lots of different ones that we don’t have at school. We enjoyed looking at them and did a great job of putting them back where we found them. Some of us enjoyed listening to the grown ups read stories to us.

Soon we’ll be able to start borrowing the books and take them home to look at. If your child doesn’t have a library card or you haven’t completed a form yet please ask in class. We have some forms so you don’t have to go to the Library. If you have your child’s Library card at home please send it to school so we can keep it at the Library.

We need parents/ carers to come to the Library with us when we go. We are unable to go without extra adults to help us walk to the Library and help us read the books. If you are able to come with us please sign up in the classroom.  We go every other Monday afternoon 1.30-2.30pm but our next visit is November 7th because of the half term break. Unfortunately we are unable to take younger brothers or sisters with us.

When we went to the Library it was a fantastic opportunity for us remember the Road Safety Janene had taught us the week before. We had to make sure to Stop- Look- Listen- Think and Hold Hands all the way there. We pressed the buttons on the Pelican crossings and waited for the green man to tell us to walk. We wore our tabards to make sure we were bright and everyone could see us.

What we are learning? 

  • To read and look at books for enjoyment. 
  • To handle books carefully turning the pages the correct way. 
  • To walk across the busy roads remembering our Road Safety. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Read books as much as possible. You should read at least one book a day together. 
  • Visit the Library with your child and borrow books to take home. 
  • Remember to always be safe on the roads and remember what your child has been taught with them.

Keeping Safe on the Roads

On Friday 7th October Janene came to visit us to talk about Road Safety. It is especially important we think about this as the nights start to get darker but we need to stay safe near the roads all the time.

She talked to us about the Green Cross Code. Can you remember your Green Cross Code?

Remember to Stop, Look, Listen, Think and Hold Hands every time your near the roads.

We learnt about staying safe near Pelican crossings, Puffin crossings and Zebra crossings. Can you remember which one is which?  We practised crossing them in our classroom.

Janene showed us what the Lollipop person looks like. They help us to cross the road safely but we need to remember to keep holding our grown ups hand as well and remember to walk.

We also learnt about staying safe in the car and that we had to always sit on our special car seat and also put our seat belt on every time. The car seat makes sure that our seat belt is in the correct place for us even though we are little.

Finally, we said goodbye to Spike the Hedgehog and his family and said a big thank you to Janene for coming to talk to us and help keep us safe.

Settling In

The Summer is over and we’ve all now started in Onyx class and have been doing a fantastic job of settling in. Miss Parker, Miss Morris and all the other teachers have been so proud of us and how grown up we’ve been. We’ve been having loads of fun exploring our new classroom and the outdoor area. For some of us there haven’t been that many differences from Nursery at Prince Edward but some of us have had to get used to everything being different.

We’ve also been learning to use the self serve snack area where we can choose between water and milk each day and have a piece of fruit. We have to remember to wash our hands and put all our rubbish in the bins ourselves.

 

We also had chance to explore the new outdoor ‘park’ on one of our first days. We’ve been talking about how to make sure we stay safe when we are playing on it and what to do when we can’t reach the next bit. There were lots of determined faces as they children really challenged themselves to be successful. We also talked about how the equipment is only for use in school time when school adults are supervising. Please remember not to allow your child to play on the equipment at the beginning and end of the school day. 

At the end of last week we went to the Dinner Hall for our dinners. It was very exciting to be like the big kids and eat our dinner in the Hall. Jayden even said, “School dinners are the best” and Mateo said he was going to have a dinner at school everyday! All the teachers, including Mr Sieczkarek and Mrs Ainsley, were impressed at how well the children coped with all the new routines. We loved seeing some of our older brothers, sisters and friends in the hall and we’re all super excited to go and play outside after our dinner with them next week.

 

Well done Onyx Class on a fabulous start to the school year! You’re the best! 🙂
