World Book Day 2017

We had a fabulous time celebrating World Book Day this year. Everyone came to school dressed as their favourite book characters, including all the teachers! Can you remember what everyone came dressed as?  The winning costume in our class was this one- well done!!!

We’d been doing maths this week linked to data handling and creating graphs so we decided to find out our favourite book. Everyone had a cube and voted for their favourite using their cube. We then made the cubes into towers to see which was the tallest. After that we turned the information we had collected into lots of different graphs which showed the same information in different ways. Can you see which our favourite was?

We had to turn our classroom door into our favourite book. We did it a little bit differently though. Although Oi Dog! was our favourite we made our door into Oi Frog! We decided that you couldn’t read Oi Dog! if you’ve not read Oi Frog! because, as Jayden pointed out, “the beginning of Oi Dog! is the end of Oi Frog!” We wanted to make sure everyone in school knew about the first book. Everyone worked really hard as a team to make the decorations for our door. Some children even had to write why they thought the book was hilarious, just like the sticker on the actual book cover.

Once we’d done our door we went for a walk round school to look at everyone else’s. Didn’t they do an amazing job? Can you see which ones School Council made the winner? Which one is your favourite?

We also all visited the School Library to get a book to take home. There were so many books to take home it was sometimes difficult to decide which one we wanted. Everyone chose the one they wanted and had it stamped before taking it home. We’re going to visit the School Library every Thursday if we’ve brought our book back.

What another great World Book Day!

How can you continue the learning at home?

  • Read books together everyday. It is proven that reading everyday, just for ten minutes, makes children much better readers.
  • Use your £1 World Book Day token to get either a free book or to get money off any book of your choice.
  • Make sure your child returns their school library book so they can take another one each week and visit the Manor Top Library together regularly.

Getting Changed for PE

Today was a very special day in Onyx class, we got changed for PE for the very first time. A huge thank you to all the parents/ carers who sent PE kits to school, nearly everybody had a PE kit. Look how smart we all look….

We all did a fantastic job of getting changed all by ourselves. Miss Parker and Miss Morris only had to help with a few top buttons and some pairs of tights but these are really tricky. Everyone did a great job of remembering where all their clothes were and only putting on the right ones. Some children were even feeling confident enough to help others.

Miss Webster popped in from Nursery and was very impressed with how independent everyone was being.  We showed her the stars we were getting on our Star Cards 🙂

We all loved PE in the Main Hall. We played a game where one of us had to give instructions to everyone else so they knew how to move. We had to listen very carefully and then think how to move in all the different ways. Can you remember all the different ways we had to move?

Don’t forget to leave your child’s PE kit in school and then it’ll be there when we need it again next week. Our Hall session for PE is Thursday mornings.

What we have been learning?

  • To get dressed and undressed ourselves.
  • To listen to instructions.
  • To move in different ways.

How can you continue the learning at home?

  • Let your child get dressed and undressed themselves- it might take longer but they will get quicker!
  • Keep practising with tricky zips and buttons.

Wonderful World Book Day 2016

We had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day this year. There was lots going on. Our school library officially opened so we went for a look round and to borrow our very own school library book. It was great to see all the books we could borrow and choose our favourite to take home.

We all got dressed up on World Book Day and wore costumes of our favourite book characters. Look how fantastic we look. Can you guess who we are?

We went to a whole school assembly with Andy Messer who is a storyteller. He told us a wonderful story although we all thought it was gross when the monster was being sick! It was great to be able to see everyone’s costumes in school as well.

We also went to a special session just for Onyx and Garnet class with Andy where he told us another story just for us. We then got to ask Andy some questions about the stories he tells.

And we weren’t finished there! We decorated our door with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom with everyone working hard to complete their part of the tree or the their letter to climb up the tree. We had a look at everyone else’s doors round school as well.

What a busy day! We loved it though and enjoyed all the books and stories.

What have we been learning?

  • To enjoy stories and books.
  • To listen to stories.
  • To talk about the stories we hear and the books we read.
  •  To talk about our favourite books and stories.

How can you continue the learning at home?

  • Look at your school library book together and share the story.
  • Visit the library at Manor Top and take a book home.
  • Make up some stories of your own together. What’s the silliest story you can make up? What’s the scariest story you can tell?
  • Go to the Book Shop with your World Book Day £1 book token and swap it for a free book
