NSPCC Big Board Game Day

We invited our parents and carers to school on Friday for Big Board Game Day in aid of the NSPCC. You can find out more about the great work that they do for children here.

We love playing board games because they are such a fun way to help us get better at Maths and counting. All the counting on a board game going backwards and forwards and counting the dice makes us much better at understanding number order, number lines and the concepts of more and less. The extra bonus is we’re having so much fun we don’t even know we’re doing Maths.

We all made our very own board game which we got to take home at the end of the day. Everyone had to order the numbers 1-20 themselves and then decide which messages to put on their game. Every single game in the class is different. Then we had the tricky job of cutting out the dice and folding it to make a cube.

Some children made a different board game with Mrs Brown at Parent Workshop on Thursday. One child brought his to school and very kindly let his friends keep it in the Maths Area. The children had a great time playing the game following the rules themselves and reading the cards which told them what to do.

As well as being great for making us great Mathematicians, board games are really good for helping us take turns and think of others as there are winners and losers.

We loved having our parents and carers come to help us in school and are really looking forward to playing our games again and again. Thanks for coming and for the donations that you made for the NSPCC.

Parents/ Carers- Don’t forget to let us know how your child has been getting on with their game on a Wow moment. You can send us an email of you all playing it on the class email. Let us know about any other board games you have and play at home. I heard one child talk about playing Monopoly already!

A Visit to Build A Bear Workshop Visit

We had a wonderful time last week when we visited Build a Bear Workshop at Meadowhall. We had to walk to the bus stop and catch the number 18 bus. We saw lots of interesting things out of the window on the way.

Once we got to Meadowhall Bus Interchange then we had to walk to find Build a Bear Workshop. We had to go across roads, go up steps, go over bridges, go down escalators and walk past all the shops. It was a great opportunity to use some of the position words we’ve been learning in Maths this week and last. It also gave us a good opportunity to practise our reading and work out what it said on the floor. Can you read it to a grown up now? 

Corey also managed to spot a volcano! Can you see it? This was good because Mateo had been asking when we were going on our Volcano Hunt.

We made it to Build a Bear Workshop 🙂

Once we got to Build a Bear Workshop we had the serious business to attend to and a bear to choose! We had three bears to choose from… can you remember which one you wanted? 

Everyone helped to fill our bear with fluff by pressing the pedal with our foot. We worked together with our friend.

Then we had to make a wish to put in our bear and also blow lots of kisses with fill our new friend with love. Then they were tied at the back so nothing fell back out.

After that we had to choose a name for our bear; we choose Onyx Dog when we talked about it. The last thing we had to do was get Onyx Dog some clothes so she can come to all our houses and school. While the grown ups had a look for some clothes for us to choose from we all had a hug with Onyx Dog and said hello for the first time.

Then we were ready to go back to school so we had to go and find the Bus Interchange again. We found the right bus stop using the letters and numbers and caught the bus back to school. Everyone was very sensible when the bus we should have been catching didn’t run and we had to wait for the next bus.

Everyone was very excited on the way back because it was a double decker bus and Miss Parker let us sit upstairs. We wondered if we would fit under the bridge but thankfully we did!

The excitement wasn’t over then though. When we got back to school there were lots and lots of fire engines outside school! Thankfully the firefighters were only practising in the old school building and there was no real fire. It meant we got to have a really good look at them as we walked past.

Well done Onyx Class! You were superstars all morning and made it a wonderful visit. I’m sure Onyx Dog is looking forward to coming to all your houses for a visit soon. Also a HUGE thank you to all the parents who came with us, we couldn’t go on our visits without you!

A Proud Teacher

I  was a very proud teacher on Tuesday this week. While we were at Manor Top Library on Monday afternoon a member of the public came to tell me about how polite and kind the children in Onyx class were being. She was there with her son and some of the children were reading him stories.

Then on Tuesday an email arrived in school. Miss French forwarded it to me and it said,

I have just been to the library with my 9 month old son. A class of children from your school were there. They were delightful! A small group of them shared their stories with my son, they were so kind and very polite. I think that they acted as a credit to your school!

WELL DONE Onyx class! You are all superstars and we are all very proud of you 🙂

Making Love Monster Happy

When it was Valentine’s Day we read some stories about the Love Monster. The children loved the story and it led to some amazing child- initiated learning as the children decided to try and cheer him up. Miss Deighton collected all the pictures we took and the things we said to make a whole class Learning Story. You can read it below…..

What have we been learning? 

  • To be kind friends. 
  • To organise and hold a party for the Love Monster. 
  • To follow a recipe ourselves and bake cakes. 
  • To solve problems such as ‘Are there enough buns for everyone?

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Make cakes and buns together following recipes. 
  • Think how to be a kind friend for other people you know out of school. Could you draw them a picture or write them a letter? 
  • Allow your child to help you solve problems at home such as ‘Are there enough plates for everyone?’ at dinnertime.
