Being the Teacher

We had an interesting conversation in class the other week when some of the children asked if they could be the teacher. They said that Miss Parker could go home and get a cup of tea because they knew how to be the teacher and everything would be fine.

Miss Parker explained that, lovely as that would be, it was Mr Sieczkarek who decided who got to be the teachers in school because he was the Headteacher. We talked about how all the teachers had to write a letter saying they wanted to be the teacher and explaining why they were able to do the job. The children got busy writing their letters!

The children took their letters to show Mr Sieczkarek. He was very impressed and told Miss Parker they could do some special jobs for the rest of the day. They got to give out the certificates,  choose the Writing Journal winning ticket for the week and hand out the Star Card prizes.

Everyone was so excited when we went back to class and told them what had happened and when they saw the children doing their special jobs they decided they wanted to be teachers too. We decided it was what we wanted to learn about after the holidays.

You Can’t Catch Me…

We had a visitor in Onyx class the other week. The Gingerbread Man left us some clues in our classroom. We had to go on Gingerbread Man hunt around the whole school. He left us some clues to work out. Can you remember where the clues told us to go? 

I didn’t want to be a snack, I bet you’ll never get me back. Now got to the place where there’s lot of books. 

Mr Sieczkarek told me to stop running away or I wouldn’t be able to go out and play. I walked away before we could meet and went to the place where we eat. 

You’ve not caught me yet but you will soon I bet. I’ll tell you for free I’ve gone where their three. 

We found out where lots of new places were in our school. Some of us had never been there before. We also got to meet lots of people who work in our school. Can you remember all the places we went? Can you remember all the people we meet along the way? 

When we got back to the classroom we found some gingerbread men. Everyone enjoyed their special treat. It started us talking about the Gingerbread Man and what we knew about him.

We decided that’s what we want to learn about the week after. We retold the story, we acted out the story, we counted gingerbread men, we made some of our own in the creative workshop and then we baked some of our own as well. It was a busy week!

We had an interesting question to find out in Maths as well- Which part of the Gingerbread Man do you eat first? Although Miss Parker didn’t tell us this at first, she just told us that we were only allowed to take one bite. It was hard not to gobble him all up! When we took our bite we looked to see who had eaten which part first. Most of us had eaten the head first!

And we still never caught the Gingerbread Man. We only got to eat the little ones he left for us. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for him at home!

What have we been learning? 

  • To learn where the different spaces are in our school, insides and out. 
  • To learn some of the other people who are in our school and where our big brothers and sisters classrooms are.

‘Bake it Better’ Day 2016

The children recently had their own idea to raise some money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Some of us talked about times when we’d been to the Children’s Hospital and how they had helped us.

We realised that Bake it Better Day was nearly here and we’d best start making plans for making and selling our goodies. First we had to decide what we wanted to bake, we’d baked a lot of buns and cakes already this year so decided on biscuits. Linked to our learning about France we decided on French Butter Biscuits. We also decided how much we wanted them to cost. Garnet class decided they wanted to help us and made some biscuits as well.

 

Everyone got busy making and baking the biscuits remembering to read the recipe carefully. We had to make sure we measured everything out carefully too.

 

Once we’d made and decorated our biscuits then we had to make sure we sold them all to raise the money. There was no pinching one because that wouldn’t have helped the Children’s Hospital.

We made a poster to go in the staff room so the teachers knew what was happening.

We also sent them an email so they couldn’t miss the information.

We made some special boxes to help us carry the biscuits up to the staff room. We didn’t want to drop them!!! It was also a special job to collect the money and work out any change anybody needed. We even got to meet some teachers we’d never met before.

Everyone said they loved our biscuits. Some teachers even bought two! We managed to sell them all 🙂

A big thank you to everyone who bought our biscuits. Onyx and Garnet class managed to raise £30 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital which we will send them as soon as possible. Well done to the children for their kind work to help others 🙂

What have we been learning? 

  • To help others by thinking of ways to raise money which will help them. 
  • To write posters and emails to promote our event. 
  • To measure ingredients after reading the recipe. 
  • To work out real money and change. 
  • To talk to people we’ve not met before and get to know some different teachers at our school.

How can we continue the learning at home? 

  • Talk about other people who might need our help and how we might be able to help them. 
  • To make some biscuits at home using the recipe for biscuits. We then decorated ours with chocolate. How will you do yours? 
  • Allow your child to help you with money and change at the shops. Give them £1 to buy something and wait for the change together.
