World Book Day 2019

We had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day last week. We had to decorate our door with our favourite book. Miss Mohammed asked all the children and they had a vote to decide which book Onyx class should recreate. We had read all the Love Monster stories by Rachel Bright when it was Valentine’s Day and loved them all. It was difficult to decide on a favourite but we decided on LOVE MONSTER AND THE LAST CHOCOLATE 🙂 

Everyone worked hard together to make the different parts we needed for our door. First we needed to make a Love Monster. We had to find a lot of different red materials so we could make him the right colour.

Then we made the chocolate box look like the purple one in the story. We added a sign which said ‘chocolates’ by looking at the book and copying what it said. The Love Monster also needed some extra details like his arms and eyes.

After that we decided to make some chocolates for the chocolate box and to add to the decorations. To do this we had to make salt dough and then make it look like chocolate shapes which fit in the chocolate box.

Before we could use them they needed painting the right colours.

Finally we put it all up on the door and some children helped Miss Parker decide what went around the door. We even added a sign asking, “Would you share your last chocolate?”, when people lifted the chocolate box up.

We all enjoyed making our door and also getting to see the different doors around school.

We also found a surprise for us in the classroom. The Love Monster came to visit and brought us the special World Book Day book, Ten Little Bookworms. You’ll soon be getting a special World Book Day token which you can exchange for this book for free. Or  you can get £1 off the books at our Book Fair which is in school next week.

After we’d read the book tried to work out where the rest of the chocolates had gone and what we should do with the last chocolate. What would you do with the last chocolate? 

Thankfully the Love Monster found them in the end 🙂

Christmas Celebrations Part 2- Our Party!

We had a wonderful day today when it was our party with Garnet class. Some children brought party clothes and got dressed up but everyone had a special party hat which we made ourselves.

When our elf appeared in the classroom this morning he asked us if we knew of any party games we could play. Lots of us said Pass the Parcel so it only seemed right that we played it at our party. Everyone got a turn but there were only 2 winners overall- one from each class. Tori Jae was particularly kind when she said well done to the winner in our class even though she must have been disappointed not to win herself.

Then it was time for some food. The teachers had asked our families to bring in some food for our party. We had to have some healthy foods alongside the crisps and a bun. Everyone tried some of the carrots, cucumber and there was also lots of fruit for us to eat.

We all had a wonderful time and we want to say a big thank you to all the parents/ carers who sent in food for our party. We loved it!

Cake Cake Cake!

What a week we had last week! The children had been talking a lot about cake. It has been a few children’s birthdays in Onyx class and some of them had brought cake to celebrate. Then it was a different child’s birthday and they didn’t bring a cake so we discussed how cake wasn’t just for birthdays and you didn’t ALWAYS get cake on someone’s birthday. We had also been talking about cake when we’d done learning about The Highway Rat the week before.

The children decided they wanted to make cake which the teachers agreed was a great idea. However, if we wanted to make cake there were a few things we needed to do first.

The very first thing we needed to do was write a list of ingredients that we would need. For this we had to find a recipe and find out what we needed. Once we had a list we asked some children to go to the shop and buy the ingredients. Before they went we talked about money and made sure they would be able to pay for the ingredients.

Once we’d got out ingredients we used our recipe to make the cake mixture. We used a special recipe which we can do ourselves where we had to balance all the ingredients with an egg. We decided we wanted to add different colours and different flavours as well.

Then we had to ask the grown ups to help us put the mixture in the oven so it could bake. We knew that we would have to wait for it to cool down and then we decorated our cake as well. Once our cake was ready we had another job to do. We only had one cake and 29 children so we had to share the cake. Miss Parker helped us by cutting the cake in half and then we kept cutting it in half until we had 8 pieces of cake. Look how yummy our cake looks…..

IMG_9871That still wasn’t enough pieces so Miss Parker made sure there were enough pieces cut from each of the 8 letting everyone have a piece.

We were excited to taste our cake. Jacob said, “Thats the besest cake I’ve ever seen!

Everyone tried the cake and most of use agreed it tasted lovely. Some of the layers tasted of peppermint and some tasted of orange!!! We were all talking about which was our favourite bit of the cake and which bits we didn’t like as much. We decided to find out which was our favourite part. We had to remember all the different parts of the cake and then we came to put a tally next to our favourite. There was a clear winner!

We didn’t just make a cake for ourselves. We knew the birds were outside and in the cold weather they needed to find lots of food to help keep them warm. We decided to make cake for the birds as well. It was very different to ours and we decided that we wouldn’t swap! We’ve hung it up in our outdoor area and are hoping the birds come to eat some soon.

We had such a fabulous week making cake and loved being involved in every part of the cake making from writing lists, counting money, going to the shop,  measuring, baking, sharing and finally to eating the cake.

How to continue the learning at home? 

  • Follow simple recipes at home to make cakes and other treats. 
  • Allow your child to pay in the shop and talk about the different coins. 
  • Share other food types at home, such as biscuits or cake between family members.

Your child will be learning maths and so much more without even knowing!

Chocolatey Easter Baking

For Global Citizenship Week we refreshed our learning about Fairtrade from earlier in the year. We learnt about how chocolate gets to us from the plants in Africa. Did you know chocolate comes from a plant? 

We decided that we wanted to make something with our chocolate and because it was also nearly Easter decided to make Chocolate Easter Buns. We had to safely melt the chocolate watching carefully to observe what happens. There was lots of talk about what we could see and also smell! It smelt yummy.

We helped to make the buns following the recipe and weighing out the ingredients. We also had to count out the eggs for the top to make sure there was an equal number on each on.

What have we been learning? 

  • where our food comes from in the world. 
  • which food is Fairtrade and what this means. 
  • where our favourite chocolate comes from and how it gets to us in Sheffield. 
  • what different chocolate tastes like and how we can use different and interesting words to talk about it. 
  • about what happens to chocolate when it gets hot and melts. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • look at different foods at home and in the supermarket to see where it comes from. 
  • talk about the taste of foods using as many different words as possible. Examples are:  sweet, sour, salty, spicy, chewy, soft, crunchy, fizzy, fruity, gooey, mushy, icy, cold, hot. 
  •  look for other foods which melt when they get hot and talk about what happens when it cools down again.

Mince Pie Maths

We’ve had an elf visiting us during the month of December. He’s come to visit from the North Pole to help Santa out before Christmas. We’ve been busy showing him what superstars we are in Onyx Class.

On Friday, Mr Elf brought us a special treat. He must have heard us talking about mince pies earlier in the week after we saw a picture of some. We knew that they were a special Christmas food but not many of us had tried them. We predicted what they would taste like. Jayden said he thought they’d taste like chocolate, Mateo said they would taste like sugar because looking at the picture on the box he could see sugar on the plate and Adam predicted they’d have raisins because the picture had raisins.

There was a problem though…

We saw there were 6 mince pies in one box. Mateo worked out that meant there would be 12 in two boxes. We opened the second box and checked to find out he was right. That left us with 12 mince pies and 28 children! What were we going to do? Someone had the idea of cutting them in two but when we counted them in twos (with Miss Parker’s help) we released that was still only 24 and not enough pieces. We decided to share each mince pie into three! With some help, we counted the mince pie pieces in three and found out that we’d have enough with some spares left over.

Everyone got some mince pie to try. We were really pleased that everyone tried the mince pie even though some of us weren’t too sure what it would be like. Some of us really liked it and some of us really didn’t! Jayden found out it didn’t taste like chocolate at all and Mateo and Adam found out they were in part right. Gracie-Mai did an amazing job of being our photographer and took lots of photos on the iPad while we tried them.

While we were trying our mince pies Mrs Hoyland came to say hello. We decided to see if she liked mince pies as well. Some children took her a piece to find out then took a picture to show us her answer. Do you think she liked it?

We’re really glad Mr Elf brought us some mince pies. I wonder if they’ll be any more surprises next week before he heads back to the North Pole to get ready for the big day!

What have we been learning? 

  • to share objects so it is fair. 
  • that sometimes you get some objects left over. 
  • to count objects. 
  • to count in two and threes with support. 
  • to try new foods that we might not be sure about. 
  • to predict what something might taste like from looking at it. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • count out other objects during meal times, e.g. How many chicken nuggets do you have?
  • share out objects at home to make it fair, e.g. Does everyone have a sweet? If there are 6 sweets and 3 people, how many do you get each? 
  • try new foods. If you try and special Christmas foods let us know on a Wow moment.
