Escape from the Volcano

Everyone had been talking about volcanos and playing a game called ‘Escape from the Lava’ for ages so we decided we should learn about volcanoes in class.

Miss Parker found a book which told us a bit more about volcanoes. Can you remember what it taught us?

We also watched a video that lots of us had seen at home. You can watch it again here. Can you tell a grown up how an island grows?

Then we watched some videos of some real volcanoes and found out there were volcanoes erupting right now while we were in school. We thought about how we would feel if there was lava coming towards our homes. Miss Parker told us about when she went to an volcano but thankfully it wasn’t erupting when she was there.

We thought how we would help the people in Hawaii escape after they wrote to us asking for help. We came up with a few suggestions.

There was lots more role play and children wanting to experience what it was like to be near the lava. Outside was a popular place for this and the children loved building bridges and other ways to stay safe. They used our loose parts in all sorts of imaginative ways and even added water to be lava.

 

As the children were so engrossed in making up stories we used this to practise our writing skills. First we had to THINK IT and decide what we wanted to happen in our story. We drew a story map to help us remember it.

Then we had to SAY IT for each sentence so we could remember what to write. Then we had to WRITE IT. We worked hard to sound out the words and think of the letters we needed to write. Here is the beginning and the middle of the story.

When we had written it we had to READ IT to see if we’d done a good job. Can you see the ticks and crosses on our writing? We used the sentence hand to make sure we’d remembered everything putting a tick if we had and a cross if we hadn’t. On Wednesday we forgot our capital letter but on Thursdays we remembered them.

Our learning about volcanoes went over two weeks because we were all so interested and there was so much to learn and do. We decided we wanted to make a volcano of our own and see if we could make it erupt. It took us all week to make. We started with a bottle and some masking tape.

Then we had to use papier-mâché to build the shape of the volcano. It took a long time because we had to wait for it to dry in between.

 

Everyone enjoyed helping with our volcano which was good because there were still more jobs. Next we had to paint our volcanoes. First we painted the mountain and the grass before we added the lava. We used one of our volcano books to help us think what the volcano should look like.

 

Finally our volcano was ready and it was time to watch it erupt. Miss Parker used bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar to create the lava inside the volcano. Everybody loved it and said it was well worth the wait.

We loved learning about volcanoes.

How can you continue the learning?

  • Watch the video above and talk about how the volcanoes grow.
  • Use Google to find videos of real volcanoes and watch the lava flow (Make sure before doing any Google search with children that you have the appropriate safety measures in place)
  • Continue the story above writing it either on paper or typing it.

A Big Bug Hunt

We’ve been doing lots of learning about bugs recently linked to getting caterpillars in our classroom and our thinking about The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Miss Parker told us we were going to go to the Secret Garden to see if we could find some more bugs. Most of us had never been to the Secret Garden before and weren’t sure where it was. Jonathan thought we’d have to leave school and was very excited to find out it was in our school grounds.

First we listened to what we could hear in the Secret Garden. We closed our eyes and listened and then played a game where we had to listen really carefully. There were lots of birds singing. We looked hard to see where they were hiding but lots of them were hiding.

After that it was time to go looking for bugs. We had to be very quiet so we didn’t scare them away. We took special containers with us and magnifying glasses so we could collect the bugs that we found.

We found lots of bugs and even managed to find some really tiny ones. We talked about what we’d seen and compared our experiences. Miss Parker and Miss Deakin were really pleased by how we used our observation skills to not only find the bugs but then to notice details about them.

We can’t wait to go in the Secret Garden again and have asked Miss Parker if we can go again really soon!

Our Day at Cannon Hall Farm

We all had a wonderful time on our school trip to Cannon Hall Farm. We looked at the photos when we got back to school and Miss Parker turned it into a book all about our day. We remembered so much about what we’d done and where we’d been. We really did learn lots not only about the farm animals but also about an environment which is very different to Manor Top and near school.

We had such a good day its hard to say what our favourite part of the day was. You’ll have to ask us next time you see us.

Gummy Bear Science

When we were talking about what the children knew about bears some children began to talk about Gummy Bears.

Vinnie said he knew an experiment where the bears get bigger so we decided to give it a go and see if we could make our Gummy Bears bigger.

We made it more interesting by putting our Gummy Bears in different liquids and seeing if it made a difference. Everyone predicted what would happen and we recorded it in our Floor Book.

Then we left our Gummy Bears alone for a week only looking to see what was happening.

We loved that they’d got bigger! We talked about how it had happened and OSMOSIS!

  • Look out for other fun Science experiments you can do together at home online and in Science books
  • Try the Gummy Bear experiment at home- you could try it with different liquids such as washing up liquid.

We Love Forest Schools

We had a fantastic time on Monday morning when we had our first Forest Schools session. Matt and Sarah came from the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust to help us.

First we played a warm up game called Winter Dragons. We had to work hard to keep moving and rescue our friends who had been frozen by the dragons.

Then we got to go into the Secret Garden. We were excited to go into the Secret Garden because we’d loved it when we went for the Great Bug Hunt with Miss Oades. Thankfully it was a bit drier when we went today.

When we got to the Secret Garden we played a game called Ninja where we had to sneak up on each other and steal the nature treasure. It meant we had to be super quiet and use our listening ears to find out when the Ninja was coming for the treasure. It also meant we could hear lots of other sounds all around us. Can you remember anything that you heard in the Secret Garden? 

Our next game was called Woolly Worms. For this game to had to use our observation skills and look really carefully to see if we could spot the ‘worms’. Some of them were much easier to find than others. Some of us had to look for a little while to see them while others of us saw them straight away!

Matt and Sarah then told us it was time for a Bug Hunt. We had some special equipment to help us catch the bugs that we found. We talked about if it would different or the same as last time we went in the rain. It was amazing how many different little creatures we managed to find. Would you believe that we found snails, butterflies, grasshoppers, ladybirds, spiders, moths, beetles and lots of different flies and bugs? Can you tell someone about your favourite one? 

This photograph at the bottom has a baby ladybird in it and pupa which the baby ladybird uses to turn into a ladybird. This is the same as when the caterpillar spins its cocoon and turns into a butterfly. 

We were able to look at them in the special containers and we spent a long time looking at and talking about them all. Everyone was very excited to look for different creatures and we looked for nearly an hour without stopping!

After that it was time to let the creatures go and we started another fun activity. Matt and Sarah gave us special sticky strips of paper and we could go and collect whatever we wanted to stick our paper. We looked for special shaped leaves, colours which interested us and other interesting objects such as feathers. Can you see what is on our special papers? 

Finally Matt had a challenge or two for us. He sent us off to find the skinniest thing we could find. Then we had to find the softest thing we could and the most inserting shape leaf we could find.

We LOVE Forest Schools and can’t wait to go again next week!

Planting Tomatoes

Do you remember in Environment Week when we went to look at our allotment? Miss Parker decided we needed to learn about plants because lots of us got confused when looking at the roots, leaves and stems on the weeds and weren’t sure what to call them. We decided we would plant some seeds so we could watch them grow and talk about what we could see.

We were lucky in school to receive some tomato seeds from the National Schools Partnership.

We got busy planting making sure we had enough soil for the seeds and that we covered them up. Garnet class came to make sure everyone in Reception had one.

And then we had to wait…….

We are looking very carefully to see if we can see the stem and the leaves starting to grow. Can you see them? Why can’t you see the roots?

Caterpillars, Caterpillars (Part 4)

This should really be called Butterflies, Butterflies because look what happened?

Our caterpillars hatched from out of their cocoons and we had 4 butterflies in our classroom 🙂 Everyone loved watching them fly and if we looked really carefully we could even see them drinking through their proboscis. Can you remember anything about their proboscis? 

After we’d had them in our classroom for a few days we decided that we needed to let them go. We had a talk about where would be the best place for them to fly. It was agreed that we would go up on to the new school field by the Secret Garden because the children said there were the most plants and flowers there.

Thankfully it was a sunny day because we weren’t sure if the butterflies would like the rain.

Miss Parker unzipped the Butterfly Garden and pulled it down slightly. It didn’t take long for the butterflies to fly off into the sky. We all clapped and cheered when they went.

We’re going to be keeping an eye out over the next few weeks to see if we can see our butterflies when they come back to visit us. We’re sure they will fly back one day and see us 🙂 Maybe they will fly to our houses?
