Careers Week

Last week in school was Careers Week. We had lots of special visitors to our classroom over the week. Can you remember who came?

First we had a visit from the PCSOs (Police). They came to have a play in the classroom and see what we do in Foundation Stage Two. It was fun to be able to play with all the toys in Onyx classroom together. Then we talked to them and they told us all about being in the Police and how you get to be in the Police. Some of us want to be in the Police when we are older.

Then Miss Parker’s mum came to visit us. We are used to seeing her in the School Library but not in our classroom. She came to tell us all about when she was a Librarian at the University. Did you know librarians have to go to Library School? They also have to read a LOT of books. If you love books maybe you could be a Librarian one day.

Finally Miah’s mum came to visit us and tell us about her job in a Care Home. She has to work very hard and told us all about the different jobs she has to do to help keep the old people happy and safe. She came to see us in her special uniform so we could see it.

A huge thank you to everyone who came to talk to us about their job. What would you like to do when you grow up? Maybe you could draw a picture and bring it to show Miss Parker in class.

A Visit from the Ambulance

We had a special visitor on the Monday of Safety Week. Don from the Ambulance service came to see everyone in FS and KS1. First of all he talked to us in the Hall. We found out about his job and how he keeps people safe. Then we got to see his special uniform and some children got to try it on.

After that we went outside to see the ambulance. Some of us were a bit worried about going in the ambulance because we’d never been in one before but everyone had a turn. We thought of some questions to ask Don like, ‘How does the ambulance know where to go?’ and ‘Why is there a snake on the ambulance badge?’ Can you remember what Don told us?

image

We also had a good look around the outside of the ambulance. Don put the lights on and the siren. It was really loud. Can you remember why is has to be really loud?

It was great having Don in school and we hope he can come again sometime.

Thank you Don for coming to see us!

The Day we went to Build a Bear

This week was very exciting as we went on our first school trip. We caught the bus and went to Build a Bear Workshop at Meadowhall. This was all part of the learning we’ve been doing about Anti-Bullying Week.

Dalton was able to talk all about it….. “We came in Build a Bear and sit on the floor and we build a bear with fluff and then Elisha put clothes on it and after that we had a picture. After that we had a look at lights and after that eat dinner”

Here are the pictures of how we got to Meadowhall. First we had to walk to the bus stop remembering what we’ve learnt about road safety when we were near the busy roads. We wore our tabards so we were bright and easy to see.

Then we could see Build a Bear Workshop! Everyone was very excited.

We went into Build a Bear Workshop and Ryan helped us to make our bear. We had to choose which type of bear we wanted and which clothes she was going to wear. We had to work as a team and vote for our favourites. We understood that we got to decide as a whole class so it might not be our first choice which was picked.

We even got to vote for our bear’s name. The winner was Millie Ethel.

Here we all are with our new friend. Can you spot her?

After we’d got our we went to look at some of the Christmas lights and we found the Lego shop as well. It made us wonder what we could make from Lego back at school.

After that we even had time for a picnic at Meadowhall with our special school sandwiches before we headed back to school.

The children were very well behaved during the visit and got a certificate on Friday in Special Mentions Assembly for being Charming Citizens and excellent ambassadors for our school.

If you want to see photos of the whole story of The Day we went to Build a Bear look out for the book in our book corner or when Millie Ethel starts coming to your homes.

A big thank you to the parents/ carers who came with us. We wouldn’t be able to go on visits without your support.

If you would like to come with us on visits, please speak to us in school and we’ll let you know when we’re going and what you need to do.

What have we been learning?

  • To be part of a collective team effort to build a bear.
  • To know we have to share the bear altogether and be friends.
  • to stay safe when we’re out near the roads and in public places.
  • To look at and talk about the Christmas lights and everything else we saw on the day.

What can you do to continue the learning at home?

  • Go on visits with your child to different places in Sheffield. There are lots of places you can go for free such as The Winter Gardens, Weston Park Museum and Ecclesall Woods or Norfolk Park. Talk about how these places are the same and different to other places you have been.
  • Continue to remind your child about road safety when near roads and refer to when we go places with school. All the children we’re brilliant when we went as a class.
  • Look out for the bear coming to your home after Christmas for the weekend or a couple of nights!!!!

Going to the Library

We’ve started to visit the local library at Manor Top every other week.

 image

Everybody has to walk to the library looking after their partner. We have to remember everything we’ve learnt about road safety when we cross the busy roads on the Manor Top.

We also look out on the way to see what we can see. We often look in the chemist windows and the card shop to see what is popular at the moment. When we went to the library there were lots of Halloween goodies. We usually see a tram or two as well.

When we get to the Library we have to remember to use our quiet voices and to walk around the Library. We also have to remember to be really careful with the books and put them back where we find them.

image image image

We are allowed to choose our favourite books although sometimes Miss Parker asks us to find books about what we’ve been talking about in class. We know that the books can teach us more about the things we have been learning.

After we’ve had some time looking at the books were allowed to choose a book to take home. To do this we need a Library card which we keep at the Library. We have to use the special computer and tell it which book we are taking home.

If your child does not have a Library card please ask us in school and we’ll give you a form so you can get one. Or you can get one directly at the Library – just tell them your child is in Onyx class.

We know it’s nearly time to go home when we listen to a story. Often the Librarian reads the story to us. We get to listen to stories that we don’t have in school.

Can you see our parents in the background too? We love it when our mums, dads and grandparents come with us. We can take lots of extra adults with us when we go the Library so please speak to a member of staff in school if you’d like to come with us, we’ll put your name down.

Why do we go the Library? What are we learning?

  • We learn to enjoy looking at books on our own and with our friends.
  • We learn to read our favourite books and talk about the pictures.
  • We look for books linked to out learning in class and learn that books can have information in them.
  • We learn about the job of a Librarian and get to know real life librarians.
  • We learn about walking safely to the library
  • We talk about what we see on the way to the library.

How can you continue the learning at home?

  • Visit the library with your child and family (Remember your Library card is at the Library and you can still use it even without school)
  • Share books together and tell stories.
  • Talk to your child about the books they see at the Library and bring home to share with you.
