Pancake Day 2017

We all love pancakes and loved that we got to make some of our own. We had to follow the instructions and mix the batter ourselves. We had to be very careful and remember what we had learnt in Safety Week about staying safe in the kitchen.

image

Some children remembered what they had learnt when we made pancakes and used it to write their own lists of ingredients later in the week. Leighanna sounded out to write her list.

Mateo drew pictures to write his list and then Jakoby labelled them to finish it when they were making pancakes in the Mud Kitchen.

We used the toppings that we liked to do some maths. We used the cubes to make towers and see which was the most popular before using Purple Mash to create a pictogram. It which easy to see which two toppings were the favourite and we were able to say which one was more and which was the most popular.

We read Mr Wolf’s Pancakes to find out what happened when he tried to make pancakes. Can you remember what happened in the story?

Chinese New Year Celebrations

Last week we saw on the calendar it was Chinese New Year and decided that we wanted to find out more about it.

We saw on the picture and on the front of the Chinese New Year book in our classroom there was dragon. We went to look at the Y6 dragon on the staircase in school. It made us decide that we wanted to make our own. We watched a video of a dragon dance and thought we could do a dragon dance of our own. We talked about what we saw.

There was another discussion about Chinese Food. Lots of the children said they’ve not tried it before so we decided that is what we should do.

We also thought what else we wanted to know about Chinses New Year and wrote some questions. Some of us wrote it by ourselves, some of us wrote shared sentences with teacher help.

During the week we did lots of learning about Chinese New Year. We watched some videos to find out more. You can watch them here.  There is one about preparing for Chinese New Year, one about celebrating Chinese New Year and one with the Chinese New Year Story.

We enjoyed having our own races outside and seeing which animal came first, second and third when we ran.

When our dragon was finished we did what we said we wanted to and took it to the Hall to do some dragon dancing. Some of us made the dragon dance and some of us played the instruments for the music.

One of our favourite things we did during the week was we tried Chinese Food. Miss Parker said we had to cook it ourselves so we went to the oven and the microwave to cook it before we could eat it.

You can see more about what we thought about our food in the floor book. You can also see we found out the answers to our questions.  We also loved trying the fortune cookies.

You can see the questions we wrote and the answers we found out here…

We have loved learning about Chinese New Year!

What have we been learning?

  • about how different people celebrate.
  • some of the ways that Chinese people celebrate Chinese New Year.
  • to think of questions about what we could find out.
  • to find out the answers to our questions.
  • to order numbers and use ordinal numbers such as first, second and third.
  • to taste new foods and talk about how it tasted.
  • to move to music and create our own.

How can you continue the learning at home?

  • Watch the videos again and see if you can find out anything new.
  • Have some races in the park and see who the winner is.
  • Think of some other things that you’d like to find out and look in books to find the answer.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

On Friday 30th September the whole school took part in the Macmillan Coffee Morning. We had a busy week baking Gingerbread Men and we decided that we would send these to the Coffee Morning for the mums and dads to eat instead of us.

We talked about why we were doing the baking and why we had to sell the Gingerbread Men instead of eating them ourselves.

“Its for the nurses”, said Jayden.

“Its for charity so the poorly people can feel better”, said Corey.

We all paid for a cake so got to eat these at snack time.

Everyone agreed they were delicious. We hope our families had a fantastic time at the Coffee Morning. Look out in school to see how much was raised overall. Last count was £200 and there was more to come!!!

Making Love Monster Happy

When it was Valentine’s Day we read some stories about the Love Monster. The children loved the story and it led to some amazing child- initiated learning as the children decided to try and cheer him up. Miss Deighton collected all the pictures we took and the things we said to make a whole class Learning Story. You can read it below…..

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Everyone was happy and the Love Monster seemed to be cheered up to 🙂

You can also see our Learning Story and pictures displayed in our new Library. FS1 Diamond class (Nursery) helped us by making some Love Monsters.

What have we been learning?

  • To be kind friends.
  • To organise and hold a party for the Love Monster.
  • To follow a recipe ourselves and bake cakes.
  • To solve problems such as ‘Are there enough buns for everyone?

How can you continue the learning at home?

  • Make cakes and buns together following recipes.
  • Think how to be a kind friend for other people you know out of school. Could you draw them a picture or write them a letter?
  • Allow your child to help you solve problems at home such as ‘Are there enough plates for everyone?’ at dinnertime.
