Environment Week 2017

Every year in school we have an Environment Week. 2017 was no different. In Onyx class we had a couple of visitors in our classroom. First Michael Recycle came to visit and then Litterbug Doug. Litterbug Doug left a total mess which we had to sort out. It turned out that he was just trying to trick us and teach us about recycling. We learnt how to sort out rubbish and make sure it all went in the correct bins.

We didn’t stop there. A couple of weeks ago Jayden had asked if we could make paper in Onyx class. We gave him a couple of books to see if he could find out to do it and in Environment Week we gave it a go. It took a couple of days to do everything but worked out really well. Can you remember how we made paper? 

We watched the film Wall-E to find out more about how to keep our planet safe and why it was so important. It made us think about plants and how important they were. We talked more about this when we went to tidy our allotment which was looking a mess.

We talked about the weeds as we dug them up and started to talk about the roots and the leaves. It surprised Miss Parker how few children knew about the different parts of the plants so look out soon for some learning on plants. The good news is we knew more about how to grow plants so hopefully the sunflowers which we planted will be growing really tall soon. Keep your fingers crossed! How tall do you think they’ll grow? 

We also had a go at making a model of Wall-E. What do you think?

We had to be able to talk about the shape of the recycled materials that we were using and the properties of the shapes. It was hard to get the round bottles to balance on the neck because they had round faces not flat. We solved the problems and made Wall-E stick. Can you see any other shapes- 2D or 3D- on Wall-E?

  • What makes a nice environment. 
  • What we can make from rubbish to make it even better. 
  • To sort materials and recycle them. 
  • That a film can teach us important things about the environment. 
  • Why plants are so important to our planet. 
  • To build robots like Wall-E using a variety of different materials. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Recycle materials at home using the blue bin and blue box. Ask your child to help you sort the rubbish. 
  • Encourage children to turn the lights and other electrical equipment off as they leave rooms to save energy. Talk about why this is important. 
  • Buy a plant and let your child look after it at home by watering it regularly.

Our Fabulous Floor Book

You might have seen our Floor Book in the classroom or have heard your children talking about it. There have also been a few photos on this blog of some of the pages from our Floor Book.

We talk about what we want to learn on a Monday morning and then again on a Friday afternoon.

We start thinking what we want to learn in a  Friday session. We are able to talk about the learning from the week previously and then decide where we want to take it next. By Monday we’ve been able to think about it some more and really focus in on what we want to learn. Miss Parker helps us think of some questions that we can answer and use as the focus for our learning that week. Our floor book time can happen at any time though. If we start having an interesting conversation it will go in our floor book to record our thoughts and learning.

Sometimes someone will have said something during the week which gives us an idea. This is how we started thinking and learning about Camouflage when Lacey made a comment about her camouflaged maths book.

Sometimes someone will have said something a few weeks ago and that leads our learning. This is how we knew we were going to be learning about Ramadan when we talked about when Eid was.

Sometimes we think of a totally new idea about something that we find interesting. This is like when we learnt about Stickers.

Sometimes we read a story and it give us another idea. This is like when we read the story of The Hueys and the New Jumper and it triggered the idea of costumes in Aissata’s mind.

Sometimes someone brings something to school and this starts us thinking about something new. This happened when Miss Parker brought the Tadpoles to school.

Sometimes there is a themed week in school and we have to think about the theme that our year group has been given. We try and make it as interesting as possible, like when we learnt about Chocolate for Fair-trade Week and Wall-E for Environment Week.

Sometimes our learning is linked to current events, such as EURO 2016 when we did lots of learning about football and the different countries the teams came from.

Who knows what we’ll learn abut next! It will be up to the children though…

We love it when our parents and carers look at our floor books with us and we can talk about what we have been learning. Its a really good way of finding out what your child has been learning and doing when they come home and they tell you ‘nothing’!

We love it even more when our parents and carers make comments about our floor book and link it to our learning at home.

Making Our Own Paper

Do you remember when we told you about the paper we’d made? We made it during Environment Week after reading a Charlie and Lola book called Look After Your Planet. Some of the children decided they wanted to try and make paper themselves by recycling old paper. You can read more about Environment Week by clicking here.

We had such a good time finding out how to make our own paper and it generated lots of language and conversation.

What have we been learning? 

  • To follow instructions. 
  • To talk about what we see and feel happening. 
  • To observe the changes to materials. 
  • To recycle paper. 

How can you continue the learning at home?

  • Look for the materials you can recycle in your home and sort them into the correct recycling bins. 
  • Find lots of different papers and talk about the different types. Which types of paper are good for what? For example, would you use writing paper instead of toilet paper? Why not? 
  • Have a look at these instructions and try to make your own paper at home. As you’ll see in the Learning Story, we didn’t have a window screen to squeeze the water out, we used a piece of thin fabric instead.

Environment Week 2016

Every year in school we have an Environment Week. This year has been no different except this year we were having so much fun learning about our environment and how to make sure we look after our planet we had an Environment Fortnight.

We started off by learning what is our environment and why we want a nice environment not a horrible one.

We read books to help us understand about the environment. Can you believe Litterbug Doug even came to our classroom!?!?! He made such a mess which we had to sort out. It turned out to all be a big trick though to help us realise how much we like our classroom being tidy and neat.

We had lots of activities in our classroom where we got to turn old things into new and recycle them. Can you tell what our faces and robots are made from? 

We also made a huge robot outside with Miss Hulme as a shared Foundation Stage project. Isn’t it amazing? We made these projects with materials from the local Scrapstore in Sheffield.

While we were reading a Charlie and Lola story about saving the planet we had another idea. We decided we wanted to make paper! Miss Parker found some instructions and we gave it go. Miss Deighton is busy making it into a Learning Story so when its finished we’ll make sure you can get to see it and find out how paper making turned out.

We also decided that we wanted to use the film Wall-E to find out more about saving the environment and planet. You can see all of our learning here in the Floor Book.

After our outdoor robot and watching Wall-E,  we were inspired to make some robots of our own in the classroom. You can see these on our individual displays in the classroom.

And we’re not finished yet…… Michael and his friends started making a Wall-E in the workshop and are currently waiting for the paper mache to dry. We’ll have to see how it turns out after the Spring Bank Break.

Environment Week 2015

The last week of Summer 1 half term was Environment Week at our school. We asked the children again what they wanted to learn and as they’d been learning about Superheroes just before they decided they’d like to find out if there were any environmental superheroes. You can see here what they said on our planning sheet…..

Miss Parker found out there were some environmental superheroes so lots of our learning came from these stories.

You wouldn’t believe the mess that Litterbug Doug made of our classroom. There was rubbish thrown around EVERYWHERE! We had a busy afternoon picking it all up and sorting it into the recycling. Then it turned out he was kidding us when he turned into the litter police. He just wanted us to realise how horrible the mess was!

We also thought of lots of ways to change rubbish into useful items that we could use again. For some items this took quite a bit of thinking but we did it.  You can see one of them below- the bird feeder. That then made us think of other ways we could improve our Outdoor Area.

We also thought of some other items we would like to make our new Outdoor area even better at the new school.  Hopefully Miss Parker can put them on her shopping list.

At the end of the week  we wrote some environmental promises to show we were able to think what we would do to help save the world.
