Chicks, Chicks, Chicks….

What an amazing last day of term we had…. after waiting such a long time for our chicks to hatch, they did! We’d had them in the classroom keeping them warm in the incubator for 21 days (Click here to see the post)

Everyone was so excited when we came to school on the last day and one chick had already hatched. It was then very exciting when we got to spend the rest of the day watching the others hatch as well, by the end of the day we had 6 chicks. Some of our parents and carers even got to see the chicks hatching at our Easter Workshop.

In the afternoon we said a special hello to the chicks and everyone had a chance to hold a chick. Miss Parker and Miss Deakin were really proud of how sensible everyone was and how they held the chicks really carefully. After we all had to wash our hands remembering what we learnt at Cannon Hall about always washing our hands after being near animals.

We LOVED having the chicks in our classroom and are going to be sad now they’ve had to go back to their farm.

What have we been learning?

  • About the life cycle and how chicks come from eggs. 
  • To observe animals talking about what we can see, hear and feel. 
  • To care for animals and treat them with respect. 
  • To make sure we follow hygiene rules after handling animals to keep ourselves safe. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Visit Graves Park or somewhere else with hens and chicks so you can continue to observe the animals at different stages of the life cycle. 
  • Look for other birds when you are out and about and in your garden. Can you find out what they are? 
  • Find out about different life cycles, such as tadpoles/ frogs, caterpillar/ butterflies or  even for plants. You can use books at the library and internet searches to help you.

Chocolatey Easter Baking

For Global Citizenship Week we refreshed our learning about Fairtrade from earlier in the year. We learnt about how chocolate gets to us from the plants in Africa. Did you know chocolate comes from a plant? 

We decided that we wanted to make something with our chocolate and because it was also nearly Easter decided to make Chocolate Easter Buns. We had to safely melt the chocolate watching carefully to observe what happens. There was lots of talk about what we could see and also smell! It smelt yummy.

We helped to make the buns following the recipe and weighing out the ingredients. We also had to count out the eggs for the top to make sure there was an equal number on each on.

What have we been learning? 

  • where our food comes from in the world. 
  • which food is Fairtrade and what this means. 
  • where our favourite chocolate comes from and how it gets to us in Sheffield. 
  • what different chocolate tastes like and how we can use different and interesting words to talk about it. 
  • about what happens to chocolate when it gets hot and melts. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • look at different foods at home and in the supermarket to see where it comes from. 
  • talk about the taste of foods using as many different words as possible. Examples are:  sweet, sour, salty, spicy, chewy, soft, crunchy, fizzy, fruity, gooey, mushy, icy, cold, hot. 
  •  look for other foods which melt when they get hot and talk about what happens when it cools down again.

Making Butter!

Before we went to Cannon Hall Farm we talked about the milking that we would see and talked about…

What can you make from milk?

Adam said, “You can make a cup of tea.”  Dontae knew you could make “chocolate” and apart from that we weren’t really sure.

Miss Parker said she knew of something that we could make ourselves in the classroom so we had a go. We made some butter!

It was hard work because we had to shake the jar a LOT! We passed the jar around the circle and made the butter as a team so our arms didn’t get too tired. Lexi said, “My arms are tired.”

After a little while we took the lid off and saw that the cream had got thicker but it didn’t look like butter yet. We put the lid back on and shook it some more. After everyone had had another turn we took the lid off again. We thought it would be different this time because the noise the jar was making when we shook had changed. Jayden said he could hear, “flump, flump, flump.” Miah also noticed there was milk back in the jar, “Its turned to milk, look!” We found out that was the buttermilk which is formed when the butter is ready.

When we’d made the butter we had some on a cracker. We had to use the knife to butter our own cracker then we could sprinkle some cheese on it. When we read the packet we found out that cheese came from milk as well. We also had a drink of goat’s milk because we’d found out about it at the farm but no one had tried it before, including Miss Parker and Miss Morris.

What have we been learning? 

  • which products come from milk. 
  • about turning liquids into solids and talking about what happens. 
  • to use a knife to spread butter. 
  • to try new foods and drinks which we haven’t had before.

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Find some other products which are made from milk. Which is your favourite? 
  • Have a go at making butter at home. We used a small glass jar with a marble in it. 
  • What else do you know about which turns from a liquid into a solid? Here’s a clue: What happens to water when it get really cold?

Our Visit to Cannon Hall Farm

We had a wonderful time this week when we went to Cannon Hall Farm. We got really lucky and had a perfect weather day 🙂

We got to Cannon Hall Farm on a double decker bus. Onyx class got the top deck on the way there and once we all had our seatbelts on we were ready to go. We were really high up!

We went up to Manor Top first and it was fun looking at all the familiar places from up so high. Where can you see that you know? 

We got to Cannon Hall on the motorway and saw lots of different vehicles on the way. We went past Meadowhall which made some children start talking about when we went to Build a Bear Workshop in January.

We knew were nearly at Cannon Hall because all the roads and houses disappeared and there were a lot more fields. It looked very different to Manor Top. Everyone started spotting more and more animals.

And then we got to Cannon Hall! Everyone was so excited. When we first got there we had some snack so we were ready to go exploring.

A lady called Nicola came to talk to us and told us where we would be going. Then it was time to go…

First we went to see the piglets. Some of them had only been born a few days before. The we went to see the teenage pigs in the next barn. They didn’t need their mummies there anymore.  We had to read the signs to make sure we were going the right direction and look for the sounds that we knew. Can you remember which were the girl pigs and which were the boy pigs? 

In the next barns there were lots of different animals. Can you remember what they were all called? We saw cows, sheep, goats, a shire horse, alpacas and llamas.

Everyone was very excited when we got to feed the animals using the special machines to send the food down to the animals. Once we had fed the animals we had to remember not to put our fingers near our mouths so we didn’t get the germs in our tummies. Can you remember which animals you fed? 

We got meet a special friend after that. Nicola got a rabbit for us to say hello to and stroke. Everyone got a turn and loved feeling the rabbits soft fur. Can you remember what the rabbit was called? After we’d stroked the rabbit we had to remember to wash our hands using soap and water.

Next it was time for the Sheep Race! Everyone got a ticket and stood ready to watch the race. We saw the sheep racing round the track and everyone was surprised to see how high they could jump. We all got a coloured ticket and waited to see which colour sheep won. There was red, yellow, blue and green. Can you remember which colour ticket you had? Can you remember which sheep was the winner? 

Before we went for dinner we went to find the lambs in their very own roundhouse. We climbed up the steps and got a really good view of them from above. We spotted that some of the lambs and sheep had numbers on them and worked out it told you who the mummy sheep was and her baby lambs. Can you read any of the numbers?

And then it was dinnertime but first we had to walk back to find where we had left our lunch. On the way we saw lots of different animals. Can you remember all the animals that we saw? We saw reindeer, rabbits, different sorts of chickens, rabbits and turkeys.

Everyone was ready for their lunch when we got back.

After dinnertime we went to see the cows being milked. In school we had talked about milk and where it comes from. We also talked about what you could make from milk from cows. Can you remember what you can make from milk? 

Then it was time for the Adventure Playground which we LOVED! Some children really challenged themselves and tried things they’d not done before, one of these things was the pole which they did with help at first before they got more confident.

What a fabulous day we had. Can you tell your grown up your favourite part of the day?

Our Fabulous Volcano

We had a great time learning about volcanoes recently. It actually came about due to a misconception that one of the children had when they confused the cave in We’re Going On a Bear Hunt for a volcano.

It started is thinking what is a volcano and could we make our own. First we watched a video about volcanoes to find out more.

Then we started to think if we could make our own volcano which would erupt.

It took a full week to make as we had to do the paper mache and wait for it to dry before we could paint it. We had to look at lots of books and remember the video to find out what they looked like. We went to our school library to find some volcano books.

 

Finally our volcano was ready to see if it would erupt. We were all very excited to see what would happen.

Our volcano did erupt but it also spent some time when it didn’t so we talked about when volcanoes are dormant or extinct.

We also shared our learning with some of the children in Garnet class and showed them our videos.
