A Visit to Build A Bear Workshop Visit

We had a wonderful time last week when we visited Build a Bear Workshop at Meadowhall. We had to walk to the bus stop and catch the number 18 bus. We saw lots of interesting things out of the window on the way.

Once we got to Meadowhall Bus Interchange then we had to walk to find Build a Bear Workshop. We had to go across roads, go up steps, go over bridges, go down escalators and walk past all the shops. It was a great opportunity to use some of the position words we’ve been learning in Maths this week and last. It also gave us a good opportunity to practise our reading and work out what it said on the floor. Can you read it to a grown up now?

Corey also managed to spot a volcano! Can you see it? This was good because Mateo had been asking when we were going on our Volcano Hunt.

We made it to Build a Bear Workshop 🙂

Once we got to Build a Bear Workshop we had the serious business to attend to and a bear to choose! We had three bears to choose from… can you remember which one you wanted?

Everyone helped to fill our bear with fluff by pressing the pedal with our foot. We worked together with our friend.

Then we had to make a wish to put in our bear and also blow lots of kisses with fill our new friend with love. Then they were tied at the back so nothing fell back out.

After that we had to choose a name for our bear; we choose Onyx Dog when we talked about it. The last thing we had to do was get Onyx Dog some clothes so she can come to all our houses and school. While the grown ups had a look for some clothes for us to choose from we all had a hug with Onyx Dog and said hello for the first time.

Then we were ready to go back to school so we had to go and find the Bus Interchange again. We found the right bus stop using the letters and numbers and caught the bus back to school. Everyone was very sensible when the bus we should have been catching didn’t run and we had to wait for the next bus.

Everyone was very excited on the way back because it was a double decker bus and Miss Parker let us sit upstairs. We wondered if we would fit under the bridge but thankfully we did!

The excitement wasn’t over then though. When we got back to school there were lots and lots of fire engines outside school! Thankfully the firefighters were only practising in the old school building and there was no real fire. It meant we got to have a really good look at them as we walked past.

Well done Onyx Class! You were superstars all morning and made it a wonderful visit. I’m sure Onyx Dog is looking forward to coming to all your houses for a visit soon. Also a HUGE thank you to all the parents who came with us, we couldn’t go on our visits without you!

The Chimpanzees of Happy Town

We had a wonderful treat last week when we went to the Crucible Theatre in the city centre to watch the musical performance of The Chimpanzees of Happy Town.

For some of us it was the first time we had ever been on a tram so we loved getting there and back.

We took a picnic with us and ate it in the Winter Gardens before having a little walk round and look at all the different plants.

We learnt some of the songs before we went and listening to the story so we could join in with the singing. Lots of us enjoyed dancing along to the songs as well.

Everyone had a wonderful time and Miss Parker and Miss Morris were really proud of how well behaved everyone was the whole time we were out of school. A big thank you too to the grown ups who came with us 🙂

We did lots of thinking about the Chimps when we got back to school to think how they were feeling in Drabsville and Happy Town. We had to think of lots of interesting words to use instead of just happy and sad. Can you remember any of them? Look on the cupboard door in the classroom to see them all.

It was Anti-Bullying Week this week too so we thought about how the Mayor was a bully and what we would do if there was a bully in our school. We also talked about what a bully is and how it means that someone is nasty to you or hurts you everyday and it is the same person everyday. Look at our fabulous story Onyx Class and the Bullies which we wrote together.

Finally we thought what we would want in our precious box if we could have one just like Chutney’s. We had to work with our special talk partner to think of an idea and draw it on our piece of paper. Here’s what we all said:

Jakoby and Theo- A dog because Chutney will sort the dog out.

Elijah and Hamisi- A fire because it looks nice.

Adam and Leighanna- Happytown because it is my favourite.

Sofia and Rosie-Leigh- A flower because its our favourite.

Mia N and Mateo- Basketball because it our favourite. Its my favourite sport.

Lexi and Evie- Flowers because they’re pretty.

Jessica and Alexis- Rain because it rains in Happy Town.

Taela-Rose and Jayden- Pudsey because he is a happy one.

Harlie and Mary- A jar of seeds because the seeds need the water.

Sophie and Safira- Star because they twinkle.

Grace and Summer- A seed because it is our favourite.

Corey and Kiefer- A walking tram because I wanted to go in it.

Mia B and Gracie-Mai- We made Chutney because he belongs there.

Have a look in our floor book to see pictures of the seeds we planted.

What have we been learning?

  • to listen to music and join in with the singing.
  • to respond to music in a variety of ways.
  • to go on a school trip and represent Prince Edward Primary.
  • to see some of the important buildings in our home city of Sheffield.
  • to know what a bully is and what we can do about it.
  • to think what is precious to us.

How can you continue the learning at home?

  • Watch the video at home and sing the songs.
  • Attend the family concert of Chimpanzees of Happy Town together. There are more details here.
  • Make a precious box and decorate it to make it look amazing. What would you put in it?

A Visit to Cannon Hall Farm

We had an amazing day at Cannon Hall Farm. It was so exciting going on the coach to get there. Some children even read the map on the coach to help show us the way. We saw Meadowhall on the way. It took us a while to get there but we knew we were getting close when the houses disappeared and there were lots more fields. It looked very different to Manor Top.

First, we had a snack to get us ready for the day ahead.

After that we met Darryl and went for a look at the animals. Some children thought it was a little bit stinky! Darryl showed us the pigs first and there were some that were only 4 days old. They were much smaller than the rest. Can you remember all the other animals we saw?

When we’d seen lots of animals it was our turn to feed them. Darryl gave us some special feeding pellets and we had to find the special chutes to get the food to the animals. After we had to make sure we remembered to wash our hands.

After feeding the animals we went to meet a new friend. Everyone was very gentle when were were allowed to stroke the rabbit and made sure we took care of him.

Before it was time for lunch we went to watch the sheep racing! Everyone got a special ticket for the colour sheep they thought would be the winner. Can you remember who the winner was?

Then it was time for lunch. We were all really hungry after a busy morning.

First in the afternoon we went to see the sheep and the lambs. We had to climb up high onto a special platform and be careful not to scare the sheep and lambs. It was great to be able to see them from above.

After that it was time to go and see the cows being milked. We’d talked about this in school and lots of us knew that milk came from cows. We’d not seen it actually happening before though. We looked really carefully and could see the milk on the bottom and the cream rising to the top.

Finally the part of the day everyone had been really excited about- we got to go on the Adventure Playground! It was lots of fun 🙂

And then it was time for us to go back to school. What an amazing  day we all had at Cannon Hall Farm.

Look at our floor book pages to see what we had to say about our fabulous day out.

This is what we said before we went…

And this is what we said when we got back…FullSizeRender-2

Come back soon to find out what we did with the cream we got from Cannon Hall Farm.

What have we been learning?

  • the animals which live on a farm.
  • the names of the baby animals and which adult they match with.
  • some of the different produce which comes from farm animals.
  • about a location different to Manor Top.
  • how to take care of animals.
  • to make sure we keep ourselves safe and clean on the farm by keep waking our hands.

How can you continue the learning at home?

  • visit Graves Park or Heeley City Farm to visit the animals there.
  • have a look for different foods in the supermarket and see if you can see any which come from a farm.
  • think about how to take care of pets in your home. How is this the same and different to the how the farmer takes care of the animals on the farm?
  • Click on the link to see the Cannon Hall website and even watch a video of some of the animals.

The Day we went to Build a Bear

This week was very exciting as we went on our first school trip. We caught the bus and went to Build a Bear Workshop at Meadowhall. This was all part of the learning we’ve been doing about Anti-Bullying Week.

Dalton was able to talk all about it….. “We came in Build a Bear and sit on the floor and we build a bear with fluff and then Elisha put clothes on it and after that we had a picture. After that we had a look at lights and after that eat dinner”

Here are the pictures of how we got to Meadowhall. First we had to walk to the bus stop remembering what we’ve learnt about road safety when we were near the busy roads. We wore our tabards so we were bright and easy to see.

Then we could see Build a Bear Workshop! Everyone was very excited.

We went into Build a Bear Workshop and Ryan helped us to make our bear. We had to choose which type of bear we wanted and which clothes she was going to wear. We had to work as a team and vote for our favourites. We understood that we got to decide as a whole class so it might not be our first choice which was picked.

We even got to vote for our bear’s name. The winner was Millie Ethel.

Here we all are with our new friend. Can you spot her?

After we’d got our we went to look at some of the Christmas lights and we found the Lego shop as well. It made us wonder what we could make from Lego back at school.

After that we even had time for a picnic at Meadowhall with our special school sandwiches before we headed back to school.

The children were very well behaved during the visit and got a certificate on Friday in Special Mentions Assembly for being Charming Citizens and excellent ambassadors for our school.

If you want to see photos of the whole story of The Day we went to Build a Bear look out for the book in our book corner or when Millie Ethel starts coming to your homes.

A big thank you to the parents/ carers who came with us. We wouldn’t be able to go on visits without your support.

If you would like to come with us on visits, please speak to us in school and we’ll let you know when we’re going and what you need to do.

What have we been learning?

  • To be part of a collective team effort to build a bear.
  • To know we have to share the bear altogether and be friends.
  • to stay safe when we’re out near the roads and in public places.
  • To look at and talk about the Christmas lights and everything else we saw on the day.

What can you do to continue the learning at home?

  • Go on visits with your child to different places in Sheffield. There are lots of places you can go for free such as The Winter Gardens, Weston Park Museum and Ecclesall Woods or Norfolk Park. Talk about how these places are the same and different to other places you have been.
  • Continue to remind your child about road safety when near roads and refer to when we go places with school. All the children we’re brilliant when we went as a class.
  • Look out for the bear coming to your home after Christmas for the weekend or a couple of nights!!!!
