FS Graduation 2018

One of the best days in FS2 is when we have our FS Graduation to celebrate our time in Foundation Stage at Prince Edward before we move onto Key Stage One. We love it because all the children have a chance to reflect on their learning during the year and tell us what they enjoyed the most. Then we get to share that with all our families.

We sang some songs and then we all stood up to tell everyone what our favourite thing about Foundation Stage had been. We thought about our time with Miss Hulme in Nursery as well. We had to be very brave as there were over 100 adults there for us to talk to.

Mr Siezckarek and Mrs Ainsley came to hand out the certificates and special treats.

We were also given our special string which Miss Parker and Miss Deighton had been holding onto since our first day at school in September. It was exactly the same size as us so we can see how much we’ve grown during the school year. I wonder who has grown the most?!? Don’t forget to tell the teachers how much you’ve grown.

We then got to watch our Graduation Video which is a look back over the year at all the fun things we’ve been learning and experiencing. Everyone loved looking for themselves on the big screen.

A Singing Start- A Recap

Do you remember we told you about the music sessions were having with Martin? The children loved learning new songs and having fun with music.

The children in Nursery (FS1) also enjoyed sessions with Martin and there was the after school Shake, Rattle and Roll Music Club that we loved going to with our parents and families.

Miss Hulme has made a video all about the Singing Start sessions we’ve had in school. You can watch it by either looking at the Diamond Class blog post or going straight to the video here.

Thanks Miss Hulme. It was great watching back the fun we had and remembering when we learnt the songs. We are still singing them in class and learning some new ones.

Fabulous Fireworks

When it was Bonfire Night we had lots of fun learning about fireworks. There were lots of activities to do in our classroom to really get us thinking about what the fireworks looked like and sounded like. We even had a go at moving our bodies like the fireworks.

Once we’d done all the different activities we turned our ideas into poems on the computer. Miss Parker found a programme which meant the words moved and made sounds! We had to sound out to spell the words and think carefully which letters made those sounds.

What have we been learning? 

  • To think about Bonfire Night using all of our senses. 
  • To think about how we can move like fireworks. 
  • To make pictures and models of fireworks looking carefully what we want them to look like. 
  • To sound out to spell new words and find the letters to make the sounds. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Talk about different sounds and what makes the sounds. You can look on the Phonics Play website on the Phase 1  Sound Starters. Look in your homework book for the password. 
  • Try and sound out to spell some other simple words. Do you know what the letters look like for each sound? 
  • Think about the different times of year we have fireworks. Which celebrations often have fireworks?

Environment Week 2016

Every year in school we have an Environment Week. This year has been no different except this year we were having so much fun learning about our environment and how to make sure we look after our planet we had an Environment Fortnight.

We started off by learning what is our environment and why we want a nice environment not a horrible one.

We read books to help us understand about the environment. Can you believe Litterbug Doug even came to our classroom!?!?! He made such a mess which we had to sort out. It turned out to all be a big trick though to help us realise how much we like our classroom being tidy and neat.

We had lots of activities in our classroom where we got to turn old things into new and recycle them. Can you tell what our faces and robots are made from? 

We also made a huge robot outside with Miss Hulme as a shared Foundation Stage project. Isn’t it amazing? We made these projects with materials from the local Scrapstore in Sheffield.

While we were reading a Charlie and Lola story about saving the planet we had another idea. We decided we wanted to make paper! Miss Parker found some instructions and we gave it go. Miss Deighton is busy making it into a Learning Story so when its finished we’ll make sure you can get to see it and find out how paper making turned out.

We also decided that we wanted to use the film Wall-E to find out more about saving the environment and planet. You can see all of our learning here in the Floor Book.

After our outdoor robot and watching Wall-E,  we were inspired to make some robots of our own in the classroom. You can see these on our individual displays in the classroom.

And we’re not finished yet…… Michael and his friends started making a Wall-E in the workshop and are currently waiting for the paper mache to dry. We’ll have to see how it turns out after the Spring Bank Break.

What have we been learning? 

  • Why we need to take care of our environment. 
  • What makes a nice environment. 
  • What we can make from rubbish to make it even better. 
  • To sort materials and recycle them. 
  • That a film can teach us important things about the environment. 
  • Why plants are so important to our planet. 
  • To build robots using a variety of different materials. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Recycle materials at home using the blue bin and blue box. Ask your child to help you sort the rubbish. 
  • Encourage children to turn the lights and other electrical equipment off as they leave rooms to save energy. Talk about why this is important. 
  • Buy a plant and let your child look after it at home by watering it regularly.
