Yum, Yum, Christmas Dinner

It was our Christmas Dinner today. Nearly everybody in the class tried a school dinner which was great to see. We have to try hard to use our knife and fork even when it gets a bit tricky.

We even had some special visitors come and join us for Christmas Dinner. The PCSOs came to catch up with us and enjoy their dinner as well. You might even spot Miss Parker’s mum as well who came to share the occasion with us.

We all agreed that our dinner was delicious and now those of us who celebrate Christmas are really looking forward to Christmas dinner at our homes over Christmas.

What we have been learning? 

  • To use a knife and fork.
  • To try new foods. 
  • To talk to members of our community. 

How can you continue the learning at home? 

  • Encourage your child to use their knife and fork when they eat at home. 
  • Encourage your child to try a range of foods at home and to eat school dinners each day.

Our Christmas Nativity 2017

We did our Christmas Nativity for our grown ups today and we did such an amazing job. Everybody remembered their lines and their acting. We all did a fabulous job of singing all the songs. Well done everyone!

Our Christmas Workshop

We had a wonderful time on Friday morning when our parents and carers came in for Christmas Workshop. It was great to see so many of you there joining in with the children as they made their Christmas crafts. Some of the children from Garnet class came to say hi as well and we got to go and have a look around Garnet class.

Can you remember the different activities you got to try?

  • Making Reindeer Food
  • Making paper chains
  • Colouring a Christmas Picture
  • Making a Christmas Tree ornament

Anti-Bullying Week 2017

A couple of weeks ago in school it was Anti-Bullying Week. We did lots of talking about what a bully is and what to do if we think we see someone who is a bully. We also talked lots about how to be a good friend and make sure we are not a bully.

At the end of the week we collected all our ideas and made a book. You can read it here…

We acted out our ideas and took photos to make our book. We only pretended to be bullies though. After we made our book we put it in our reading corner so we could keep on reading it. We really enjoyed reading our book. We hope you like it.

Parents/carers- you can read the book again at home with your child and make sure they understand what a bully is and what a bully does. It is important for your child to understand that for these behaviours to be bullying it happens frequently and is targeted at the same child or children.

A Visit from the Dogs Trust

On Tuesday we had a visit from the Dogs Trust. We talked all about dogs and if anyone in Onyx Class had a pet dog.

Then we talked about the foods that dogs like to eat and also the foods that make dogs poorly so we know how to help take care of our dogs at home. Can you remember what a dog should not eat?

We talked about staying safe around dogs and what to do if a dog you don’t know comes up to you. Can you remember what to do?

We all got a certificate to say that we had listened well and participated in the session. Well done everyone 🙂

Phonics in Reception FS2

We have started daily Phonics sessions with the children.

We have started teaching the children the sounds that the letters make so they are able to recognise them both in books and around every environment they go in. We will also expect them to start using them in their own writing.

This video will help you know the exact sounds which each letter makes. It is important that these pure sounds are used.

We use the Jolly Phonics actions to support the children while they are learning the sounds each letter makes. We sing the song and do the action to make it easier for the children to remember them.

 

When we teach the letters and their sounds we teach them in an order which makes it easier to make words. First the children will learn s, a, t, p, i, n. Then they learn m, d, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss. These are all the letters and sounds they will learn in Phase 2.

Although it is important for the children to know the sounds the letters make it is also just as important for the children to be able to blend sounds together to make words. This means when you say to them the sounds they are able to make them into the word. At first the children will do this when they just hear the sounds. Children are expected to to be able to do this when they start Reception (FS2). As they get more confident with the letters they are expected to be able to read the letters themselves and blend them into words.

Examples of this:

c– a– t  is cat                  s–a–t  is sat

p–i–n  is pin                    g–o–t  is got

We also teach the children to read alien words which they are able to blend but make no sense.

Examples of these are:

s–e–c is sec                    h–i–b  is hib

d– u–p  is dup               l– e– c  is lec

Once the children are able to read words with Phase 2 sounds and also sound out to spell them we move onto Phase 3 letters and sounds, which include vowel digraphs (two letters, one sound). Children should be secure in reading and writing with Phase 3 sounds at the end of Reception (FS2)

What can you do to help the learning at home?

  • Complete the Phonics homework each week. This will tell you which letters and sounds the children have been learning that week. 
  • Play the games on www.phonicsplay.co.uk which will help your child with their phonics skills. Good games to practise blending are Buried Treasure, Obb and Bob and Dragon’s Den. 
  • Look for letters everywhere and see if your child knows which sound they make. If you see words with the sounds they have learnt ask your child to help you read it. You can do this when you’re reading school reading books but also sometimes in other books you read together. Your child won’t be able to read the whole book but they can begin to help you.

Balance Bikes

We were very lucky this week when Rob from British Cycling came back to visit us in school. He came in before the half term break to see us and teach us some skills on the balance bikes. The balance bikes are really important for helping us to develop lots of physical skills.

These are the pictures from Rob’s first visit.

We start each session by practising some skills, often holding onto the paper ‘handlebars’. Then we get to try out our new skills on the bike.

Rob said he was really impressed by the progress we are making and he could tell that we’d been practising in between our sessions. We go on the Muga every week to practise our skills.

Rob was so impressed he gave everyone a certificate to say well done 🙂
