Global Citizenship Week 2019- TASC

Following on from our Environment Week it was Global Citizenship Week in school. We wanted to continue our learning about Wall-e and what was good about our environment. However, we also needed to think about the things that we wanted compared to the things that need.

At first we all knew what we wanted but it was hard to think about what we might really need. We went on a walk around school to look for the different things we needed and wanted. Children commented on these as we walked round. We were starting to understand that although we wanted and liked toys and sweets we did not need them. We took lots of photos of the things we found and when we got back to the classroom sorted them out.

We decided that the things we needed kept us safe and alive. The things that we wanted might keep us happier but we didn’t need them.

To make us think about this a little bit more we returned to our thinking about Wall-e and when all the humans left Planet Earth. We thought about what we would take to a new planet with us if we had to leave Planet Earth.

We used the TASC wheel to work in groups and create something to show what we would take with us. Can you remember what we created?

A rainbow- because we need sun and rain on our new planet and when you get sunshine and rain you get a rainbow!

A garden- because we need plants to survive. They help us breathe good air and make food for us.

A tree- because the tree takes the bad things out the air and puts good air back.

A map-to show our new planet and what we would take with us.

An exercise bike- because we need to do lots of exercise to keep us fit and healthy (We talked about the humans in Wall-e who had got lazy and fat)

  • Talk about things at home that you need and want.

Buns Galore

Onyx class are lucky enough to be able to use the Bun Making Station as well during Learning Time. This is when we open up both classrooms and children get to choose where they do their learning. We love being able to follow the recipe ourselves to make the buns. The children are learning so much about Maths when they are making buns among lots of other things. They just see they are having fun though. This is when we believe the best learning takes place.

The recipe is taken from Anna Ephgrave’s books about learning in Foundation Stage.

Remember to remind the children how important it is to wash your hands first. You can’t bake a bun at school until your hands are washed!

We have introduced a Bun Making Station in Garnet Class. The children were given a recipe and were shown how to read it. Then they were encouraged to make buns independently.

What does balance mean? What does it look like?

Can you remember the ingredients you need?

We needed to place an egg on one side of the scales then measure out flour, sugar and butter. We needed to make sure each ingredient balanced with the egg, once we had all the ingredients in the bowl a grown up placed the mixture in a special cooker.

Christmas Celebrations Part 2- Our Party!

We had a wonderful day today when it was our party with Garnet class. Some children brought party clothes and got dressed up but everyone had a special party hat which we made ourselves.

When our elf appeared in the classroom this morning he asked us if we knew of any party games we could play. Lots of us said Pass the Parcel so it only seemed right that we played it at our party. Everyone got a turn but there were only 2 winners overall- one from each class. Tori Jae was particularly kind when she said well done to the winner in our class even though she must have been disappointed not to win herself.

Then it was time for some food. The teachers had asked our families to bring in some food for our party. We had to have some healthy foods alongside the crisps and a bun. Everyone tried some of the carrots, cucumber and there was also lots of fruit for us to eat.

We all had a wonderful time and we want to say a big thank you to all the parents/ carers who sent in food for our party. We loved it!

Healthy Living Week 2018

Before October Half Term we all took part in the whole school Healthy Living Week. We learnt about lots of different ways to keep ourselves safe and healthy.

First Mrs Murch came to talk to us about PANTS and our new friend Pantosaurus. It is important that we learn the special PANTS rules so we know how to keep ourselves safe.

There was a special rule to remember for each of the letters in PANTS.We had to remember Privates are private.

After that we had a doctor come to visit us and tell us all about staying healthy but also what happens if we need to go to the doctors.

We all had such a good time we decided we wanted a Doctors’ Surgery in our classroom and asked the teachers to turn our role play into a Doctors. We have loved pretending to be the doctors and the patients.

 

Another day we had a special PE session with Erol. It was hard work as we tried all the activities and kept our bodies fit and healthy.

We were very lucky because we were able to borrow some special bikes from Taylor Shaw. They were called Smoothie Bikes because when you pedalled them you made the blender turn. We got to use them a couple of times. First, when we made pumpkin soup with the pumpkins we’d been growing and, second, when we made smoothies with fruit and yoghurt.

Which was your favourite? Can you say why? 

We did some other different food tasting as well to try new and healthy foods.

Some children weren’t to sure to begin with about trying new foods but they surprised themselves when they did try them.

We also had a very different type of PE session than the one with Errol. In this one we did some Yoga and learnt to keep our bodies steady and still. It took a lot of concentration but we got really good at it and wanted to practise for the rest of the day.

We also read a book called UNPLUGGED which taught us about the importance of spending time outside and not always being inside on the computer- even if its our favourite thing to do! We learnt that being safe and healthy online means it is good to be away from the computer.

Healthy Living Week

The week before half term was Healthy Living Week for the whole school. When we were talking about being healthy we decided that we needed to know more about which foods are healthy and which aren’t.

We found a funny book at fruit called Kitchen Disco by Clare Foges . After that we knew we wanted to try some different fruits. Can you think which one was our favourite? Which one is your favourite? 

Some of the fruit was a little bit sour! It made us pull some funny faces!

We had to sound out to think how to spell all the different fruit names. Can you read them back? 

We talked about different foods and if they were healthy or not. We also talked about why they were not healthy, for example they have too much sugar or fat.

Our parents were invited to a special workshop with us. If was wonderful to see so many parents and carers attend- thank you for coming! We had to work with them to teach them what we knew about healthy foods.

Everyone got a special Booktime book pack with their very own copy of Kitchen Disco to keep forever 🙂 We hope you’ve been reading it already.

We had some special visitors come to school to talk to us about staying healthy as well. The School Nurses came to talk to us about healthy eating and looking after our teeth.

Running for Sport Relief

On Friday 18th March it was Sport Relief. We had already raised some money by holding a Fair-trade Bake Sale for the teachers with our Chocolatey Easter Nest Buns. You can find out more about this on our Fair-trade blog post if you click here.

We weren’t finished there though. Everyone in school ran for a whole mile and we were no different. We waited until our special time then headed outside. A mile is a long way when you only have little legs but everyone kept on running even when their legs got tired. Some of our parents and carers came to cheer us on and run with it. It was great to see them there and definitely gave us a boost.

Everyone did an amazing job and helped school raise lots of money for us to send to Sport Relief. Well done everyone!

PE Fun!

We started to do our PE sessions before the October half term. Nearly everyone brought their PE kit and everyone did a great job of getting changed themselves. Miss Parker and Miss Deighton only had to help with a couple of items of clothing.

When we were ready we had to walk out of the classroom down to the hall.

When we get to the hall we have to take our shoes off and that means we’re ready to listen and do PE. You can see why its so important everything has a name written in it when the shoes all look so similar!

Everyone had a fabulous time in PE. We get to run and show that we can go really fast and also that we can control out bodies and move slowly too.

In this game we had to listen very carefully to the whistle and remember what each whistle meant. If it blew once we just had to stop, if it blew twice we had to jump up and down and if it blew three times we had to sit down. It was hard to remember, especially at the same time as moving.

We talked about what happened to our bodies when we were doing the exercise. We noticed that our hearts were beating harder and faster in our chests and it got harder to breathe. When we stopped running they went back to normal. We know that in PE we are making our bodies stronger.

What are we learning? 

  • We are learning the independent skills of getting dressed and undressed. 
  • We are learning about the effects out exercise on our bodies. 
  • We are learning to listen and follow instructions. 
  • We are learning to control our bodies in big movements. 

What can you do to continue the learning at home? 

  • Encourage your children to be active- go to the park to run if there is nowhere safe near your house. 
  • Let your child dress and undress themselves.They all do it themselves at school. Even if it takes a little longer for them to do it themselves thats the only way they’ll get quicker. 
  • Talk to your child about what happens to their body if they’ve been running or walking for a long time. Encourage them to feel their chest and talk about whats happened to their breathing.
