Planting Tomatoes

Do you remember in Environment Week when we went to look at our allotment? Miss Parker decided we needed to learn about plants because lots of us got confused when looking at the roots, leaves and stems on the weeds and weren’t sure what to call them. We decided we would plant some seeds so we could watch them grow and talk about what we could see.

We were lucky in school to receive some tomato seeds from the National Schools Partnership.

We got busy planting making sure we had enough soil for the seeds and that we covered them up. Garnet class came to make sure everyone in Reception had one.

And then we had to wait…….

We are looking very carefully to see if we can see the stem and the leaves starting to grow. Can you see them? Why can’t you see the roots?

We’ll continue to watch them grow and talk about what we can see happening. How long do you think it will be before we see a tomato?

Environment Week 2017

Every year in school we have an Environment Week. 2017 was no different. In Onyx class we had a couple of visitors in our classroom. First Michael Recycle came to visit and then Litterbug Doug. Litterbug Doug left a total mess which we had to sort out. It turned out that he was just trying to trick us and teach us about recycling. We learnt how to sort out rubbish and make sure it all went in the correct bins.

We didn’t stop there. A couple of weeks ago Jayden had asked if we could make paper in Onyx class. We gave him a couple of books to see if he could find out to do it and in Environment Week we gave it a go. It took a couple of days to do everything but worked out really well. Can you remember how we made paper? 

We watched the film Wall-E to find out more about how to keep our planet safe and why it was so important. It made us think about plants and how important they were. We talked more about this when we went to tidy our allotment which was looking a mess.

We talked about the weeds as we dug them up and started to talk about the roots and the leaves. It surprised Miss Parker how few children knew about the different parts of the plants so look out soon for some learning on plants. The good news is we knew more about how to grow plants so hopefully the sunflowers which we planted will be growing really tall soon. Keep your fingers crossed! How tall do you think they’ll grow? 

We also had a go at making a model of Wall-E. What do you think?

We had to be able to talk about the shape of the recycled materials that we were using and the properties of the shapes. It was hard to get the round bottles to balance on the neck because they had round faces not flat. We solved the problems and made Wall-E stick. Can you see any other shapes- 2D or 3D- on Wall-E?

What have we been learning? 

  • Why we need to take care of our environment. 
  • What makes a nice environment. 
  • What we can make from rubbish to make it even better. 
  • To sort materials and recycle them. 
  • That a film can teach us important things about the environment. 
  • Why plants are so important to our planet. 
  • To build robots like Wall-E using a variety of different materials. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Recycle materials at home using the blue bin and blue box. Ask your child to help you sort the rubbish. 
  • Encourage children to turn the lights and other electrical equipment off as they leave rooms to save energy. Talk about why this is important. 
  • Buy a plant and let your child look after it at home by watering it regularly.

Celebrating Mother’s Day

On Monday we invited all our Mums and carers to school to say thank you for looking after us. We all met in the Main Hall with the rest of Foundation Stage and Key Stage One.

We sang some songs to our Mums and carers to say how special we thought they were and how much we loved them. In Foundation Stage we sang a song called Skidamarink. Can you remember the words? We sang a song with everyone else as well called My Mum’s One in a Million.

When we’d finished singing it was time for us to give our gifts to our Mums and carers. When we talked about Mother’s Day in class lots of the children said that their mummies liked flowers so we decided to plant them some seeds. All that they needed to do was add water and watch what happens now. What do you think will happen?

Pumpkin Madness!

We had lots fun this week exploring pumpkins in our classroom. We started talking about pumpkins when we talked about Halloween.

“I were drawing a pumpkin, a monster.”- Elijah

“My Dad’s going to get a pumpkin. Its going to be small, not that big of a giant monster”- Kiefer

“You scoop the top off, then scoop the face, then put the candle in.”- Taela-Rose

“Its really heavy because you can’t really hold it. It might drop out of your hands.”- Mia

We put some pumpkins in our class to explore and investigate.

We looked carefully at the pumpkins inside and outside. We had to tell each other and the grown up what we could see, smell, feel, taste and hearimage

We also tasted some pumpkin soup because most of us had never tried pumpkin before. Some of us thought it tasted nice but some people weren’t so sure! Can you tell who liked it from looking at our faces? Can you remember what it tasted like to tell your grown ups at home? imageWe also learn how the pumpkin is a plant and how it is a fruit. We knew that if we planted the seeds we might get a pumpkin next year. We planted a few to give ourselves the best chance. We’ll have to take care of them by watering them regularly and put them in the BioDome over the winter. Keep your fingers crossed the seeds grow. imageCan you see our amazing writing as well? We had to listen carefully and write the sounds we heard to write the word pumpkin.

What have we been learning? 

  • To describe the pumpkin using our senses to generate as many interesting words as possible. 
  • To taste new foods even if we weren’t sure about it to begin with. 
  • To feel different textures and think about how to describe them. 
  • That pumpkins have a life cycle and the seeds can turn back into a pumpkin. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Look for seeds in other foods- such as apples, pears, tomotoes etc. 
  • Grown some seeds in your garden such as wild flowers. 
  • Try different and interesting foods at home. 
  • Try and write some words at home using the sounds that you can hear- if your child hears the sound they might still need help knowing what that sound looks like as a letter.

Environment Week 2016

Every year in school we have an Environment Week. This year has been no different except this year we were having so much fun learning about our environment and how to make sure we look after our planet we had an Environment Fortnight.

We started off by learning what is our environment and why we want a nice environment not a horrible one.

We read books to help us understand about the environment. Can you believe Litterbug Doug even came to our classroom!?!?! He made such a mess which we had to sort out. It turned out to all be a big trick though to help us realise how much we like our classroom being tidy and neat.

We had lots of activities in our classroom where we got to turn old things into new and recycle them. Can you tell what our faces and robots are made from? 

We also made a huge robot outside with Miss Hulme as a shared Foundation Stage project. Isn’t it amazing? We made these projects with materials from the local Scrapstore in Sheffield.

While we were reading a Charlie and Lola story about saving the planet we had another idea. We decided we wanted to make paper! Miss Parker found some instructions and we gave it go. Miss Deighton is busy making it into a Learning Story so when its finished we’ll make sure you can get to see it and find out how paper making turned out.

After our outdoor robot and watching Wall-E,  we were inspired to make some robots of our own in the classroom. You can see these on our individual displays in the classroom.

And we’re not finished yet…… Michael and his friends started making a Wall-E in the workshop and are currently waiting for the paper mache to dry. We’ll have to see how it turns out after the Spring Bank Break.
