As always, the children in Onyx class have been very busy over the past couple of weeks!
When we had lots of very rainy weather we were shocked that the Billy Goats Gruff bridge had been washed away in the floods! The children saved the day by building some brilliant bridges for the Billy Goats. Then we made some wonderful masks of the characters and acted out the story for our grown ups. We enjoyed experimenting with making different sounds using every day objects in our homes, and have been exploring technology in our homes!
Lots of children in Onyx class love superheroes. One little boy has even decorated his whole bedroom with them during the lockdown! So this week we decided to learn about Superheroes! First we read the story Supertato and the Evil Pea, – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmFYrfquR5k
Can you remember who were the characters in the story? Who was your favourite? What happened at the beginning, middle and end?
Then we made our very own superheroes using the vegetables or fruit we had in our kitchens. Miss Boyd was blown away with the children’s creations! We talked to our family and friends to find out what superpowers they would like. Everyone had different ideas: flying, super speed, strength etc. We made up our own superhero names and some children even designed the most amazing superhero costumes!
We have also been writing lists of all the super heros we know (there were lots!), taking part in a superhero active challenge, and writing our very own superhero stories!
One little girl in Onyx class has enjoyed a wonderful fairy garden in her home!
Another little girl has made Miss Boyd so proud taking care of her little brother! What a superstar!
Well done everyone, your teachers are so very proud of you all! Thank you for sharing your lovely photos from home.
For our last week in Reception, Miss Parker and the other teachers let us choose what learning we wanted to do. We had a look back at this blog and found some of our favourite activities from the year. We had to do some negotiating and comprising when different children wanted different things out and we had to make sure there weren’t just dinosaurs and fairies everywhere! Once we had decided what we would like in each area Miss Parker got busy getting everything we needed out.
Then it was our turn to get busy. We loved having all our favourite things back out.
Miss Parker will be making sure our Y1 teachers know all of our favourite activities and our favourite interests.
The last week of Summer 1 half term was Environment Week at our school. We asked the children again what they wanted to learn and as they’d been learning about Superheroes just before they decided they’d like to find out if there were any environmental superheroes. You can see here what they said on our planning sheet…..
Miss Parker found out there were some environmental superheroes so lots of our learning came from these stories.
You wouldn’t believe the mess that Litterbug Doug made of our classroom. There was rubbish thrown around EVERYWHERE! We had a busy afternoon picking it all up and sorting it into the recycling. Then it turned out he was kidding us when he turned into the litter police. He just wanted us to realise how horrible the mess was!
We also thought of lots of ways to change rubbish into useful items that we could use again. For some items this took quite a bit of thinking but we did it. You can see one of them below- the bird feeder. That then made us think of other ways we could improve our Outdoor Area.
We also thought of some other items we would like to make our new Outdoor area even better at the new school. Hopefully Miss Parker can put them on her shopping list.
At the end of the week we wrote some environmental promises to show we were able to think what we would do to help save the world.
We had a great time learning about superheroes recently. We loved talking about our favourite superheroes and learning more about some new ones.
We realised that lots of our favourite superheroes wore a special cape so we decided to make some capes of our own.
Once we’d decided on our cape design and painted the, we have to wait for them to dry. When they were dry we got to do the exciting part of the process and reveal the design…
It was fun to find out what our final capes looked like. Our favourite part though was trying them on and watching them turn us into superheroes 🙂
We decided to test our superhero strength and other powers in some Superhero PE sessions.
There were lots of other activities around our classroom too. The children loved calling their favourite superheroes for a chat on the phone.
It was great fun learning about superheroes. The children did much more deciding about the own learning and helped planned what we were going to learn. You can see our planning here……. If something has a tick it means that when we reviewed our week we decided that we’d done this. You can see where we added new ideas too.
